Odisha to expand e-bus network, launch Ama Bus service in five new cities

BHUBANESWAR: Going ahead with its plan of promoting green and sustainable public transport in urban areas, the state government will launch electric buses (e-buses) under Ama Bus service in five more cities and further expand the service in Berhampur city. It has initiated the procurement of 200 more e-buses for the purpose.
Officials in Capital Region Urban Transport (CRUT), that manages the Ama Bus service, said the e-buses will be introduced in Keonjhar, Baripada, Angul, Jharsuguda and Sambalpur, while the existing fleet of e-buses under Ama Bus service in Berhampur will be increased.
The e-bus service is available in the Capital region and Berhampur at present. 'Tender has been invited recently for the introduction of 200 more electric buses under Ama Bus service. The service will start in the identified cities once the procurement process is complete,' said CRUT managing director N Thirumala Naik.
CRUT has planned to purchase medium-sized electric buses for expansion of its e-bus service. The agency has decided to purchase 50 e-buses each for Berhampur and Sambalpur and 25 e-buses each for Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Angul and Jharsuguda.
The fresh procurement will increase CRUT's existing Ama Bus fleet from 560 to 760. The e-bus fleet will also go up from 180 to 380. With Berhampur already having 20 e-buses, the fresh procurement will take the number of e-bus fleet in the city to 70.
Officials said the bus operator to be finalised for procurement, operation and maintenance of these buses, will be engaged for at least a decade. Apart from the 200 e-buses, they will also be managing 400 e-buses soon under the PM-eBus Sewa scheme.
Under the scheme, the Housing and Urban Development (H&UD) department plans to run at least 100 e-buses each in Bhubaneswar, Cuttack and Rourkela and 50 in Sambalpur. They added that implementation of the proposal has been delayed owing to legal hurdles and is expected to be implemented soon after the matter is resolved. The Centre will procure and handover the e-buses to CRUT under the scheme.

Oswal Pumps IPO: Should You Subscribe? Most analysts have given 'subscribe for long-term' rating to the IPO. Oswal Pumps is one of India's fastest-growing names in solar-powered solutions, and reported a CAGR of 45.1% between FY22 and FY24. The company is expected to grow at a rate of 11% in the next five years, the analysts said. However, the analysts also mentioned some risks, including the company's dependent on its top-10 customers (who account for nearly 80% of revenue from operations), government funding changes or policy changes (as the significant portion of Oswal Pumps' revenue is derived from turnkey solar pumping systems under PM-KUSUM), and the concentration of all of its manufacturing facilities at one place (Karnal, Haryana). Giving a 'subscribe' rating, Aditya Birla Money in its IPO note said, 'Oswal Pumps Ltd (OSPL) is one of India's fastest-growing names in solar-powered solutions. The company has carved a niche as a fully integrated manufacturer of solar and grid-connected submersible pumps, monoblock pumps, high-efficiency electric motors, and solar modules." It said that at the upper price band, OSPL is available at a reasonable valuation of 21x at its annualised 9MFY25 EPS. 'We have a SUBSCRIBE recommendation to this issue for the long-term," it said. Another brokerage firm BP Wealth in its note said, 'Given the company's strong brand equity in solar pumps, diversified product offerings, and integrated manufacturing capabilities, it is well-positioned to capitalise on these structural growth drivers. Its robust domestic distribution network and expanding presence in high-growth states further enhance its ability to monetise the sector's rising demand." The issue is valued at a price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 21.2x on the upper price band based on FY25 earnings (annualised), which is relatively cheaper compared to its peers. 'We recommend a 'SUBSCRIBE" rating for this issue," it added. Other brokerages Arihant Capital, Deven Choksey, GEPL Capital, Nirmal Bang, SBI Securities, and SMIFS have given the subscribe rating to the Oswal Pumps IPO. Oswal Pumps' Financials & Comparison With Peers The company recorded one of the highest EBITDA margins among peers in FY24 (30.1% in 9MFY25), up from 10.7% in FY22, showcasing clear operating leverage gains. However, competition from established peers and its dependency on tenders for its revenue, remain key risk factors to consider. Oswal Pump's competitors include Kisloskar Brothers, Shakti Pumps, WPIL, and Roto Pumps. Oswal Pumps IPO Objectives Oswal Pumps plans to utilise the IPO proceeds for capital expenditure (Rs 89.86 crore), investment in subsidiary Oswal Solar for new units in Karnal (Rs 272.76 crore), repayment of company borrowings (Rs 280 crore), repayment of Oswal Solar's loans (Rs 31 crore), and towards general corporate purposes. Oswal Pumps IPO: More Info Ahead of the IPO, Oswal Pumps on Thursday mobilised Rs 416.2 crore from anchor investors. The initial public offering (IPO) opened on June 13 and will be closed on June 17. Its allotment will take place on June 18, while its shares are scheduled to be listed on June 20 on both BSE and NSE. The IPO is a combination of a fresh issue of shares valued at Rs 890 crore and an offer-for-sale (OFS) of 81 lakh stocks worth Rs 497.34 crore at the upper end of the price band, by promoter Vivek Gupta. This aggregates the issue size at Rs 1,387.34 crore. IIFL Securities, Axis Capital, CLSA India, JM Financial, and Nuvama Wealth Management are the book-running lead managers to the issue. Will share my thoughts on important global issues, says PM Modi ahead of G7 Summit

