Patriots RB coach admits TreVeyon Henderson snubbed him in college
Rookie running back TreVeyon Henderson may be a national champion and a former Ohio State Buckeye, but that wouldn't have been the case if New England Patriots coach Tony Dews had his way.
Dews revealed that he pushed hard in recruiting Henderson all the way back in 2017, when he was still the running backs coach for West Virginia. He knew the talent was electric back then, and he was determined to add a potential game-changer to the Mountaineers' offensive backfield.
Henderson was a highly-touted running back recruit, ranking as the 11th overall player in the 2021 class, the top running back in the class and the top player in his class from the state of West Virginia, according to 247 Sports' recruit rankings.
Fast forward eight years later, and Dews will finally have an opportunity to work with Henderson in New England. The highly-touted running back was taken in the second round of the 2025 NFL draft by the Patriots.
'I was very excited about it. I tried to recruit him back in high school - years ago when I was at West Virginia," said Dews, via MassLive's Mark Daniels. "He snubbed me. But it was good to be able to reconnect with him. Obviously, I'm very excited about him and what he might be able to do to help us going forward.'
Henderson's addition to a Patriots' offensive backfield that also includes Rhamondre Stevenson, Antonio Gibson and rookie Lan Larison gives Dews plenty to work with in the 2025 season.
It's a room crowded with talent, including a legitimate home run threat with the former Buckeye.

Five-star safety Bralan Womack commits to Auburn over Ohio State
Auburn football has landed its biggest pledge of the 2026 cycle in the nation's top safety, Bralan Womack. Womack, a five-star safety from Flowood, Mississippi, announced his commitment to Auburn on Thursday, choosing the Tigers over Ohio State, Florida, and Texas A&M. Womack began trending to Auburn during his official visit in June when he told Christian Clemente of Auburn Undercover that he felt "comfortable" at Auburn. Following his visit, the Director of Recruiting for Rivals, Chad Simmons, shared during an episode of the Simmons Scoop earlier this month that Auburn and Ohio State were "toe-to-toe", which led to a prediction that favored Auburn to land Womack by Steve Wiltfong, also of Rivals. The talented safety detailed his reasoning for choosing Auburn with Tom Loy of 247Sports following his decision. "Just a relationships. From a football standpoint, I believe in coach (DJ) Durkin and coach (Hugh) Freeze to take care of the football aspect," Womack said. "But you also want to enjoy your time in college. You don't want to be miserable in college. You can't just pick a school because they are good at football. I know Auburn wasn't the best last year, but like my mom says, 'God will never send you somewhere that's perfect, but He will send you somewhere that has a purpose.' I'm very confident in this decision." The addition of the nation's top safety has Auburn inching closer to a top-25 class. The Tigers now rank No. 35 in 247Sports' 2026 recruiting rankings with one five-star and four four-stars in the class. Alabama football's future non-conference schedules could be changing. But those changes are something the Crimson Tide has been planning for since as early as 2019. On Thursday, Aug. 21, the SEC announced it will implement a nine-game conference schedule starting in 2026. The SEC is also mandating that each school schedule at least one Power 4 opponent or Notre Dame each season. The Crimson Tide already has a who's who of games scheduled between 2026-2035, with home-and-home series scheduled against teams like Ohio State, Notre Dame, West Virginia, Oklahoma State and Georgia Tech. In those game contracts, acquired by The Tuscaloosa News, Alabama and its opponents have language that accommodates potential changes in conference scheduling. "The teams acknowledge the long-term nature of football schedule planning and that conference rules, including the requirement to play a minimum number of games each season within their respective conferences, as well as the prospect that conference alignments could change, dictating that a game cannot be played during the 2027 or 2028 season," Alabama's game contract with Ohio State, which was drawn up in May 2020, states. "Accordingly, should this occur, the teams agree to discuss in good faith a future date(s) for the game(s) to be played." Alabama put the same language in its three-game agreement with South Florida in April 2019, and ahead of its home-and-home meetings with Florida State, scheduled in October 2019, and with Wisconsin, which was scheduled in July 2019 Similar language can be found in game contracts for future Alabama home-and-home meetings with Arizona, Boston College, Notre Dame, Oklahoma State, Virginia Tech and West Virginia. The Tuscaloosa News does not have game contracts for Alabama's future games against and Minnesota.
