North Korean military school delegation departs for Russia, set to visit Military Academy

Pyongyang/Moscow, July 1 (UNI) A delegation from a major North Korean military school has departed for Russia, the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported.
Led by Kim Il Sung Military University chief Kim Kum Chol, the delegation is set to visit Russia's Military Academy of the General Staff of the Armed Forces, the KCNA announced in a brief two-line report today, reports NK News.
This marks Kim's first known visit to Moscow since last July, when Russian Telegram channels reported that he had drowned in a lake near Moscow.
Russian law enforcers and medical authorities confirmed to NK News at the time that the deceased was a man named Kim Kum Chol, who was the same age as the military official.
But the KCNA's report appears to confirm that the North Korean University president did not drown and that it was a coincidence that the man who died in Moscow shared his name.
The military delegation's visit comes following the visit of a Russian delegation to the DPRK, led by Culture Minister Olga Lyubimova, to promote cultural exchanges between Pyongyang and Moscow.
Russia and the DPRK have significantly intensified bilateral exchanges since the latter half of 2023 when North Korean leader Kim Jong Un visited Russia. In June 2024, the two countries signed an agreement on comprehensive strategic partnership.
With Russia providing North Korea with technical expertise on military infrastructure and IT services and the DPRK giving Russia weapons and manpower, Kim Jong Un recently ordered the dispatch of 6,000 military engineers and construction workers to Russia's Kursk region, in addition to nearly 12,000 soldiers already deployed there since October, with South Korea's National Intelligence Agency expecting their arrival around July or August.

Dalai Lama spurns Chinese role in choosing successor, Beijing lashes out

Beijing/Dharamshala, July 2 (UNI) China has lashed out against Tibetan leader Dalai Lama over his comments on appointing his successor to protect the 600-year-old institution of Tibetan Buddhism, saying that only China has the right to appoint the next Dalai Lama. 'The reincarnation of the Dalai Lama, Panchen Lama, and other great Buddhist figures must be chosen by drawing lots from a golden urn and approved by the central government,' said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning. The 89-year-old Tenzin Gyatso had ruled out the legitimacy of any political imposition, stating ahead of his 90th birthday that a successor can only be appointed by the centuries-old traditional practices of Tibetan Buddhism, ruling out any say by China. Back in 2011, when asked whether the institution will continue, the Dalai Lama said he had no 'public discussions' on the issue, leaving much to speculation in the last 14 years. Taking to X, he said that the institution will continue, after 'members of the Tibetan parliament-in-exile, participants in a special general body meeting, members of the Central Tibetan Administration, NGOs, Buddhists from the Himalayan region, Mongolia, Buddhist republics of the Russian Federation and Buddhists in Asia, including mainland China,' wrote to him asking for its continuation. 'In particular, I have received messages through various channels from Tibetans in Tibet making the same appeal. In accordance with all these requests, I am affirming that the institution of the Dalai Lama will continue,' he added. 'The process by which a future Dalai Lama is to be recognised has been clearly established in the September 24, 2011 statement which states that responsibility for doing so will rest exclusively with members of the Gaden Phodrang Trust, the Office of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. 'They should consult the various heads of the Tibetan Buddhist traditions and the reliable oath-bound Dharma Protectors who are linked inseparably to the lineage of the Dalai Lamas. They should accordingly carry out the procedures of search and recognition in accordance with past tradition. I hereby reiterate that the Gaden Phodrang Trust has sole authority to recognise the future reincarnation; no one else has any such authority to interfere in this matter,' he said. UNI ANV PRS

‘Brahmos centre will be taken over by DRDO'

T'puram: BJP state president Rajeev Chandrasekhar said that the BrahMos Center in Thiruvananthapuram will be taken over by defence research and development organisation ( DRDO ). He mentioned that they received assurance from central govt regarding this matter and dismissed rumours about the center's closure as false. BrahMos Aerospace Thiruvananthapuram Ltd (BATL) is a joint venture by the Indian and Russian govts. It will come directly under the control of DRDO, Rajeev said. Currently, the employees there will become staff of the central defence ministry and DRDO. BATL is a significant asset for the Narendra Modi govt's vision of an ' Atmanirbhar Bharat ' (self-reliant India). Once under DRDO, the BrahMos Center will reach its full potential. The BJP chief clarified that Thiruvananthapuram centre will become a crucial hub for safeguarding the country's strategic interests. The claims about job losses for the centre's employees are misleading news. Opposition leader V D Satheesan is merely trying to create controversy on this. He also accused the unions INTUC and AITUC of creating false reports about the centre's closure.
