India-Pakistan air battle during Op Sindoor: What is an ELINT, AEW&C aircraft and why the IAF's kill is important

In what maybe one of the most high-profile revelations of India-Pakistan escalation, the Indian Air Force (IAF) said that it scored the largest ever recorded surface-to-air kill.
During Operation Sindoor, a long-range strike from about 300 kilometres brought down what the IAF believes was either an ELINT or an AEW&C aircraft, both considered high-value surveillance and command platforms.
Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal AP Singh said, 'We have at least five fighters confirmed kills and one large aircraft, which could be either an ELINT aircraft or an AEW&C aircraft… taken on at a distance of about 300 kilometres.'
The strike also targeted key Pakistan Air Force bases. At Shahbaz Jacobabad airfield, Singh said half an F-16 hangar was destroyed, damaging aircraft inside, while two command and control centres and six radar systems were also neutralised.

What is an ELINT aircraft?
ELINT stands for Electronic Intelligence. These aircraft intercept and analyse electronic signals from enemy radars, communication systems, and air defence networks.
ELINT aircraft give military planners critical data on the opponent's surveillance coverage, enabling them to avoid detection and launch precision strikes.
What is an AEW&C Aircraft and its role in air battles?
AEW&C stands for Airborne Early Warning and Control. These aircraft carry advanced radar systems that can detect and track multiple targets, airborne, maritime, or ground, over long distances. AEW&C platforms are essential for spotting incoming aircraft early, directing interceptors, and coordinating large-scale operations in real time. They act as flying command centres that keep air forces informed and responsive.
Why this kill was important during Op Sindoor? Destroying an ELINT or AEW&C aircraft has strategic consequences. It reduces enemy's ability to monitor airspace, coordinate defences, and respond to threats. Singh's statement very well hints that the IAF's long-range strike not only delivered a tactical victory but also dealt a major blow to Pakistan's aerial surveillance and command network.

Congress: ‘Why was Op Sindoor stopped, who put pressure?'

The Congress Saturday asked PM Narendra Modi why he stopped Operation Sindoor on May 10 and under whose pressure, after IAF chief Air Chief Marshal A P Singh said 'at least' five Pakistani fighter jets and 'one large aircraft' were downed during Operation Sindoor. Congress MP and party's communication in charge Jairam Ramesh said on X, '… it becomes even more shocking that the PM suddenly stopped Operation Sindoor. Where did the pressure on the PM come from, and why did he have to relent so quickly?' Congress MP Sukhdeo Bhagat said, 'I have faith in the Army and in the government. The Army says the incident took place on April 22, followed by Operation Sindoor. In all these days, why didn't the government give an answer? Even when discussions took place in the House, was their mouth sealed shut?' TMC MP Sagarika Ghose said: 'I am glad the IAF chief has set the record straight but some questions remain. First, why did it take 3 months for the government to put out such a statement during which Pakistan was able to push its own narrative across global media. Second, why didn't the Defence Minister reveal this in the House. And third, given this clear air superiority of India, why did Modi hastily agree to a ceasefire announced by Donald Trump.'

Sinister intentions of power-hungry Rahul exposed: BJP

Hours after IAF chief Air Chief Marshal A P Singh's statement, the BJP Saturday lashed out at Lok Sabha LoP Rahul Gandhi and the Congress, saying that when the Armed Forces personnel sacrifice their lives for the nation's security, 'parties like Rahul Gandhi and Congress, driven by their hunger for power, never hesitate to insult the Army, from surgical strikes to Operation Sindoor'. Accusing Gandhi, his party, and their 'arrogant alliance' of having 'hurt the soul of the nation' and 'speaking the language of the enemy', Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said on X, 'This is not just politics, but proof of an anti-national mindset. Their sinister intentions are continuously being exposed before the nation.' Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said the IAF chief's statement should put the Congress to shame for 'pushing the Pakistani narrative'. In a post on X, Sarma said, 'First, their leaders peddled lies on India's losses whereas we now have quantifiable, detailed and irrefutable proof of the wrath inflicted upon the enemy,' he said. 'Second, they ran another Pak-originated disinformation campaign claiming the Modi Govt put restrictions on the operational capability of our forces. This too has been debunked comprehensively,' he said.

Congress MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira's ex-PSO held at Delhi airport in drugs case

Bathinda: Congress MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira's former personal security officer (PSO) Joga Singh was arrested at Indira Gandhi International Airport, Delhi, on Saturday in connection with an NDPS Act case registered in Fazilka in Sept 2023. Joga Singh was also booked in the case when Khaira was arrested from his Chandigarh residence for alleged links with a convict in a 2015 NDPS case registered in Fazilka. Police have claimed that they were in possession of details of calls that Khaira and Joga Singh had with the drug convict and his aide. Fazilka senior superintendent of police (SSP) Gurmeet Singh said a lookout circular (LOC) had already been issued against Joga Singh. "He was about to fly to Australia when we arrested him. An investigation is underway," he said. Khaira said head constable Joga Singh was his PSO in 2015, but he retired some years ago. "He had no role in the case except for taking some calls from the convict in the NDPS case, and now he was going to Australia with his wife to meet his son. When I was named in the FIR in Sept 2023, police also booked Joga Singh. The Supreme Court on April 10, 2024, stayed proceedings in the trial court, which continue to be stayed till now," Khaira said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Machala: Unsold Sofas Prices May Surprise You (Prices May Surprise You) Sofas | Search Ads Search Now Undo Khaira said the call details police were talking about were related to drug-trafficking convict Gurdev Singh, who was chairman of the market committee in Dilwan. He said Gurdev belonged to his assembly constituency, Bholath. "He used to call me and Joga Singh; we had no more connection with him," added Khaira. While Khaira claims that he only had a work-related relationship with Gurdev Singh, Punjab Police have alleged that he is an aide of the Congress leader. An NDPS Act case was registered at Jalalabad Sadar police station on Mar 5, 2015, after police arrested eight persons and seized 2kg heroin, 2 Pakistani SIMs, 1 Pakistani mobile phone, 24 gold biscuits, and 2 small firearms. In 2015, a special investigation team (SIT), led by the then Ferozepur DIG Amar Singh Chahal, had claimed that Gurdev Singh was the mastermind of the racket. He was later convicted in the case. The SIT had claimed that Gurdev Singh had spoken to Khaira on the phone on 78 occasions in 11 months of 2014-15. The same SIT said as police had become aware of his activities, Gurdev switched off his mobile phone on Feb 28, 2015. However, the SIT said, Gurdev Singh remained in touch with Khaira through Joga Singh. Police have alleged that Gurdev Singh spoke to Khaira six times from Feb 28 to Mar 4, 2015, from his driver Manjit Singh's number to Khaira through Joga Singh's number. When it initially filed the chargesheet in the case on Sep 16, 2015, Fazilka police had not named Khaira. In 2023, AAP govt had formed another SIT, which then arrested Khaira.
