Malaysia continues to strengthen role as global halal hub
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's participation in the Osaka World Expo 2025, highlighted by a visit to Sanda Shokuniku Kosha, a halal abattoir in Kita-ku, Kobe City, Hyogo, Japan, offers a valuable opportunity to gain insights into the best practices of Japan's halal meat industry.
Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu said the abattoir is the region's only halal-accredited facility and is renowned for producing halal Kobe beef.
'This visit offers us a valuable opportunity to gain deeper insights into the best practices of the Japanese halal meat industry, covering processing methods, hygiene standards, traceability systems, and the use of modern technology that complies with food safety requirements,' he said in a Facebook post today.
He also expressed his appreciation to the management of Sanda Shokuniku Kosha for their strong commitment to upholding international halal standards and enhancing the regional halal ecosystem.
He added that such strategic collaborations are vital in Malaysia's efforts to reinforce its position as a global halal hub.
In addition, Mohamad said that his ministry will continue to focus on empowering the ruminant industry this year, aligned with the Malaysia MADANI approach, which emphasises sustainability, prosperity, and creativity.
'We aim to increase local participation in this sector, leveraging modern technology and halal assurance as key foundations for success. Our goal is for Malaysians to be not only consumers but also leaders within the global halal value chain,' he said.

Govt under fire from opposition, allies over telco data handover demand
THE Malaysian government is facing mounting criticism over an alleged directive requiring all telecommunications companies (telcos) to hand over comprehensive mobile user data, including call records, internet usage, and GPS location history. MCA President Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong has voiced serious concern over the move, warning that it poses a significant threat to citizens' privacy and could lead to the misuse of personal information. He rejected the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission's (MCMC) claim that the data had been 'de-identified,' arguing that metadata, such as GPS coordinates, call logs, and IP addresses, could still be easily traced back to individuals, especially when cross-referenced with other digital sources. He believed MCMC is trying to downplay the issue by saying, :Don't worry, the data has been de-identified and contains no personal details that can identify individuals.' 'But I want to ask, de-identified, really? Don't try to fool us. If you're collecting data on who we call, when we call, how long we talk, our IP address, and our GPS coordinates, the exact latitude and longitude, time and day, anyone with access to this data can easily match it back to our identities. Especially now, with e-wallets, CCTV, Touch 'n Go, and banking records, it's incredibly easy to pinpoint someone's identity,' he said in a video posted to Facebook on Saturday. From the opposition, Pejuang raised similar concerns. Pejuang information chief, Muhammad Rafique Rashid Ali, criticised the move as unjustified and questioned the true motive behind collecting such intrusive data. 'What exactly does MCMC intend to do with this data? Their excuse is to promote local tourism? But what is the real motive?' he said. 'Not only is this a privacy issue, but there is also the risk of this data being misused or leaked to other parties,' Rafique added. 'MCMC should stop trying to cover up a huge scandal with a tiny sieve,' he said via Facebook on Sunday. Both Pejuang and MCA, despite being on opposing sides of the political spectrum, are united in calling for greater transparency and accountability from the government on this issue. Proton e.MAS 7 becomes Malaysia's fastest-selling EV, 3,632 units sold as at May 31
PETALING JAYA: As the Proton brand marks its first anniversary, Proton Holdings Bhd subsidiary Pro-Net reported that 7 continues to be the No. 1 electric vehicle (EV) in Malaysia, with 3,632 units sold as at May 31 – comprising 3,399 units locally and 233 exported. Achieving this milestone within just five months since deliveries began in January, the 7 has come Malaysia's fastest-selling EV. This achievement comes just one year after the launch of the Proton brand. Unveiled in June 12, 2024, the brand introduced its flagship model, the 7, on Dec 16, 2024, which has since emerged as a frontrunner in Malaysia's fast-evolving EV segment. Despite pricing pressures across the EV market, the 7 continues to perform strongly, signalling a clear reflection of the trust Malaysians place in the Proton brand and its commitment to quality. 'This strong show of support from Malaysians is incredibly encouraging. It validates our strategy, strengthens belief in the Proton brand, and reaffirms the value of investing in home-grown innovation,' said Pro-Net CEO Zhang Qiang.
