McCartney 'pretty terrified' doing duet with Streisand

RTÉ News22-05-2025
Paul McCartney has admitted that he felt "pretty terrified" while recording a duet with Barbra Streisand.
The Beatles star, 82, recorded a version of his song, My Valentine, with Streisand for her new album, The Secret Of Life: Partners, Volume Two.
Speaking about the session, he said in a website post: "(It was) nerve-wracking. Nail-biting! I did the session with her in LA and I was pretty terrified.
"I think the session was about three hours, you know, a normal kind of session, and it was produced by my friend Peter Asher.
"But it started off with a big 40-piece orchestra on the Sony lot, which is one of the old Hollywood film studios; it's very impressive. And we were on 'The Barbra Streisand Scoring Stage', so no pressure there!
"I thought, 'Well, this will be easy because it's my song, it's My Valentine. What can go wrong?' But what I'd forgotten was that they'd arranged it so that it had to go in Barbra's key and then in my key.
"So, to get from Barbra's key into mine was kind of difficult, and I had to launch in not knowing what key I was in. Mine was lower, hers was higher. It wasn't easy at all!"
He added: "I thought if Barbra is going to do my song, I've got to encourage that. And she was great.
"I didn't realise how rounded she is, creatively. They were filming the session and as soon as we went in, she said, 'Who put that camera there? That shouldn't be there, bring it over here. And what about those lights?' I thought, 'Wow, you're directing it!'
"But then I suddenly remembered she's directed three big movies. She's a smart cookie."
Ahead of the song's release last Friday, the Funny Girl star, 83, said in an Instagram post: "What a joy it was to record 'My Valentine' with @paulmccartney. To share time with him in the studio was truly special!"
The album, set for release on June 27, acts as a sequel to her Grammy-nominated record Partners from 2014.
My Valentine, which has been covered by Canadian singer Michael Buble, featured on Paul McCartney's 2012 album Kisses On The Bottom.

Roy Keane 'put a marker down' after fellow cruise guests harassed female DJ

Roy Keane has told how he needed to '"lay down a marker" after a group of passengers began harassing a female DJ while on a holiday cruise this summer. Keane was appearing on the first episode of the new season of Stick to Football, and when asked by Jill Scott how he enjoyed his break, Keane revealed that he was almost called into action while on a cruise with his wife Theresa. "I've had a great summer. No tournaments, bit of a break. I went on a cruise and really enjoyed that. "I did (get annoyed on) the first night. I put a marker down on the first night to a few people. They weren't coming up to me but they were just being rude to other people. "They were just being rude to other people, rude to the woman playing the music and getting aggro with her and I stepped in. Listen lads calm down, this is a nice boat remember. "But these lads, about four of them who were about the same age as me, maybe a bit older, they were being really rude to this woman DJ and manhandling her. "And I just went over to them and went, 'Lads just calm down,' so I sat down and four of them came across ready to… 'But no I didn't have them, it didn't kick off but it was pretty close." When Gary Neville remarked that it sounded like Keane was ready for the new season, the Corkman replied in jest saying: "It's like a pre-season game, Charity Shield, studs down the back of somebody. "They were still annoying the rest of the week but I kept my distance. "A few nights later I saw them having a few words with this other guy. "I went over to support him a little bit, but it wasn't as bad as I'm kind of making out." Away from the cruise, Keane looked as though he had a wonderful summer. Last week, he shared a series of photos on his Instagram account of him spending his 54th birthday on holidays surrounded by his children and grandchildren. The Manchester United legend is gearing up for another season as a pundit with Sky Sports, but his family life is also about to get much busier as his daughter, Leah, announced this week that she was expecting a baby with her fiancée, England international and Southampton ace Taylor Harwood Bellis. Keane's third grandchild, a baby boy, was born in April. To celebrate his arrival, Keane posted an adorable snap of the pair on Instagram with the caption "My new grandson, big baby," in reference to one of his most memorable punditry moments.

Later, he took to his social media to reveal his surprising link to the annual event. The dad-of-three shared a photo of himself looking very dapper in a tuxedo as he walked the carpet of the Rose Of Tralee festival 2016. He revealed that nine years ago he was an escort for two of that year's roses; Donegal and Scotland. Following the event in 2016, he spoke to the Irish Examiner, where he reflected on the experience. He said: "I'm absolutely exhausted, physically and emotionally, but in a good way. "Over the week, we all bonded so well. We've had an absolute ball. 2025 Rose of Tralee hopefuls reveal their stories ahead of the contest "I've never laughed as much in life. I've made 130 new friends — I'd highly recommend it." Earlier this month, Carl opened up to his wife on their podcast about a mistake he had previously never owned up to. HOST CONFESSION Carl and Aisling recently launched their very own podcast called How Are Ya Lovie?. On the most recent episode, the dad-of-three wanted to get something off his chest that he had been holding in for years. Speaking to Aisling, he said: "Can I tell you something now that I've never told you before? "It was during Covid when Davy was born. So you were all washing your bloody shopping and everything and wiping it all down." Carl then revealed that he "opened the wrong pack" of wipes and instead of using baby wipes on his son, he used an antibacterial one when changing his nappy. Aisling remarked: "No wonder why his skin is so sensitive." Carl explained how stressed it made him saying: "No and in fairness I remember the next day his a** was red raw and I was so afraid to tell you. "I was like she's gonna kick my a**. She's going to absolutely kill me'. "And every day you'd call my name, I was like 'She's found out, she's figured it out. I don't know how but she's figured it out'."

Baker makes 3D cake of Oasis' debut album ahead of Croke Park shows

A Dublin baker has superbly recreated the Definitely Maybe Oasis cover by making the iconic album into a cake. If you've somehow managed to miss the news over the last week, Oasis are finally bringing their reunion tour to Dublin on Saturday and Sunday, with Oasis mania taking over the capital and country at large. With bucket hats being sold at a massive rate and people who weren't so lucky taking to every social media avenue to grab tickets, one woman has taken the fandom to a brilliant new level: recreating the iconic cover from Oasis' debut Definitely Maybe out of cake. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Today FM 💛 (@todayfm) The chocolate biscuit cake recreates the album perfectly, including Liam lying on the ground while the rest of the lads watch TV and noodle on the guitar. The Perfectionist Confectionist Niamh Geraghty, who made the cake, revealed that it took more than a day of combined labour to get the cake together, explaining: 'It took [more than] 30 hours to create. The brief is 'Please, can you turn this album into a 3D cake?' [and] I did.' While 30 hours for something as intricate as an album cake may seem incredibly stressful and tedious, it was quite the contrary for Niamh, who told Today FM: 'I loved every minute of it.' Pic: Today FM/Instagram The album shot the band to superstardom in 1994, becoming the fastest selling debut album in UK history and featuring some of the band's best songs including Supersonic, Live Forever and Married With Children (one can only assume the fact that the gigs are in a stadium is the reason for it being left off the setlist, but still sorely missed). As for the info those who were lucky enough to get tickets will need, the official Oasis Instagram have confirmed that the gates to Croker will open at 5pm, with opening act Cast kicking off proceedings at 6pm. Richard Ashcroft will take to the stage at 7, before at 8.15pm Noel and Liam et al will bring the noise to over 82,000 people on Saturday and Sunday. As for how the weather is looking, Met Éireann have given good news to the 160,000 people who are mad fer it this weekend.
