The New Audi RS5 Sounds Pretty Darn Good

The New Audi RS5 Sounds Pretty Darn Good

Motor 106-05-2025
In the age of downsizing, Audi appears to be bucking the trend with its next-generation RS5. Prototypes of the hot sedan (technically a five-door liftback) and wagon were spotted at the Nürburgring, making sweet engine noise. The sound we hear definitely comes from something with more than four cylinders. Our money is on a V-6, likely a plug-in hybrid to comply with stricter emissions regulations.
Audi has pledged never to produce a four-cylinder RS car, so it's not surprising that the next RS5 could retain all six cylinders. We haven't forgotten about the five-cylinder unit, but the 2.5-liter TFSI is now basically confined to the RS3, as the TT RS is long gone and the RS Q3 is unlikely to return with the inline-five. In September 2019, Audi promised that the RS4 Avant successor would come with an
electrified six-cylinder powertrain
.
The new RS5 models are clad in swirly camouflage but don't hide the fat oval exhaust tips, which now sit closer together, giving off Porsche vibes. The two exhausts are very much real, with Audi having pledged to
stop fitting fake exhausts
on its cars, not that RS models were ever guilty of that anyway. While I generally think bigger is better, these ovals might be just a tad too large. Feel free to disagree.
Elsewhere, the RS5 duo sports larger air intakes and bulging fenders, with the front ones appearing to have big (and hopefully functional) vertical vents to cool the brakes or for aerodynamic purposes. Large wheels with low-profile tires fill the arches nicely, and
Audi
has added a small spoiler at the rear of the not-a-sedan.
If you're concerned about the new RS5 gaining weight, so are we. The outgoing RS4 Avant tipped the scales at 1,745 kilograms in Europe, or 3,847 pounds. Keeping the six-cylinder setup while adding a battery and electric motor could push the super wagon above 2,000 kilograms, around 4,409 pounds. On the plus side, it's bound to offer more power than the
RS4 Edition 25 Years
, which had 464 hp and 443 lb-ft (600 Nm) of torque.

But this spy video isn't just about the new RS5. The larger, next-gen RS6 Avant also appears, sporting similarly positioned oval exhausts, now closer to the center of the rear bumper. It has even wider fenders and sounds aggressive as well. It's unclear if the new
RS6
will also go the plug-in hybrid route, but it's a strong possibility given how a V-8-only setup might struggle under Europe's tightening emissions rules.
Ex-Audi design boss Marc Lichte has said these cars will represent the 'last-generation RS ICE models,' adding that the next RS5 and RS6 will be
'mind-blowing.'
We're here for it. The regular A6 has just been revealed, so the RS6 will have to wait, especially since the new S6 has yet to break cover. Audi might debut the new RS5 before the end of the year or sometime in 2026.