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said he will be meeting various leaders during the G7 Summit in Canada and share his thoughts on vital global issues. PM Modi has landed in Calgary, Canada, where he will take part in the G7 Summit. After landing on Tuesday, he posted on his X handle that during his meetings with leaders, he will emphasise the Global South priorities. 'Landed in Calgary, Canada, to take part in the G7 Summit. Will be meeting various leaders at the Summit and sharing my thoughts on important global issues. Will also be emphasising the priorities of the Global South,' PM Modi posted on his X handle. He arrived in Calgary to participate in the G7 Summit at the invitation of Canada's Prime Minister Mark Carney. On arrival, he was received by Acting Indian High Commissioner Chinmoy Naik, Canadian officials, and leaders of Canada's First Nation, the native people of the country. He will go to the picturesque resort town of Kananaskis, where the summit started earlier on Monday under tight security, and will feature him and other invitees at Tuesday's session. PM Modi arrived in Canada after a successful visit to Cyprus, where he had "wide-ranging talks, covering the full range of India-Cyprus relations" with President Nikos Christodoulides. Before leaving India, PM Modi posted on X that the G7 summit "will give a great platform to exchange perspectives on various global issues and elaborate on the priorities of the Global South". He will be interacting with G7 leaders, President Emmanuel Macron of France, Prime Ministers Keir Starmer of Britain, Giorgia Meloni of Italy, Shigeru Ishiba of Japan, Chancellor Friedrich Merz of Germany, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa along with host Carney, who is also the President of G7. PM Modi will not be meeting US President Donald Trump, who was cutting short his presence at the summit to return home to deal with the Iran-Israel crisis. Other invitees to the G7 meeting are Presidents Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine, Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva of Brazil, and Lee Jae-Myung of South Korea, and Prime Ministers Anthony Albanese of Australia and Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa. This will be an opportunity for PM Modi to have face-to-face meetings with these powerful leaders of industrialised countries after the April 22 Pahalgam terrorist attack and Operation Sindoor targeting terrorist outfits operating in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir. PM Modi's visit also comes at a pivotal moment for India-Canada relations, which Carney is trying to reset after it had been marred by former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who was influenced by Khalistan supporters.

