PKR polls: Wanita PKR prepping likely candidates for GE16 and Sabah polls, says Fadhlina
JOHOR BARU: Wanita PKR has begun laying the groundwork for the 16th General Election, including grooming potential candidates, says its chief Fadhlina Sidek.
Fadhlina, who is also Education Minister, said the women's wing has arranged several training programmes, especially in Sabah, which is expected to hold its state election this year.
"The training is not just about developing talent, but also preparing candidates with the right ideals, communication skills, data training, the ability to win over voters, and the confidence to stand for election.
"We are also securing financial support through initiatives such as the 30WReps Fund, which aims to assist the party's women who will be contesting in the Sabah and general elections," she told a press conference during the PKR Wanita Congress at the Danga Bay Convention Centre here on Friday (May 23).
She added that the 30WReps Fund, with a starting amount of RM50,000, allows the party's women candidates to focus on their campaigns without worrying about funding.
"The initiative addresses one of the biggest challenges faced by election candidates, especially women, which is securing funds," she said.
Fadhlina also said Johor is seen as one of the best places to identify talent among women.
'We won seven parliamentary seats in Johor with the help of our partners in Pakatan Harapan.
"So, Johor is not just a location (but) one of our strongest power bases, especially (in the context) of general election victories," she said.
Fadhlina had been asked if the party planned to field more women candidates in the next general election.

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA: Analysts have proposed two key strategies for PAS to win over non-Malay voters, namely fielding non-Muslim candidates in safe seats and highlighting the party's achievements in its administration of Kelantan, Terengganu, Kedah, and Perlis – also known as the SG4 states. Azmi Hassan of Akademi Nusantara said PAS must move away from political rhetoric if it hoped to shift perceptions among non-Malay voters. Advertisement 'So far, PAS has yet to demonstrate that it is a better option than DAP or PKR, as there's little to be proud of in its administration of the SG4 states. 'PAS must tone down its extreme rhetoric and focus on showcasing its ability to govern by making the SG4 a better model than the states governed by Pakatan Harapan (PH) or Barisan Nasional. That's what it needs to do now,' he told FMT. PAS vice-president Amar Nik Abdullah previously said that the party was targeting non-Malay voters who were disillusioned with the government ahead of the 16th general election, acknowledging however PAS's struggle to win over that segment. He said PAS faced the challenge of finding more convincing ways to gain the trust of non-Malay voters while preserving its clean image and integrity to maintain its support among the youth. Awang Azman Pawi of Universiti Malaya said dissatisfaction among non-Malays towards PH could give PAS an opening, but only if the Islamic party could address deeper, structural issues. 'These include concerns about religious freedom and racial harmony, and rejecting theocratic narratives. Without such changes, discontent with PH will only be temporary, as non-Malay voters still find it difficult to accept Perikatan Nasional (PN). 'PAS also needs to overcome the longstanding distrust, including the fact that it once branded non-Muslims as infidels (kafir) – something that still lingers in the memory of many non-Malays.' PAS must be sincere in fielding non-Muslim candidates Awang Azman added that dissatisfaction with PH did not automatically mean that the non-Malays were ready to support PAS. 'PAS must be bold and sincere in placing non-Muslim candidates in winnable seats – just as Umno does with MIC and MCA – as a genuine sign of cooperation with non-Muslims. This shouldn't just be rhetoric or a symbolic gesture,' he said. Rusdi Omar of Universiti Utara Malaysia said that to attract non-Malay support, PAS must move away from an overemphasis on religious, racial, and royal sentiments, and adopt a more moderate approach. We've lost confidence in Wong Chen, says Subang PKR No 2
Yesterday, Subang MP Wong Chen expressed fear the government led by PKR president Anwar Ibrahim would have little to show in terms of reforms at the end of its term. PETALING JAYA : A Subang PKR leader has expressed a loss of confidence in the constituency's MP, Wong Chen, and suggested he step down from the elected post if the party's struggle no longer aligns with his. Subang PKR deputy chief Wan Hasifi Amin said that Wong's statement yesterday, where he lamented the lack of reforms carried out by the unity government, was unnecessary, especially coming from a PKR MP. Wan Hasifi also claimed that the three-term MP did not attend a single divisional meeting since being elected a PKR central leadership council member in 2022, a post he lost in the party's recent elections. 'And, until now, no Subang Pakatan Harapan committee has been formed, when it could serve as a platform for cooperation among the PH components in the Subang parliamentary constituency. 'As the grassroots machinery, we in Subang PKR want to state our disappointment and loss of confidence in Wong Chen,' he said in a statement. Wan Hasifi called for Wong to be dropped as a candidate in the next general election, saying Subang PKR wanted an MP who is not distant from the grassroots and heeds the voice of the people. 'If Wong Chen feels that (the party's) struggle is no longer aligned with his, then the clear and principled move he should make is to step down (as MP) respectfully.' Yesterday, Wong announced that he was taking a two-week break from work for a family holiday, during which he will ponder his future in politics. The former PKR central leadership council member said he could not shake a deep worry that the government led by PKR president Anwar Ibrahim would have little to show in terms of institutional reforms at the end of its parliamentary term. Wong was aligned with former PKR deputy president Rafizi Ramli during the party's elections last month. He lost his seat on the PKR central leadership council, while Rafizi was defeated by Nurul Izzah Anwar and subsequently offered his resignation from the Cabinet. Wong was first elected an MP in 2013, when he won the contest for the Kelana Jaya seat for PKR with a 28,827-vote majority. He was then fielded to contest the Subang seat in 2018, winning by a convincing 92,353 votes before recording a bigger victory in the 2022 general election with a 115,074-vote majority.