Porsche Unveils New 911 Cup And GT3 R For Motorsport Duty

Porsche recently unveiled two cars that are a cornerstone of its racing efforts: The new 992.2-generation 911 Cup and revised GT3 R. The former is part of the brand's one-make series that runs in North America, Germany, and Asia, whereas the latter sees duty in global FIA GT3-class competition. In the USA, this most prominently takes the form of the IMSA Weathertech SportsCar Championship and SRO GT World Challenge America. Both race cars largely mimic their predecessors, yet, with some key changes to suspension and aerodynamics. Over 5,000 Cup Cars Built Since 1990 Built alongside road-going 911s at Porsche's Zuffenhausen, Germany facility, the current 992.1-generation 911 Cup has been in service since 2020 and totals 1,130 units. But now, with the 992.2 revision that debuted earlier this year, the new Cup will now be upgraded to reflect changes to its exterior. Additionally, some race-ready function is built into its bodywork. The front spoiler lip—acting as a key source of downforce—is now made up of three separate parts, which means easier and less-costly replacement after on-track contact. Similarly, the Cup loses the road-going version's daytime running lights, as, in the event of a collision, there's less threat to the Cup's radiator system. Plus, one less component to replace means less money spent by teams during repair. Additionally, a less-expensive carbon fiber fleece now comprises several rear body parts, which should be easier on teams' finances, too. The front fenders now feature louver vents and revised underbody aerodynamic engineering to improve overall precision on track, especially at high speed. Then, the rear spoiler has been revised for easier adjustment. In terms of power output, the naturally aspirated, 4.0-liter flat-six beneath every Cup car now produces 512 horsepower. Reigning it in is a revised braking package, with wider and larger brake discs up front with optimized ducting to improve cooling. Suffice to say, this will be the most capable, confident, and lively Cup car generation ever built since the series debuted 35 years ago. GT3 Brawler The current Porsche 911 GT3 R debuted in 2023 and has been no stranger to podiums around the globe. Last year, AO Racing's iconic Rexy GTD Pro entry claimed the season championship, and GT3 Rs claimed six wins in eight events in Germany's own Nürburgring Langstrecken-Serie (NLS). Now, a new revised R is set to debut in grids for the 2026 season. While upgrades are minimal, they'll ensure competitiveness up against other GT3-class contenders from Aston Martin, Mercedes-AMG, BMW, and more, for years to come. They're largely focused on front-end aero and suspension by way of revised fender louvers and re-engineering kinematics in its double-wishbone suspension. These louvers 'help to counteract front-end compression during deceleration, thereby maintaining aerodynamic balance. This reduces the tendency of the car to tilt forward during braking, also known as pitch sensitivity. As a result, the new 911 GT3 R offers more precise and predictable braking behavior, improving overall control,' Porsche Motorsport states in its official press release. Improved durability and reliability has been the focus of the new GT3 R, too. The electrohydraulic power steering system features upgraded cooling, and new ceramic wheel bearings are fitted to improve overall robustness dealing with sustained duty on circuits around the globe. Several add-ons are now standard equipment, too, making it easier for teams to adhere to different series' rulebooks. Finally, the GT3 R's mighty 4.2-liter flat-six engine produces as much as 557 horsepower, though, adjusting this figure based on series' balance-of-performance rules will be easy to achieve. As the 992-generation has been out for some time, Porsche states that it will offer upgrade packages to bring pre-2026 911 GT3 Rs up to this current specification.

Ford recalls 312K vehicles for loss of power brake assist

This story was originally published on Automotive Dive. To receive daily news and insights, subscribe to our free daily Automotive Dive newsletter. Dive Brief: Ford Motor Co. has recalled 312,000 pickup and SUV models for a loss of electronic power brake assist that can extend stopping distances and increase the risk of a crash, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The recalled vehicles include the 2025 F-150, Ranger, Expedition, Bronco and Lincoln Navigator models built between November 2023 and June 2025. An estimated 1% of the recalled vehicles are suspected of having the defect. Ford is issuing an over-the-air software update to address the problem, but customers will have the option to schedule a service appointment at a dealer to have it performed, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed on Aug. 25. Dive Insight: Ford discovered the problem on May 14 after its Expedition/Navigator Rapid Response Team identified a vehicle that exhibited a loss of power brake assist and stored a diagnostic trouble code (DTC). The incident occurred on a management lease program vehicle, which offers lease deals to Ford employees. Switch Auto Insurance and Save Today! Affordable Auto Insurance, Customized for You The Insurance Savings You Expect Great Rates and Award-Winning Service From May through June, Ford used its connected vehicle database to identify other models with the stored DTC believed to be related to the brake issue. Investigators also reviewed vehicle data logs and met with drivers that experienced a sudden loss of power brake assist, excessive pedal travel or longer stopping distances in order to determine the scope of the problem. Ford investigators concluded that the electronic brake booster (EBB) module may malfunction while driving or when the driver is using an advanced driver assist system feature. The majority of the recalled vehicles (218,000) are F-150 models. An EBB replaces a vehicle's traditional vacuum-operated brake booster with an electric motor to provide braking assist. These systems offer more precise stopping control and are also used in electric vehicles without a vacuum source. According to the recall report, the EBB module is susceptible to changes in voltage that can lead to a momentary current spike exceeding the unit's over-current monitoring threshold. The problem leads to the EBB motor shutting down and a loss of power brake assist. The units were sourced from Tier 1 supplier Bosch. As of July 11, 2025, Ford is aware of 37 warranty claims related to a loss of brake assist received between March 13 and June 26, including one alleged low-speed crash. However, the automaker is not aware of any injuries. Ford's Field Review Committee approved the recall on July 18. The revised EBB module software, which Ford expects will be available by the end of the month, will correct the unit's response to voltage changes and ensure that it remains operational if any variations occur. According to the recall report, small changes in EBB voltage are considered to be normal, but happen infrequently. Ford has issued 96 recalls since the start of 2025 for a host of vehicle problems, which is the highest number for any automaker in a single year, according to NHTSA data. The recalls potentially extend to over 6.4 million vehicles. 374-Foot-Long COSMOS Launches A New Era Of Superyacht Design And Construction

