Gosport bus station demolition halted for nesting birds
Plans to demolish a town's old bus station have been halted by nesting birds.Gosport Borough Council said it had to delay the demolition of the site in the town centre "due to the bird nesting season and legal requirements to protect wildlife".Gosport bus station, which opened in 1972 with 10 stands, is to be transformed into a new park as part of the council's waterfront regeneration scheme.The local authority said it hoped to resume work within "the next few weeks" and planned to open the space to the public in the autumn.
A new bus interchange opened in the town in October.

Two young sisters killed in Air India crash after going to surprise their gran
A Boeing Dreamliner plane bound for London Gatwick and carrying 242 people tragically crashed and exploded shortly after take-off from Ahmedabad Airport yesterday Two sisters killed in the Air India tragedy had flown to India to visit their grandmother for her birthday. Dhir and Heer Baxi, who were both in their 20s, travelled from London to Ahmedabad to visit their family for the special day. But on their return to London Gatwick, the plane barely managed to get off the runway before smashing in to a nearby medical college, exploding into a fiery ball and killing 241 of the 242 people on board. Their family described the girls as "young talents" as they spoke of their heartbreak today. Dhir was studying to become a fashion designer, while her sister worked in an investment and renewable energy company as a project director. Previously, she worked in Singapore, which is where it's understood the sisters grew up. Speaking to The Telegraph, their older brother Ishan said: "I can't express what my complete family is going through – shell shocked, not coming to terms is what I can say right now "Both had a natural aura of helping and always cared about family values. They both had aspirations to be successful enough to roam around the world, tension-free. Along with their parents, they both had a proclivity towards modernisation without changing traditional values. "Both my sisters know what is right and what is wrong, thus whatever work they carried out, in academics or fashion, they always got success with no conflicts amongst peers or seniors." A loved one also wrote "RIP young talent" under the last Instagram post on Heer's feed. In another tragic tale from the horrific crash yesterday, a bride who was meeting her husband for the first time since their wedding was also named as one of the victims. Khushboo Rajpurohit, 21, was on board yesterday when the Boeing Dreamliner plane tragically crashed and exploded shortly after take-off - killing her and 240 other people. Ms Rajpurohit, who was from a small village called Araba in Rajasthan, India, had married husband Manfool Singh, who studies in London, back in January. She had taken a smiling selfie with a relative at the airport shortly before take-off - but would never reach her destination. Also thought to have died is four-year-old Sara Nanabawa, who was travelling with her parents Akeel and Hannaa when the aircraft smashed into a doctors' hostel in Ahmedabad, India. A family of five from Rajasthan who were relocating to London are also feared dead. In one selfie taken seconds before take-off, Komi Vyas and husband Prateek Joshi, both doctors, were seen smiling as they sat on the aisle opposite their children. Joshi had moved to London a few years ago, and his family were set to join him. Four medical students inside the struck building are believed to have been killed, along with four relatives who were in the building. One man - a British national - miraculously survived the disaster.

