Warriors Linked to Polarizing Move for 3-Time All-Star

The Golden State Warriors have been very quiet this offseason and seem to be primarily focused on getting things sorted out with the Jonathan Kuminga drama.
The Warriors are widely viewed as legitimate contenders heading into the 2025-26 NBA campaign thanks to how strong they looked after acquiring Jimmy Butler midway through last year, but there is also no question that they can afford to add another piece.

We know they have been in on Al Horford in free agency, and there has been some chatter that Horford has agreed to a verbal commitment with Golden State. But until a contract is signed, no one can say anything for sure.
Meanwhile, Bleacher Report's Eric Pincus has connected the Warriors to another former All-Star, although this one is a bit more polarizing than Horford: Ben Simmons. More specifically, Pincus thinks Golden State should add Simmons if Kuminga ultimately does not return.

Neither has earned their contracts through individual scoring, but through defense and playmaking. With an elite shooter like Steph Curry and a tough all-around competitor like Jimmy Butler, Golden State is a formidable contender in the Western Conference when healthy."
Simmons played 51 games between the Brooklyn Nets and Los Angeles Clippers last season, averaging five points, 5.6 assists and 4.7 rebounds over 22 minutes per game while shooting 52 percent from the floor.
There was a time when the 29-year-old was viewed as one of the NBA's brightest young stars during his Philadelphia 76ers days, but his inconsistent scoring ability and back issues sabotaged his ascent.

Simmons has played in a grand total of 66 games over the last two seasons and hasn't appeared in 60 contests in any one individual campaign since 2018-19, so he definitely comes with significant baggage.
However, if the Warriors are able to sign him on a cheap deal, it might not hurt to give the three-time All-Star a chance.
Simmons owns career averages of 13.1 points, 7.4 rebounds and 7.2 assists per game.

Report: Golden State Warriors still believe they will sign Boston Celtics big Al Horford
The Golden State Warriors still believe they will sign Boston Celtics big man alum Al Horford once they finish resolving their current restricted free agency situation with forward Jonathan Kuminga, per recent reporting from Bleacher Report NBA analyst Jake Fischer. Speaking in a recent episode of the "NBA Insider Notebook," Fischer relates (h/t the Dallas Hoops Journal's Ashish Mathur) that "the Warriors still remain very confident that Al Horford is waiting for whatever finality will come to Jonathan Kuminga's restricted free agency with Golden State." "Depending on where the Warriors land in cap tax situation, I believe (Horford) is slated to potentially make upwards of the full taxpayer mid-level exception," the Bleacher Report analyst said. "There has also been some discussion about whether or not he could potentially be receiving a two-year deal with a player option on his deal as well." Horford is widely seen as all but certain to leave the Celtics organization whether he ends up signing with the Dubs or not, with retirement reportedly still on the table for the University of Florida alum. But if he does sign with the Dubs, Boston fans will be monitoring that player option should it pan out as such, with the potential to reunite with the Celtics once they return to contention a possibility through it, albeit an unlikely one. Red Sox promote prospect Jhostynxon Garcia, place OF Wilyer Abreu on injured list
NEW YORK (AP) — After calling up highly-rated prospects Roman Anthony and Marcelo Mayer in June, the Red Sox added another prospect Thursday when they recalled outfielder Jhostynxon Garcia from Triple-A Worcester. Garcia was called up to replace Wilyer Abreu, who was placed on the 10-day injured list with a right calf strain. Abreu originally was injured Sunday and the move is retroactive to Monday. The 22-year-old Garcia signed with the Red Sox as a non-drafted free agent from Venezuela in 2019 and is Boston's No. 3 prospect according to which also ranks him as the 77th overall prospect in baseball. He was given the nickname 'The Password' by fans on social media due to the spelling of his first name. 'He swings a lot,' manager Alex Cora said about Garcia before the Red Sox opened a four-game series with the Yankees. 'Drives the ball to right-center, can do that with two strikes. He's a great defender and a good baserunner.' Garcia was not in the starting lineup Thursday but is likely to start in center field Friday. Garcia has split this season between Double-A Portland and Worcester and hit .289 with 20 homers, 73 RBIs and an .875 OPS while primarily starting in center field. With Worcester, Garcia is hitting .303 with 17 homers and 56 RBIs. Abreu is hitting .253 with a team-leading 22 homers and 69 RBIs in 108 games. Cora said he did not get any testing but is optimistic Abreu will miss the minimum amount of time. 'I think it's the right move and hopefully he'll be back with us as soon as possible,' Cora said. Promoting Garcia and putting Abreu on the IL was among five roster moves for the Red Sox, who began Thursday with eight losses in their last 12 games and trail the Yankees by two games for the AL's first wild-card. Infielder David Hamilton was recalled from Worcester along with pitcher Richard Fitts. Boston also designated infielder Abraham Toro for assignment. Hamilton, who hit eighth and started at second base Thursday, is hitting .174 with three homers and 12 RBIs in 69 games this season. He also has 17 stolen bases in 21 chances after stealing 33 bases in 98 games last season. Toro hit .239 with seven homers and 27 RBIs in 77 games. He batted .271 before the All-Star break but hit .171 over his last 25 games. 'We're not here without him,' Cora said about Toro. 'He did an amazing job.' Fitts is 1-4 with a 4.83 ERA in 10 starts for the Red Sox, who acquired him from the Yankees for Alex Verdugo in December 2023. He last started for Boston on July 28 in Minnesota and was 2-1 with a 4.00 ERA in six starts at Worcester. Walker Buehler, who is 7-7 with a 5.40 ERA in 22 starts, is slated to start Monday in Baltimore but Cora said the Red Sox had not talked about it yet.