As a writer, my goal is to simply capture the essence of each new superyacht that gets launched by sharing my feelings, opinions, and observations and insider knowledge too so you all can get a better understanding of just how much work, passion, money, time and artistry goes into each new superyacht that gets launched. But, when it comes to capturing the essence of where the future of superyacht design can go, my words might pale in comparison to the images of the 374-foot-long COSMOS that Lürssen just launched in Germany. In fact, Lürssen Group CEO Peter Lürssen is probably better at describing COSMOS than I am too. 'This is a rather special project to coincide with our 150th anniversary,' he says. 'While it is true that as a custom shipyard, no two yachts that leave our halls are ever the same, there are some that leave an indelible mark on our history – COSMOS is undoubtedly one of those yachts.' And thanks to COSMOS's courageous and visionary owner's desire to create something truly unique, her inspired architectural and interior design by Marc Newson has already set a new benchmark when it comes to superyacht design and construction. Marc Newson brought a fresh and daring perspective to the design that's culminated in a sleek, sculptural and futuristic superyacht that's unlike anything else. 'Working with an immensely creative client has enabled rare opportunities to push the boundaries,' Marc Newson comments. 'Everything from the smallest detail to the silhouette – outside, inside, and everything in between – is our design. We have, therefore, been able to exploit and explore every creative possibility uninhibited. This liberating free rein afforded the project a joyful, organic evolution, one which resulted in a satisfying novelty and coherence, the aesthetic of which remains very much within our lexicon.' One of the features that made me say 'Wow' to myself when I first saw COSMOS's glass-domed owner's study. The study is quite feat of glass engineering developed by Lürssen that required them to bend large sections of thick glass, free of imperfections and with crystal clarity, to create the 360-degree panoramic views from atop the yacht. The glass theme is maybe even more noticeable on the cabin deck, where a continuous glass band surrounds the entire upper level of the yacht. The glass-encased observation lounge located forward in the bow beneath the helipad is an innovatively distinctive design flex. While the open aft deck seamlessly blends the luxury of a swimming pool and Jacuzzi with lots of comfortable space for sunbathing. Since COSMOS is also engineered for long-range, remote cruising the hull is reinforced to Ice Class 1D, enabling safe operation in light ice conditions. The owner is also committed to innovation, so COSMOS is also going to be used to a research installation of a methanol fuel cell that uses methanol to produce hydrogen, which is then converted into electricity. I told you a picture is worth a 1,000 words, right? Well, in the case of COSMOS, yes. But, not necessarily when it comes to an in-depth interview with Lürssen Group CEO Peter Lürssen. Stay tuned to read my upcoming 'Superyacht Influencer Interview' with him soon.
