‘Cop' threatening on call? Soon, check ID on app

Mumbai: To prevent misuse of police identities in digital arrest frauds, the state govt has allotted Rs 4 crore for procurement of digital ID cards for 51,308 police personnel and other staffers of city police.
Home department sources said at present, police personnel carry physical ID cards that can be easily copied, and flagged a recent increase in cybercrimes through misuse of police ID cards, including in digital arrest cases. The smart ID system will incorporate advanced security features, including QR codes and holographic elements, making them virtually difficult to replicate, a govt resolution said.
Citizens who get video calls from purported police personnel—a notorious tactic of cyber fraudsters—can check their credentials by asking them to reveal their digital ID and cross-checking it on a free app that will be developed by
Mumbai police
.
Each digital ID card will contain the police personnel's key details, along with a photograph. The app will provide immediate verification results, displaying an officer's current status and authentication details.
The digital ID cards will be mandatory for all police personnel while on duty, whether in uniform or plain clothes. This requirement applies particularly during investigations, house visits or when interacting with the public, said sources.
The tender process for selecting the technology provider will prioritise companies with experience in secure identification systems. Police will need to ensure that the selected vendor complies with data protection standards, officials said.
The new technology's successful implementation in Mumbai will serve as a blueprint for expansion to other cities and districts across the state, govt said.
Cybersecurity expert and lawyer Prashant Mali, however, expressed doubts over the new system's efficacy in reining in cyber fraudsters. He said it is unlikely to work on two counts. "The victim won't be in the right frame of mind to ascertain if the cop is genuine. Secondly, to create awareness about digital IDs, it will take another decade. Fraudsters are capable of creating fake websites with the data of police personnel.

5 nabbed with cache of arms in hotel raid

New Delhi: In a major crackdown on illegal arms trafficking, the Delhi Police Crime Branch apprehended five men from a hotel in South Delhi's Jangpura area, a statement said. The arrests led to the recovery of a cache of weapons, ammunition, and electronic gadgets from the accused. Acting on a specific input received by Head Constable Amit Tomar, the Crime Branch launched a coordinated operation after learning that a group from Madhya Pradesh suspected of trafficking illegal firearms had checked into a hotel in the Jangpura area. A dedicated team was formed under Inspector Ashish Sharma's leadership and ACP Yashpal Singh's (ER-I) supervision. The raiding party included Sub-Inspectors Prakash and Guman Singh, ASI Sandeep Chawla, and Head Constables Amit, Manish, and Anil. During the operation, the team identified a room locked from the inside and proceeded with caution. Displaying quick action and coordination, the officers managed to breach the room and detain all five suspects without any resistance. A thorough search of the room led to the recovery of two country-made pistols and 14 live cartridges. In addition, Rs 35,000 in cash, eight smartphones, a laptop, and a tablet were also seized. The police believe these gadgets were being used for communication and coordination within the network. An FIR has been registered at the Crime Branch Police Station under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Arms Act.

Ex-MLA Kishore Samrite gets 6 months in jail for threatening to blow up Parliament

NEW DELHI: A Delhi court on Friday sentenced former Madhya Pradesh MLA Kishore Samrite to six months in jail for threatening to blow up Parliament in September 2022 over his 'unfulfilled demands'. Special Judge Vikas Dhull noted that the threatening letter and the suspicious substance were sent to Parliament "which is the temple of Indian democracy". "It is a forum where issues of all hues and pertaining to national interest are expected to be discussed with decorum and in deference to public aspirations. For the highest contemplative body of the country to be subjected to a threat of being blown up with dynamite and the threatening letter to actually be accompanied by a suspicious substance is indeed a grave circum stance which requires an appropriate sentence," he said. It is equally pertinent that the convict is not just an ordinary citizen, but a former MLA from Lanji in Madhya Pradesh's Balaghat district, the judge said. "Being most acquainted and sensitised to the security of Parliamentary establishments and more so to the sanctity of such representative institutions, his dispatch of such a threatening letter to the Parliament acted to normalise the threat of violence towards the elected Houses of the Parliament. Judge imposes Rs 50k fine on Samrite If such conduct is not deterred, it raises the prospect of others emulating the course taken by Samrite for voicing his dissent towards government policies. Perhaps, every such threat would not be accompanied by harmless substances," the judge said. The judge also imposed a fine of Rs. 50,000 on Samrite. A parcel containing some suspicious substance related to explosives, besides an Indian flag, and a copy of the Constitution was received through speed post at the Parliament House on September 16, 2022. The judge said that the letter from Samrite, a former MLA from Lanji in Balaghat, threatening to blow up the Parliament building, constituted a threat to cause destruction of property by fire, thereby rendering him liable for conviction under Part II of section 506 of IPC. The judge, however, acquitted Samrite of the charge under Explosives Act, after noting that the substance in question did not constitute an "explosive" under the Act. Samrite was represented by advocate Manish Kumar Choudhary. The court in December 2022 granted bail to the accused noting that the threat to blow off Parliament did not result in any kind of explosion or loss to life or property. The parcel also had a 10page signed complaint of Samrite, from which it was made out that he was showing dissatisfaction with the policies of the ruling government and made 70 different demands with a threat to blow off Parliament House on September 30, 2022 if his demands were not fulfilled. During the investigation, it also came to light that the accused has sent a similar parcel to the Supreme Court on September 19, 2022 and a separate FIR was lodged in that regard.