Mountain rescue team issues statement over Watkin Path pools tragedy

More info Mountain rescuers have sent their "deepest sympathies" to the families and friends of two women who died at a North Wales beauty spot. The women had been visiting the pools on the Watkin path on Yr Wyddfa (formerly known as Snowdon). Llanberis Mountain Rescue Teams and Aberglaslyn Mountain Rescue Team were involved in the incident which happened at Nant Gwynant on Wednesday at about 9.30pm. However the women, who have not been named, could not be saved. Jurgen Dissmann, Chair of Llanberis Mountain Rescue Team, posted an online message about the tragedy. He said: 'On behalf of Llanberis Mountain Rescue Team, I extend our deepest sympathies to the families and friends of the two women who sadly lost their lives. They were told one woman had been pulled from the pools which have become hugely popular in recent years. A second woman was reported to be still in the water. Police launched a joint operation with the Llanberis Mountain Rescue Team, Aberglaslyn Mountain Rescue Team, Air Ambulance and the Coastguard Rescue Helicopter. Despite desperate efforts to save them the two women were pronounced dead at the scene. A North Wales Police spokesperson said yesterday: "Police were called at 21:31hrs following a report that one female had been pulled from the water, and another was reported to be in the water at the pools on the Watkin Path. "The Llanberis Mountain Rescue Team were dispatched to the area along with North Wales Police, the Air Ambulance and the Coastguard Rescue Helicopter. The second female was pulled from the water, however, despite the best efforts of all involved both were pronounced dead at the scene." Just a short hike from the A498, the Watkin Path pools have long been popular but have more recently seen an explosion of interest after featuring on tourism apps such as Instagram and TikTok. Air India Boeing 787 Dreamliner crash death toll could rise
It is one of the deadliest plane crashes in terms of the number of British nationals killed and the first involving a 787. There are fears the number of people killed on the ground could rise. Briton Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, 40, is believed to be the only survivor of the crash. He was in seat 11A, next to one of the aircraft's emergency exits. Speaking outside the family home in Leicester, his brother, Nayan Kumar Ramesh, 27, said: 'We were just shocked as soon as we heard it. 'I last spoke to him yesterday morning. We're devastated, just devastated. 'He said, 'I have no idea how I exited the plane'.' British couple Fiongal and Jamie Greenlaw-Meek, who run a spiritual wellness centre, were said to be among the dead. Mr Greenlaw-Meek appeared on ITV's This Morning earlier this year, and former editor of the show Martin Frizell praised his 'vibrancy' and 'enthusiasm'. 'So so sad to hear that Fiongal Greenlaw-Meek and his partner are reported to be among the passengers and crew killed today on board the Air India flight bound for Gatwick,' he said in an Instagram post. The Gloucester Muslim Community group offered 'sincere and deepest condolences' after Akeel Nanabawa, his wife Hannaa and their daughter Sara were reported to be among the victims. 'During this moment of overwhelming sorrow, our hearts go out to all those left behind,' a statement said. 'No words can truly ease the pain of such a profound loss, but we pray that the family may find solace in the tremendous outpouring of compassion and solidarity from communities across the world.' Aviation experts have speculated about a number of possible causes for the crash, from both engines failing – possibly due to a bird strike, as happened in the so-called Miracle on the Hudson in 2009 – to the flaps on the aircraft's wings not being set to the correct position for take-off. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the crash site and a local hospital on Friday morning. 'The loss of so many lives in such a sudden and heartbreaking manner is beyond words. Condolences to all the bereaved families,' he wrote in a post on X. 'We understand their pain and also know that the void left behind will be felt for years to come.' Footage posted to Mr Modhi's official YouTube channel showed him examining the crash site and interacting with victims in hospital. Air India chief executive Campbell Wilson visited the area, according to the BBC,but did not take questions from media. Tata Group, the parent company of Air India, said it would provide 10 million rupees (around £86,000) to the families of each of those killed in the crash. The company said it would also cover the medical costs of the injured and provide support in the 'building up' of the medical college. Air India has set up friends and relatives assistance centres at Gatwick, Mumbai, Delhi and Ahmedabad airports to provide support in the wake of AI171's crash. 'These centres are facilitating the travel of family members to Ahmedabad,' the airline said in a post on X. UK officials are being deployed to India to support the investigation, the Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) said. US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy confirmed US teams from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) were also headed to India with support from Boeing and GE Aerospace. He told reporters it was 'way too premature' to ground Boeing 737s in the aftermath of the crash. 'They have to get on the ground and take a look,' he said. 'People are looking at videos and trying to assess what happened, which is never a strong, smart way to make decisions on what took place.' The King said he was 'desperately shocked' and Buckingham Palace said he was being kept updated. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said the UK was in constant contact with Indian authorities. The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office said any British nationals requiring consular assistance, or who have concerns about family or friends, should call 020 7008 5000.
