Jets' Joe Tippmann ‘excited' to be in battle for starting job after initial shock
That has become the reality for Tippmann, who enters Jets training camp in a battle for the starting center spot with the freshly signed Josh Myers.

Nonetheless, the 24-year-old out of Wisconsin said he's making the best of the situation.
'At first, I mean, it took me by surprise a little bit,' Tippmann said after Wednesday's first day of training camp in Florham Park. 'But Coach [Aaron Glenn] actually called me first, and he kind of let me know the situation beforehand. So after that, I was just excited.'

Tippmann started all 17 games for the Jets last season and played every offensive snap, but the team inked a one-year, $3.5 million deal in March with Myers, who started the past three seasons with the Packers.

Glenn provided little clarity on the battle after practice, repeatedly reiterating that there is an open competition 'at every position,' but Tippmann removed any doubt when he took the podium.
'Just being able to keep that in my mind, know that it's an open competition, and that I'm going to have to keep battling every day for that position,' Tippmann said.
Tippmann, a 2023 second-round pick, said he 'immediately' followed Myers on Instagram after learning the Jets had signed him because he wanted to begin building a rapport.

'Hit him up,' Tippmann said, 'and just kind of started that relationship with him.'
At 6-foot-6, 313 pounds, Tippmann earned a 73.4 grade from Pro Football Focus last year, ranking ninth among qualified NFL centers.
Myers notched a 55.7 grade, ranking 46th.

Besides the competition, Tippmann is focusing on getting reps with Justin Fields, who is a markedly different type of quarterback than those he's snapped to before.
'I've never really played with a quarterback that can play with his legs,' Tippmann said. 'Coming from Wisconsin, pocket passers, so finally getting to play with someone like that, it's great. It's super exciting.'
He added that Fields is 'calm,' 'level-headed' and a 'very relaxed guy,' and that he's found his new quarterback easy to communicate with as they learn each other's tendencies ahead of the season.

Myers, on the other hand, is plenty familiar with Fields — he played with the quarterback at Ohio State in 2019 and 2020.

The Packers selected Myers, 27, in the second round of the 2021 draft, and he spent time as the center for both Aaron Rodgers and Jordan Love in his stint with Green Bay.

'We brought Josh in, so now I have that competition each and every day,' Tippmann said. 'It's something that's only going to make me better, and pressure makes diamonds.'

Rams 2nd-year DB is shining in camp ahead of what could be a breakout season
Sean McVay had some seriously high praise for McCollough this week This time last year, Jaylen McCollough was doing his best to show the Los Angeles Rams coaching staff that he was deserving of a roster spot. With a strong performance in camp, he not only made the team, but he also earned playing time on defense as an undrafted rookie. Now entering his second season in the NFL, McCollough's stock is on the rise. The former Tennessee safety drew rave reviews from Rams coach Sean McVay after practice Monday thanks to his consistent impact on defense as a versatile chess piece. 'It's really the same thing that you saw him do a great job with last year. He's so valuable. He's so versatile,' McVay said. 'He can play safety or the dime linebacker. When we played Seattle last year, the first game, he was playing linebacker on early and normal down and distances and taking on guards when they're easily climbing to him uncovered.' McCollough, who's 6-foot and 202 pounds, can play a variety of roles for the Rams. And his impact is felt no matter where he lines up, whether it's in the slot, deep as a free safety or in the box as a linebacker. Last season, he played 10 snaps on the line of scrimmage, 156 in the box, 123 in the slot and 92 as a deep safety, according to Pro Football Focus. And that was as an undrafted rookie still trying to find his footing. Heading into Year 2, he's poised for an even bigger role as he continues to improve. 'What's cool is when I think about you guys ask me about different players, these are people you don't bet against,' McVay continued. 'They just show their value. They are grown men and they're mature beyond their years. That's exactly how 'Tank' McCullough came in last year. I think there are certain guys that just have a knack for being in the right place at the right time. He was doing that at Tennessee. It's not by mistake that he had the ball production that he did last year. He's made of the right stuff. I love what he's about. He's just continuing to get better and to really show his value to this football team.' McCollough played 30% of the snaps last season and still managed to tie for the team lead with four interceptions, one of which he returned 4 yards for a touchdown against the Packers. It's reasonable to think his playing time will increase this year, especially considering he didn't play more than 18 snaps in a game until Week 9 last season. With Kamren Curl, Kamren Kinchens and McCollough all in the mix, the Rams have one of the most intriguing safety groups in the league. It may not be the best in the NFL just yet, but they have the potential to make big strides this season, particularly with McCollough's versatility and playmaking ability. Given how frequently Chris Shula deploys three-safety packages and moves around his defensive backs, McCollough could be in for a breakout year. Hybrid safeties like him with position flexibility provide a ton of value in today's pass-heavy league and McCollough is the latest to fit that mold.

Azzi Fudd wore adorable custom Paige Bueckers shirt to support her girlfriend
Dallas Wings guard Paige Bueckers and her girlfriend, Azzi Fudd, hard-launched their relationship earlier this year, and now they've treated everyone to adorable things ― like custom shirts. In case you're unaware, Bueckers confirmed the pair were dating during WNBA All-Star weekend after years of speculation. There were murmurs about the former UConn Huskies teammates before then, but nothing anywhere close to official until Fudd sent fans into a frenzy in June with a "Paige Bueckers' Girlfriend" phone case she sneakily dropped in an Instagram story. Now, Fudd is continuing her somewhat quiet but intentionally noticeable support of her girlfriend by not only showing up to her WNBA games, but rocking some custom Bueckers-themed apparel. On Monday, Fudd was in attendance for a Liberty-Wings matchup wearing a lovely "I [heart] P.B." shirt with coordinating pants. How sweet is that? We can't wait to see more of Pazzi ― that's what the kids are calling them these days ― in the future.

Seahawks continue to give Christian Haynes opportunities to break into lineup
Seattle Seahawks sophomore blocker Christian Haynes is entrenched in a position battle at right guard with Anthony Bradford. The two interior offensive lineman are competing for a starting gig. It turns out that's not Haynes' lone opportunity to break into the Seahawks' starting lineup this season. In what arrived in surprising fashion, Haynes has also been receiving occasional reps at center. The experiment began at OTAs and mandatory minicamp, and has continued being displayed at training camp. Head coach Mike Macdonald recently claimed that Haynes is in the mix to be the team's starting center this year. It's worth noting Haynes has been the third-string center, working behind Olu Oluwatimi and Jalen Sundell. That indicates Haynes' possesses a far more realistic chance to win the right guard job. Nonetheless, Macdonald's staff is offering him multiple opportunities to break into the lineup. Haynes struggled as a rookie last season. The third-round selection lost last offseason's position battle to Bradford, but occasionally replaced him. Haynes totaled 164 snaps at right guard, earning a lackluster overall offensive grade of 48.5 from Pro Football Focus. The Seahawks are hoping to see Haynes take a developmental step forward this season. New offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak and offensive line coach John Benton are relying on him. The onus is on Haynes to maximize the opportunities he's receiving at training camp.
