Adam Wharton makes gesture at Sky Sports reporter after overhearing transfer question
Crystal Palace star Adam Wharton made his future plans clear with Sky Sports in attendance at the Eagles training session on Wednesday. Even when preparing for their UEFA Conference League play-off against Frederkstad, they cannot escape transfer speculation and questions.
Even with just days remaining of the transfer window, the Eagles face the prospect of losing two key players. Eberechi Eze and Marc Guehi could still move to Tottenham and Liverpool as the month comes to a close after being two of the protagonists in helping Palace into European action.
There has also been speculation over figures such as Wharton and Jean-Phillipe Mateta as they continue to build their reputations after FA Cup glory. And, in the open portion of their session, Oliver Glasner's stars could not avoid the transfer talk in a very real way.
Sky Sports reporter Gary Cotterill was on the sidelines and soon had a studio anchor setting the scene. "This is prime Sky Sports News, prime Gary Cotterill," they said.
"He's within arms length of Eberechi Eze, and Adam Wharton, you can ask him about his future while he's there, and Jean-Phillipe Mateta."
Loud enough for nearby players to hear, Cotterrill returned: "I'm not going to ask Adam Wharton about his future, no."
Eze was the first to look up and cast an unimpressed gaze in the direction of the camera before Wharton offered his own response. The former Blackburn star, following an exchange of words with Mateta, turned to the camera before adjusting his STATSports Vest in a bid to try and reveal the Crystal Palace badge on his training kit.
But Eze and Guehi are perhaps unable to give as enthusiastic responses as their futures still require resolutions. Both are likely to feature on Thursday evening against Fredrikstad.
Tottenham and Palace have still not yet reached an agreement over a transfer fee for Eze. The sides have been in talks over a deal but have so far been unable to agree on a payment structure for a proposed £60million package.
Eze is said to be keen on the idea of moving across London but awaits a breakthrough. Oliver Glasner believes both players remain committed to his cause.
"Most of you will be surprised that they will start again tomorrow because of all the rumours," Glasner said in his press conference. "But they are committed here and they will play a crucial part."

Phil Parkinson hails Wrexham's ‘statement of intent' with Callum Doyle signing
The Red Dragons have been busy this summer as Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac's men rebuild for their first season back in English football's second tier since the 1981-82 campaign. Doyle, who joins in a deal the PA news agency understands to be worth £7.5million, is Wrexham's 10th permanent signing since promotion and follows last week's club-record £10m purchase of Nathan Broadhead from Ipswich. The 21-year-old has signed a contract until 2029, with City holding a buy-back option and inserting a 25 per cent sell-on clause. A fresh pour of bold. Callum Doyle joins the squad. 🔴⚪️ #WxmAFC — Wrexham AFC (@Wrexham_AFC) August 21, 2025 'Callum's a player we've obviously been looking at over the summer,' Wrexham boss Parkinson said. 'Always difficult deals to get because there's a player in demand. We've had to compete with some really good clubs to bring him here. 'He's only 21, he's got a lot of Championship experience, an England Under-21 international. I think he's a player of huge potential. 'This hasn't broken the transfer record. It's in line with other transfers we've made already this summer. Callum Doyle spent last season on loan at Norwich (Bradley Collyer/PA) 'But I think it is a statement of intent that we've won the signature over some established Championship clubs, who've been in the division and Premiership before recently, and obviously clubs in other European leagues.' Doyle came through the youth system at City, who have farmed the defender out on loans to Sunderland, Coventry, Leicester and most recently Norwich. The England Under-21 international already widespread Championship experience is in contention for Saturday's clash with Sheffield Wednesday. 'Obviously it's difficult to break through into Man City's team,' Parkinson said. 'I think Callum was at the stage in his career where he's ready to find a home, he'd had a lot of loan moves, and be part of something. Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson has had a busy summer in the transfer market (Cody Froggatt/PA) 'I've had a good chat with him over the last few days, and we were looking forward to getting him in with the boys. 'He's trained this morning with us and have another session and assess where he is fitness-wise because obviously he hasn't had loads of minutes, but he's here for the long term.' Wrexham may not stop there, though, and Parkinson says they are 'going to take stock' over a weekend they hope can mark the end their 43-year wait to win a match in the second tier. The Welsh side host the embattled Owls on Saturday afternoon having suffered a late 2-1 defeat in their opener at Southampton before falling to a 3-2 home loss to West Brom. Wednesday are having to balance off-field issues and Parkinson, who was manager of Bolton during some dark times, hopes they soon return to a sounder footing. 'You feel for the supporters of any club because football clubs are such a part of the community,' the Wrexham boss said. 'We know Sheffield (Wednesday), what pride they've got in that city, and the competition they have with United, et cetera. 'Everybody in football, we're all football people, understands that along the way that there are going to be clubs nearly every year who are in difficult situations, and it's important for the football community and world to support those clubs.'

Arsenal closing in on Eberechi Eze transfer as midfielder left out of Crystal Palace Conference League squad
Eberechi Eze 's £60million transfer from Crystal Palace to Arsenal could be confirmed as early as this weekend. Eze is set to become Arsenal 's seventh signing of the summer after they moved to hijack Tottenham's bid for the England international. It is believed the finishing touches on a deal to sign the 27-year-old, which catapults Arsenal's spending to beyond £250m, are all but completed. Eze's stunning move to the Emirates accelerated this week following a knee injury sustained by Kai Havertz. The Germany international came on as a second-half substitute in Arsenal's 1-0 win at Manchester United, and completed the game, but he did not participate in the club's open training session at the Emirates on Wednesday. It is unclear how long Havertz, who is still being assessed, will face on the sidelines. But the hastiness to swoop for Eze is evidence Arsenal did not want to take any chances as Mikel Arteta – backed by sporting director Andrea Berta – bids to lead the north Londoners to their first Premier League title in 22 years. Eze is now poised to follow striker Viktor Gyokeres (£55m), defender Cristhian Mosquera (£13m), midfielder Martin Zubimendi (£60m), goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga (£5m), midfielder Christian Norgaard (£10m) and forward Noni Madueke (£48.5m) in making the switch to the Emirates. Arteta will face the media at the club's training ground on Friday to preview his side's second match of the campaign, at home to Leeds on Saturday evening. Eze was left out of Palace's Conference League qualifier against Norwegian outfit Fredrikstad at Selhurst Park, which is the Eagles' first ever European tie.

Arsenal edging closer to completing £60million move for Eberechi Eze
It is believed the finishing touches on a deal to sign the 27-year-old, which catapults Arsenal's spending to beyond £250m, are all but completed. Palace boss Oliver Glasner revealed Eze, who was missing from his squad for their Conference League play-off at Selhurst Park, rang his manager on Thursday morning to say he could not play. Eze played in Palace's Community Shield victory and their Premier League opener at Chelsea (John Walton/PA) 'Honestly I expected that he will start today for us, but he called me this morning and said he doesn't feel well to play in the evening, and of course I have to accept it, and everything else you have to ask the chairman,' said Glasner, speaking to Channel 5 ahead of their meeting with Fredrikstad – the Eagles' first ever European tie. 'I have to accept it. If a player tells me he is not ready to play, then of course we had to (accept it). I called the player who starts instead, Justin Devenny, and that he is ready, because it's my responsibility to prepare the players to play for us in the best way. 'And so it was quite busy. You don't like to change your starting 11 on matchday, especially in this situation. It's the first time in European football for Crystal Palace, but again, we have to deal with it, and so this is what we do in the best way.'
