A mysterious ancient world which has been shielded from view out in the open for over 34 million years has recently been uncovered by scientists. It lies beneath a vast layer of ice in Antarctica, which has uncovered a raft of evidence.
Employing a combination of satellite imagery and ground-penetrating radar technology, experts have exposed evidence of prehistoric river systems that once meandered through what is now an ice-covered wilderness. Scientists have determined that the hidden expanse, situated beneath the surface in Wilkes Land of East Antarctica, covers an area exceeding 12,000 square miles.

Durham University's Stewart Jamieson, the lead researcher in this intriguing study, described the finding as akin to "uncovering a time capsule", commenting further: "The land underneath the East Antarctic ice sheet is less well-known than the surface of Mars."

The research team uncovered geological features indicating an ancient terrain dotted with significant ridges and deep-cut valleys, as reported in the Express.
They discovered three separate elevated areas stretching from 75 to 105 miles in length and up to 53 miles across, divided by extensive valleys plunging nearly 3,900ft and stretching up to 25 miles wide.
What sets this East Antarctic ice sheet apart from other glacial bodies is its classification as a "cold-based" glacier according to scientists, it remains frozen to its base, advancing at a sluggish rate and thereby inflicting little erosive impact on the terrain below.
Remarkably stationary, shifting less than 16 feet annually, this sheet has done an exceptional job at preserving the topography beneath.
Professor Jamieson elaborated on the significance of the discovery: "What we find is an ancient land surface that has not been eroded by the ice sheet, and instead it looks like it was created by rivers before the ice came along."

"It is remarkable that this landscape, hidden in plain sight for many years, can tell us so much about the early and long-term history of the East Antarctic ice sheet," Neil Ross, professor of environmental geophysics at Newcastle University and co-author of the study, acknowledged.
Around 180 million years in the past, Antarctica was integral to the supercontinent Gondwana, but its eventual breakup set Antarctica adrift towards its current polar setting, becoming distinct from South America and Australia in the process.

This shift instigated the creation of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current, a system that flows clockwise around Antarctica, which cut off the continent and contributed to significant coolin. This resulted in the extensive ice sheets that have become discoverable today.
Even in later warm periods, like the mid-Pliocene approximately three million years ago, the now-uncovered region stayed beneath ice.
Researchers are optimistic that these findings will shed light on how Antarctica may transform with looming climate change scenarios.

Under the direction of Robert Zemeckis, the original Back to the Future debuted in 1985, with its sequels arriving in 1989 and 1990 respectively. ‌ The second instalment follows schoolboy Marty (Michael J Fox) and quirky scientist Doc (Christopher Lloyd) as they once again board the DeLorean for a journey through time, desperately trying to restore 1985 and their lives to normality. ‌ According to Rotten Tomatoes, the plot unfolds as follows: "In this zany sequel, time-traveling duo Marty McFly and Dr. Emmett Brown return from saving Marty's future son from disaster, only to discover their own time transformed. "In this nightmarish version of Hill Valley, Marty's father has been murdered and Biff Tannen, Marty's nemesis, has profited. ‌ "After uncovering the secret to Biff's success - a sports almanac from the future - Marty and the Doc embark on a quest to repair the space-time continuum." Whilst the follow-up earned just a 64% fresh rating from critics, viewers awarded it a significantly higher 86% approval rating, reports the Express. This falls short of the original film's impressive 93% critics score and 95% audience approval. ‌ Fans have been effusive in their praise for the film, with one declaring: "Back to the Future (any of them) are certifiable masterpieces!" Another fan expressed their delight, writing: "One of my all-time favourite films, and it was so awesome seeing it in theatres again." A third admirer shared their thoughts, adding: "An awesome sequel, part of one of the greatest trilogies ever made." ‌ Critics have also shared their positive takes, with CBR's David Reddish noting: "Back to the Future Part II left the biggest mark on popular culture, sparking imagination and inspiring more adventure." He further observed: "Whatever its flaws or negativity it inspired from fans of the first movie, it remains the defining entry in the series." ‌ Hannah Rose from the same publication highlighted an often-overlooked aspect, writing: "One of the greatest and subtlest selling points of Back to the Future was its cuteness." She elaborated: "It might be odd, even trivial, to call a big-budget, epic sci-fi film cute, but this is an accurate description." David Jenkins from Little White Lies offered a succinct verdict, simplying putting: "Imperfect, but very lovable." ‌ While Ira Robbins of Entertainment Weekly described the experience as "another fantastic voyage in a thoroughly entertaining contraption". Richard Schickel of TIME Magazine also found much to admire, commenting: "Satirically acute, intricately structured and deftly paced, it is at heart stout, good and untainted by easy sentiment." However, not everyone was impressed, as highlighted by Variety's critique, which read: "Zemeckis' fascination with having characters interact at different ages of their lives hurts the film visually, and strains credibility past the breaking point, by forcing him to rely on some very cheesy makeup designs." Jonathan Rosenbaum from the Chicago Reader also had his reservations, stating: "By the end, you may feel that you've just sat through a feature-length commercial for both part one (which has to be seen to make this sequel comprehensible) and part three (a trailer for it literally ends part two)." 'Breakthrough' new drug could stop ageing and halt cell self-destruction