Trai rejects operators' call to disband India's public WiFi project, caps tariffs

Telecom operators received a setback as the sector regulator rejected their calls to scrap the country's public WiFi project and decided to cap bandwidth pricing under the scheme to provide affordable internet connectivity. Operators cannot charge public data offices (PDOs) more than twice the tariff applicable to retail subscribers for fiber broadband services with speeds up to 200 Mbps, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) said in its new tariff order. Under the Prime Minister Wi-Fi Access Network Interface (PM-Wani) project, PDOs are local and small shops that buy internet bandwidth from operators to resell as public WiFi hotspots and internet sachets of ₹5-10 per day to consumers in rural and other areas. 'This pricing framework has been designed to appropriately balance the interests of all stakeholders by ensuring affordability for small-scale Public Data Offices (PDOs) while also providing economic incentives to service providers," Trai said in its Telecommunication Tariff (Seventy First Amendment) Order, 2025. Also Read: Trai moves to rein in spam calls with new digital consent rule The PM-Wani scheme, which started in 2020, has been struggling to take off because of the high pricing charged by telecom operators and internet service providers. The government targeted 10 million public WiFi hotspots across the country by 2022, and 50 million by 2030. However, according to government data, about 333,215 hotspots have been deployed so far, with nearly half of those in Delhi. The operators were charging up to ₹8 lakh per annum from PDOs for providing bandwidth using expensive internet leased lines. The Broadband India Forum, which represents Big Tech companies, blamed the dearth of public WiFi hotspots in India on 'predatory pricing' by the carriers. Later, the government scrapped the commercial agreement norm under which the carriers were providing connectivity to PDOs via leased lines. Trai rejects arguments According to Trai, the new tariff framework takes into account the prevailing market conditions, current levels of adoption of PM-WANI services, as well as potential future growth. 'By aligning with these considerations, the framework aims to facilitate the orderly, sustainable, and inclusive growth of the public Wi-Fi ecosystem under the PM-WANI initiative." During the consultations on the tariff order, the telecom operators had pushed back against capping the bandwidth tariffs and wanted Trai to leave them to market forces, calling PDOs their competition. Also Read: Next-gen telecom tech to get ₹1,000-crore yearly R&D boost under telecom policy 'They are buying the service (bandwidth) for reselling. Why should any operator be forced to provide its network services to its competitors at the arbitrarily regulated prices for building their network," Ravi Gandhi, president and chief regulatory officer of Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd, had told Trai during a discussion in April. Besides, telecom operators said the concept of public WiFi in general is no more relevant in the country, given the spread of affordable 4G and 5G services and wanted the government to disband the project. Trai countered that the operators face no competition from PDOs. 'It is pertinent to mention that, as per the PM-WANI Central Registry, there are approximately 3 lakh registered PDOs, which constitute only a minimal percentage (0.7%) of the total FTTH (fiber-to-the-home) connections (4 crore approx). Given this relatively low number, the impact of PDOs on overall broadband market appears insignificant," Trai said in the order. Trai also highlighted that a large number of PDOs are small, residential setups located in low-income neighborhoods, providing affordable and accessible broadband internet to the masses, especially the subscribers at the bottom of the pyramid. 'These Public Data Offices generally have a limited data consumption under PM-WANI scheme as compared with regular retail connection, i.e. the data consumption under PM-WANI scheme is generally less than the data consumed for personal use out of this connection," Trai said. High broadband connectivity costs can act as a significant entry barrier for such small entities and may adversely impact the proliferation of the PM-WANI scheme. Also Read: Telcos breathe easy as DoT blocks Trai's bank guarantee demand In its draft order, Trai had not specified the 200 Mbps limit—the two-times tariff cap applied generally for all the plans, regardless of speed. In the new order, it said the current usage by most PDOs remains within the 100 Mbps range, and to support their growth and the overall expansion of the PM-WANI service, provisioning of broadband FTTH plans with bandwidths of up to 200 Mbps would offer sufficient flexibility to meet future demand. Trai has not capped the tariff for broadband connectivity to PDOs for bandwidth capacity exceeding 200 Mbps.
