26 illegal miners granted bail in Barberton court
The Barberton magistrate's court on Monday released the 26 on R2,000 bail each after the court considered they had no previous convictions, had fixed addresses and no pending cases.
They are among hundreds arrested during a joint operation between Sheba Mine and police on Friday, as part of the ongoing Vala Umgodi operation targeting illegal mining syndicates. The arrests included four juveniles.
National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Monica Nyuswa said 'they face charges, including trespassing, theft of gold-bearing material and contravention of the Immigration Act'.
Nyuswa said the court warned those granted bail not to commit any offence while on release.
'The state intends to oppose bail for those with previous convictions and pending cases,' she said.
The remaining accused were remanded. The case was postponed to August 11 and 12 for address verification and possible further bail applications.
The NPA said illegal mining has a negative effect on the economy and society, posing risks to health and safety and contributing to environmental degradation.

Meanwhile, Minister of Public Works Dean Macpherson is expected to address the media on Thursday following an explosive exposé by Daily Maverick of an attempted bribery of one of its investigative journalists by the two IDT officials. On Tuesday, Daily Maverick carried video footage and recordings of this blatant attempt to bribe its journalist, Pieter-Louis Myburgh. Suspended IDT CEO Malaka and spokesperson Makgolane attempted to pay Daily Maverick investigative journalist Pieter-Louis Myburgh R60,000 in cash over the weekend to suppress an investigation into Malaka's personal dealings and questionable IDT contracts. The IDT, a very important, if lesser known, government body, spends upwards of R4-billion each year on social infrastructure projects, such as building schools and clinics, and falls under the Ministry of Public Works. Macpherson last week released a forensic report into a R836-million oxygen tender awarded to a ghost company that was first exposed by Daily Maverick. The report recommended that Malaka be suspended. Malaka was placed on precautionary suspension on Friday. Now Macpherson's remarks at Wednesday's briefing are expected to set the tone for the government's broader response. The attempted bribe, which took place during a meeting in Stellenbosch, was captured on camera. Myburgh photographed the cash, delivered in a white Dior shopping bag, and recorded video and audio of the exchange. Makgolane also sweetened the offer with promises of R100,000 in monthly payments and influence over IDT tenders. In a statement on the briefing, his department confirmed that Macpherson would respond directly to the 'serious allegations by Daily Maverick that Malaka sought to bribe journalist Pieter-Louis Myburgh'. Posting to social platform X yesterday morning, Macpherson said he planned to consult with the IDT board later in the day. The statement also warned that the matter appeared to be part of 'what is now likely a paid-for public campaign aimed at discrediting [Macpherson's] efforts to bring stability and good governance to the entity'. What everyone wants to know Daily Maverick's exposé has garnered significant attention from other media, including radio broadcasts. BARBERTON - Over the last few days we've been watching as hundreds of illegal miners have resurfaced from the Sheba mine in Barberton in a joint operation between the police and the mine. On Tuesday, Pan African Resources said that trying to arrest the illegal miners with their own security teams is costing the company. It's one of the reasons for retrenchments. In December in Sabie in Mpumalanga, 153 illegal miners were brought to the surface highlighting the dangers of rescue operations. Three miners lost their lives. The police's Vala Umgodi operation was launched in December 2023 and its targeting illicit mining in seven provinces including Mpumalanga.

Police chase follows R7.2k ATM robbery at Hazyview mall
A man was robbed of R7 200 by two armed suspects while withdrawing cash from an ATM at Hazyview Junction Mall on Tuesday night (August 5). According to Mpumalanga police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane, the incident occurred at around 21:45. The victim was at a Capitec ATM when two men appeared and pointed a firearm at him. ALSO READ: Two arrested for kidnapping and robbery of German tourist in Graskop 'They took the R2 200 he had in his hands and then forced him to withdraw another R5 000 before letting him go,' said Ndubane. The man alerted security officers on site. As they responded, the suspects opened fire, wounding one of the guards in the leg. The officers returned fire, injuring one of the suspects, but both men fled the scene in a silver Honda Ballade heading towards the R538. When Hazyview police and security teams pursued the suspects, their vehicle lost control and veered into a ditch near Numbi Park. One suspect managed to flee, but the injured man was cornered and arrested. He was taken to hospital in critical condition. ALSO READ: Business robbery suspect arrested in Thulamahashe Inside the vehicle, police found an unlicensed firearm, nine live rounds of ammunition and a magazine. Ndubane said the suspect is facing charges of attempted murder, robbery and possession of an unlicensed firearm. Preliminary investigations revealed that the car had been hijacked in Hillbrow in July, and the firearm was reported stolen in Akasia, Pretoria, in May 2024. The investigation continues. Police have not confirmed whether the stolen cash has been recovered.
