Billy Joel cancels tour after diagnosis with brain disorder normal pressure hydrocephalus
Billy Joel has canceled all upcoming concerts after he was diagnosed with the brain disorder normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH), the singer announced on Friday.
The condition 'has been exacerbated by recent concert performances, leading to problems with hearing, vision and balance', according to a statement posted to the 76-year-old singer's official Instagram. 'Under his doctor's instructions, Billy is undergoing specific physical therapy and has been advised to refrain from performing during this recovery period. Billy is thankful for the excellent care he is receiving and is fully committed to prioritizing his health.'
The Piano Man singer added: 'I'm sincerely sorry to disappoint our audience and thank you for understanding.'
Normal pressure hydrocephalus is a condition where excess cerebrospinal fluid accumulates in the brain's ventricles, leading to difficulty walking, problems with thinking and reasoning and loss of bladder control. It primarily affects people in their 60s and 70s and is often misdiagnosed as Alzheimer's disease or Parkinson's disease, according to the Alzheimer's Association.
Joel's canceled dates include 17 stops in North America and England. The tour comes nearly two years after he wrapped a record-breaking residency at Madison Square Garden that began in January 2014. Joel played one show every month at the Manhattan venue for nine years – 150 in total, every one of them sold out.
Next month, the world premiere of Billy Joel: And So It Goes, a two-part documentary exploring the Long Island-bred musician's life and career, will kick off the Tribeca film festival in New York. The project, directed by Susan Lacy and Jessica Levin, contains footage of unreleased performances as well as archival photographs, 'intimate' home movies and exclusive interviews.
Joel's team added that the 23-time Grammy winner is 'thankful for the excellent care he is receiving and is fully committed to prioritizing his health. He is grateful for the support from fans during this time and looks forward to the day when he can once again take the stage'.

The beloved Aussie comedian, 64, who revealed she is battling Mantle Cell Lymphoma last week, took to Instagram to thank her family, friends and fans for the outpouring of support. Speaking in a video posted on Sunday, Magda said she had been 'overwhelmed' by the response to her announcement. 'I just wanted to say a massive thank you for all the love and support,' she said in the clip. 'It's just been so moving and, really, youse are the wind beneath my wings. 'It's pretty overwhelming, but I just feel so loved.' Last week, Magda shocked her followers when she revealed she was battling a rare and fast-moving blood cancer. She appeared on camera with a shaved head after beginning her treatment to fight the disease. 'Hello my lovelies. So, the head is shaved in anticipation of it all falling out in a couple of weeks because I have just been diagnosed with a very rare, very aggressive, very serious lymphoma,' she began. 'It is one of the nasty ones, unfortunately. But the good thing is I'm surrounded by beautiful friends and family and an incredible medical support team. It's known as the Nordic regimen based upon its clinical trial sites in Denmark and Norway. The actress explained she will be 'lying very low' due to her weak immune system. 'I won't sugar-coat it: it's rough. But I'm hopeful. I'm being lovingly cared for by friends and family, my medical team is brilliant, and I've never felt more held by the people around me,' she said. 'Please keep a distance though because I will be very immunocompromised. So I can't hug no more. 'Don't hug me, kiss me, or breathe anywhere near me! Wave enthusiastically from a safe distance and know I love you madly.' The Kath & Kim star said the cancer was discovered during a routine breast screening. 'This is an obscure cancer and was only discovered incidentally via a breast screen where they found my lymph nodes were up,' she explained. 'TBH, I've been feeling pretty rats**t for ages. So I asked for extra bloods and - voila! So the take away is - get tested and listen to your body! In April 2024 Mama June admitted she spent $30,000 of daughter Alana's money on 'life expenses' including manicures and household bills - while continuing to shut down criticism for not contributing to her college fund. Alana was particularly upset by the news regarding her finances, and she stated that she was considering legal action against her mother, who had attempted to talk her way out of the confrontation. Also affected by the argument was Shannon's husband, Justin Stroud, who stated that he was 'really hurt' by his wife failure to be truthful about her past actions. Elsewhere in the trailer, Lauryn "Pumpkin" Efird, 25, is heard declaring: 'We're getting a f*****g divorce!' as her tearful husband Josh looks on. After the matriarch refused to pay her youngest daughter's tuition, which she suggested would be a 'waste' of money, Pumpkin said Mama June was 'not supportive' and 'lost $500,000 to a bag of f***ing crack'. Their intervention quickly becomes a bitter showdown when Mama June denied the 'betrayal' overall and refused to hand over the money — for which the teenager previously said she will sue and take her mother to court. This comes after the matriarch told exclusively that she spent Alana's Dancing With The Stars: Juniors earnings on manicures and paying her own bills. The family was rocked by the death of Anna 'Chickadee' Cardwell at age 29 from cancer in December 2023. Chickadee passed away after battling adrenal carcinoma that progressed to stage 4. June took in Chickadee's eldest daughter Kaitlyn, 12, and was awarded full custody of her after a months-long court battle. June is currently married to Justin Stroud, whom she met in rehab in 2021 after battling an addiction to crack cocaine. Chickadee left behind her husband Eldridge Toney and two daughters - Kylee, nine, by her ex-husband Michael Cardwell, and Kaitlyn by a previous relationship. Before she died, Chickadee agreed that her mother would take Kaitlyn in - but this year June had to wage a legal battle over the issue against Michael, who wanted custody of both Kaitlyn and his biological daughter Kylee. June was determined to retain guardianship of Kaitlyn, saying: 'Anna wanted Kaitlyn to stay with her biological family, and I'm going to fight to my last breath till I don't have any more fight in me to make sure that is how it works.'
