Rajasthan CM orders repair of damaged govt buildings

Jaipur, Jul 30 (PTI) Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma on Wednesday directed all departments to prepare district-wise reports of damaged government buildings and ensure their prompt repair, an official statement said.
Chairing a high-level meeting at his residence, he said a committee will also be set up to assess the construction quality of government buildings, schools and anganwadi centres built in the last six years.
On July 25, a portion of a government school building collapsed in Jhalawar district, killing seven children and injuring 28.
In a similar incident on July 28, a six-year-old student was killed and a teacher injured when a pillar of the main gate of a government school building collapsed in Jaisalmer district.
Sharma instructed all departments to prepare district-wise reports of damaged or dilapidated buildings and ensure repair work is carried out immediately. He directed officials to carry out timely repairs using disaster management funds and submit proposals without delay, according to the statement.
Special focus must be given to buildings located in rural areas, he said.
He said a special state-level committee will also be constituted to assess the construction quality of government buildings, schools, and anganwadi centres built in the last six years.
'In case of any unfortunate incident leading to loss of life, individual responsibility will be determined," the CM said.
Anganwadi centres operating in unsafe buildings have already been shifted to safer locations and a mandatory inspection of such facilities will be carried out. The state government has earmarked Rs 50 crore in the 2025-�26 budget for repair of 5,000 anganwadi buildings, Sharma said.
He directed officials from departments of public works, education, health, and women and child development to inspect and submit detailed reports on all public buildings, especially schools and hospitals.

Judicial remand of 12 accused extended till August 13
Vijayawada: A special Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) court here on Friday extended the judicial remand of 12 liquor scam case accused, including YSRCP MP P V Midhun Reddy, till August 13. The Special Investigation Team (SIT) officials produced the accused before the court upon completion of their previous remand period. Nine accused were brought from the district jail in Vijayawada, while two were brought from Guntur jail. Midhun Reddy was brought to the court from Rajahmundry jail. Midhun Reddy, the Lok Sabha member from Rajampet, was arrested in the case on July 19. The court had sent him to judicial custody till August 1. The custody of 11 accused was also extended till August 1 during the previous hearing on July 22. The accused include Kasireddy Rajasekhar Reddy, former IT adviser to former chief minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy; K Dhanunjaya Reddy, secretary in the Chief Minister's Office; Krishna Mohan Reddy, officer on special duty (OSD) to then chief minister; Bharati Cements director Balaji Govindappa, former MLA Chevireddy Bhaskar Reddy, Rajashekar Reddy's personal assistant Dilip Kumar, B Chanikya, Venkatesh Naidu, and Sajjala Sridhar Reddy. After the court extended their custody, they were sent back to jail. The scam had occurred during the YSRCP rule between 2019 and 2024. Investigators reportedly uncovered a kickback network involving nearly Rs 3,500 crore siphoned off over five years.

Botcha points out that state's law and order maintenance has gone haywire
Visakhapatnam: YSRCP MLC Botcha Satyanarayana pointed out that anarchy prevails in the state with the coalition's inefficient governance. Speaking to the media in Visakhapatnam on Friday, he said that the state suffers from lack of law and order and the ruling party resorts to making derogatory remarks against women. 'The crime rate has gone up in the state after the coalition government came to power. Rapes and assaults against women and minors have increased in an alarming manner. Also, ganja peddlers are getting the support of the government,' the MLC criticised. During YS Jagan Mohan Reddy's Nellore, Botcha Satyanarayana recalled, police imposed unwarranted restrictions and dug up roads to prevent people from gathering. 'It clearly indicates that the government is scared of YS Jagan Mohan Reddy and there is growing intolerance among people,' he stated. The language being used by TDP leaders against women leaders including RK Roja and ZP chairperson U Haritha shows their audacity and respect for women, the MLC mentioned. Vizag has been gravely exploited by Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and his coterie by allotting prime lands at low prices. 'Lands worth Rs 1,500 crore are being given on long lease to Lulu Group. Former Chief Minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy promoted IT in Vizag while the coalition is merely exploiting the resources,' he said. Students did not get fee reimbursement, farmers are not getting MSP and there is no crop insurance or input subsidy, while women are cheated by false promises, the MLC added.

CPM demands withdrawal of Rs 12,771 cr power tariff burden
Vijayawada: CPM state committee strongly condemned the proposed additional burden of Rs 12,771 crore in electricity charges under the guise of 'True-Up' adjustments. The party is demanding the immediate withdrawal of this proposal and has called on the public to make the 'Praja Vedika' protests on August 5 a success. In a statement here on Friday, CPM state secretary V Srinivasa Rao criticised the move, noting that while the government claims it is not increasing electricity tariffs, the distribution companies have submitted proposals to the Electricity Regulatory Commission to levy a True-Up charge of Rs 12,771 crore for the period between 2019-20 and 2023-24. Srinivasa Rao said that this could not have happened without the state government's knowledge and urged the government to intervene immediately to halt the proposed hike. He pointed out that over the past 36 months consumers have already paid Rs 3,000 crore in True-Up charges for the 2014-19 period. After the new coalition government came to power, an additional burden of Rs 15,485 crore was imposed in adjustment charges for 2022-23 and 2023-24. Furthermore, consumers have been charged an extra 40 paise per unit every month for the current financial year (2024-25), collecting another Rs 2,787 crore. He also mentioned that smart meters would lead to further financial burdens. Srinivasa Rao accused the coalition government of breaking its promise to reduce electricity charges, a pledge made during the election. He pointed out that despite recent public announcements about a reduction of Rs 449 crore through a 'True-Down' adjustment, the distribution companies have simultaneously proposed a massive increase. The Electricity Regulatory Commission issued a notification on July 30 seeking public feedback on the proposal. The CPM leader declared that the practice of collecting True-Up charges years after the initial tariffs were set is illegal. He alleged that the government and distribution companies are using this system to increase costs through illegal agreements and corruption with corporate companies, ultimately passing the burden onto consumers. The party has called on the public to participate in the protests organised by Praja Vedika on August 5 to oppose the electricity tariff hikes, demand the abolition of True-Up and fuel adjustment charges, and reject the implementation of smart meters.