Suns Called Out For Costly $100 Million Offseason Decision
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Phoenix Suns made arguably the worst move of the offseason by agreeing to a contract buyout with Bradley Beal. More news: 76ers' 3-Player Trade Idea Sends Out Jared McCain for $36 Million Forward The Suns opted to let the three-time All-Star sign elsewhere, and eat the remaining nearly $100 million of his contract. Beal agreed to a two-year, $11 million deal with the Los Angeles Clippers soon after the Suns bought him out. "He's a great guy," Suns owner Mat Ishbia said in July. "Just not a fit with the Phoenix Suns going forward. We told him that. We made that decision. We let them know we wanted to move forward without him. It doesn't mean he's a bad guy. It doesn't mean he's a bad player." PHOENIX, ARIZONA - APRIL 11: Bradley Beal #3 of the Phoenix Suns reacts during the second half of the NBA game at PHX Arena on April 11, 2025 in Phoenix, Arizona. PHOENIX, ARIZONA - APRIL 11: Bradley Beal #3 of the Phoenix Suns reacts during the second half of the NBA game at PHX Arena on April 11, 2025 in Phoenix, the move gave the team financial flexibility by taking them out of the second apron and provided them with more access to more tradable draft picks, Bleacher Report's Dan Favale criticized the Suns for the contract buyout. More news: Warriors' Draymond Green Calls Out West Rival in Brutal Message "Phoenix is paying Beal to play for the Los Angeles Clippers its tax bill," Favale writes. "Getting out of the second apron is a big deal for the Suns—and not just because it saves team governor Mat Ishbia some serious scratch. It helps ensure their 2032 pick is eventually unfrozen and won't be moved to the end of the first round. But if you view setting $19.4 million on fire for five consecutive years as the only way to elude the second apron, something's off. "It's one thing if Phoenix did this to pave the way for another big move. It didn't. Devin Booker's extension doesn't count. The Suns added a whopping one guaranteed year of team control to the equation, and given they're still on the fast track nowhere post-Beal, he was clearly going to sign it no matter what." Throughout his two seasons in the Valley of the Sun, Beal averaged 17.6 points, 4.3 assists and 3.8 rebounds per game while shooting 50.5 percent from the field and 40.7 percent from beyond the arc. Now, Beal will begin a new chapter of his career with the Clippers, a team that is a contender in the Western Conference. The 32-year-old is poised to be a great fit for LA alongside Kawhi Leonard and James Harden as a playmaker and scorer for the Clippers.
