PM wants swift, transparent probe into Zara Qairina's death

By: Bernama Text Size: Pic by Bernama KOTA KINABALU: The death of student Zara Qairina Mahathir has drawn the attention of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim ( pic ), who stressed that investigations must be conducted transparently and thoroughly. The prime minister said he had discussed the matter with Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail and Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail to ensure the probe is conducted swiftly and comprehensively. 'There was a death recently, and the Education Minister (Fadhlina Sidek) is being attacked and accused of various things. What has become of our country? This death is not a trivial matter,' he said during his speech at the closing ceremony of the National Farmers, Breeders and Fishermen Day 2025 here today. Also present were Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu and his deputy Datuk Seri Arthur Joseph Kurup. Anwar also reminded the public not to make speculations or accusations without evidence, emphasising that Malaysia is a nation founded on the rule of law. 'This is a nation of law, not slander. Whoever is involved in a criminal act such as murder will not be protected,' Anwar said. Zara Qairina, 13, was believed to have fallen from the third floor and was found unconscious in a drain near her school dormitory in Papar, Sabah, at 4 am on July 16. She was pronounced dead at Queen Elizabeth I Hospital here on July 17. The student's death quickly went viral, sparking widespread public reaction on social media. Two children among injured in Russia's overnight attack on Kharkiv region, Ukraine says
(Reuters) -Two children were among several people injured in Russia's largest air attack on the Ukrainian town of Lozova since the war began, the head of the local administration said on Tuesday. "Critical infrastructure, apartment buildings and private homes have been damaged," Serhiy Zelenskiy, the head of the city's council, said on the Telegram messaging app. "Lozova has endured the largest attack since the beginning of the war," he said, adding several people including two children were wounded in the town in the eastern Ukrainian region of Kharkiv. The Kharkiv region, which lies near the border with Russia, has been the target of regular Russian drone and missile attacks since the start of the war. Malaysia ready to send monitoring team to Thailand-Cambodia border if requested, says Anwar
KUALA LUMPUR: Putrajaya is prepared to send a monitoring team to the Thailand-Cambodia border if requested by both countries, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. However, the Prime Minister said that the decision regarding military presence for monitoring purposes will be made later as the situation along the borders is currently under control. 'Whether military presence is needed for monitoring will be decided later. So far, the situation remains under control, although it is highly sensitive and tense. 'Currently, we have satellites assisting in monitoring, and there is an agreement that this will be coordinated by the Malaysian Defence Attaché. 'The Defence Attaché, along with Asean countries, is only monitoring from a distance,' he said during the Prime Minister's Question Time at the Dewan Rakyat on Tuesday (Aug 5). He was responding to Rodiyah Sapiee (GPS–Batang Sadong), who asked about Malaysia's role in facilitating peace talks and a ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia. Anwar also said that so far both countries only requested Malaysia to coordinate further talks among the defence senior officials in Kuala Lumpur, with the decision set to be reached on or by Thursday (Aug 7). In a supplementary question by Rodiyah on whether there should be similar peace frameworks to address such disputes through the Asean Regional Forum, Anwar said that it was still too early to decide. 'In our decision that I conveyed to Prime Minister Hun Manet of Cambodia and Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai of Thailand, we want both of them to agree and reach a final consensus, with Malaysia as a witness, and then be supported by all Asean countries,' he added. Earlier, Anwar expressed gratitude to all parties, including Opposition MPs, for their support of the Malaysia-led ceasefire. On July 28, Thailand and Cambodia agreed to an unconditional and immediate ceasefire following a special meeting in Putrajaya chaired by Anwar.

Opposition lawmakers' claims show they haven't read 13MP document, says PM
KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has dismissed Opposition claims that the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) overlooks bumiputra development. Anwar said such claims indicate a failure to read the 13MP document, which prioritises significant allocations for bumiputras. "We need to study 13MP thoroughly. Otherwise, there's a misconception that funds are only for Chinese new villages and not bumiputra. Critics clearly haven't read it. "PuTERA35 includes substantial spending for bumiputra, like the Malay reserve in Bandar Malaysia, which is unprecedented since independence.