An 'extraordinary' new class of drugs are set to undergo human trials after researchers believe they could become the first medication to reverse the effects of ageing Scientists believe they've developed a drug that could halt human ageing and reverse the impacts of 'cell death', with trials due to kick off later this year. ‌ Cell death is a natural, and essential, process that takes various forms. One such form is necrosis, an unregulated type of cell death that can lead to premature cellular destruction. ‌ During necrosis, affected cells swell until they burst, spilling their contents into the surrounding area, potentially causing chronic inflammation, genetic instability, and in some instances, tumours. ‌ This process has been associated with numerous diseases, including Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, various cancers, and kidney disease. The world-renowned cancer journal, Oncogene, highlighted in May that a study into kidney disease could help researchers gain a better understanding of how necrosis operates and how to fight it, reports the Express. Dr Carina Kern, formerly a geneticist at University College London and now CEO of biotech firm LinkGevity, led the study. She believes a new category of drugs, dubbed 'anti-nectrotics', could be the first medication used to reverse the effects of ageing. ‌ Part of Dr Kern's motivation for her involvement in the project stems from her childhood experience of witnessing her grandmother's health rapidly decline due to an age-related illness. "At the time, I could not comprehend how I was so easily cured of nearly any injury, and I would be back to normal. But with her, the doctors just said 'you can't intervene-it's just ageing,'" she explained. Years later, after observing such deterioration, Dr Kern formulated the "Blueprint Theory" of ageing, which delves into the roots of ageing and identifies points for potential intervention to stave off illness. ‌ A key element identified in her research is necrosis, which Kern asserts is fundamentally a "loss of calcium-ion gradients." She elaborates: "Levels of calcium inside the cell are typically 10,000 to 100,000 times lower than outside. Calcium is a key signalling molecule, meaning it controls lots of different processes within your cell. "And so upon stress, you lose this regulation and then you're initiating multiple pathways in a heightened and really destructive manner within the cell." ‌ Although necrosis has been known for over a century and was further examined under microscopes in the 1970s, there hasn't been significant advancement in preventing its role in severe diseases. However, Dr Kern, alongside a team of renal experts, might be on the verge of a discovery targeting kidney disease that could also have implications for anti-ageing treatments. Dr Kern said: "It was thought it was just too complex a process to intervene in. What we've managed to identify for the first time is that you can block necrosis, but you have to block more than one molecular target... When we did that, we saw up to 90 per cent of suppression of necrosis." ‌ His colleague and co-author of the study, Dr Keith Siew, commented: "The by far the most in-demand organ, and the one you're most likely to die on a waiting list for. "Some people think dialysis just fixes the problem, but the mortality rate of dialysis is that every year you're on dialysis, you lose 10 per cent of survival." Having collaborated with NASA to explore how space travel impacts renal function, particularly when astronauts are exposed to cosmic radiation beyond Earth's magnetosphere, Dr Siew noted:. ‌ "Only 24 people have left the protection of Earth's magnetic field. You might feel fine on the way, but will you need dialysis on the way back?". He suggested that "Anti-necrotics could be a way to make those tissues and organs resilient enough to withstand that damage and pause cell death." Despite their groundbreaking work, both Kern and Siew maintain a cautious stance, describing themselves as "professional sceptics" regarding the potential success of the anti-necrotic drug, with clinical trials set to commence in 2025. Dr Siew emphasised the need for robust evidence: "Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence," he said. "Until that data is rock solid...a lot of people will view this skeptically and rightfully so."
