Here's a list of South Bend area farmers markets that could keep you busy all summer
Fresh produce, meats, sweets, plants, flowers and crafts are just a few of the items that attract visitors to farmers markets throughout the South Bend region.
But in reality, shoppers are just as attracted by the ability to socialize ― to interact with others without being judged for invading another person's space. That's not so common in a regular grocery store or retail environment.
"It about community," says David White, owner of The Great British Treat House at the South Bend Farmer's Market, which celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2024.
"Most shopping experiences are very sterile," he says. "People come to markets to socialize and support small local businesses."
Those sentiments were echoed by Sue Bucholtz and Pamela Carl, who ran into each other at the Farmer's Market on Tuesday while stopping by the British Treat House.
"I come to talk to people like David (White) but also to learn and shop local," Bucholtz says. "Where else can you ask about ingredients or talk to the producer."
It's learning, interacting, buying fresh and supporting local, most agree.
The openness to explore is what attracted Lacquisha Hunt to begin selling various Irish Sea Moss products to those interested in getting rid of aches and pains or just learning that sea moss has its devotees.

Fort Erie Reports On-Track Wagering Up 23 Percent Opening Day
Fort Erie Reports On-Track Wagering Up 23 Percent Opening Day originally appeared on Paulick Report. Opening Day at Fort Erie Race Track in Ontario was a galloping success on Tuesday evening thanks to a combination of perfect weather, a roaring crowd, and eight exciting races. The highlight of the evening was undoubtedly the Summer Solstice Cup, which featured a packed field of 11 Thoroughbreds hitting the historic dirt oval. Riding atop Ruby's Ghost, jockey Melanie Pinto had her work cut out for her after drawing the 11th post in the gate, but a late burst with an eighth of a mile left sent her charging up from third place and into the lead at the finish line. 'I was a little concerned about being in the 11 post because I knew we would be pretty far out and I wasn't sure how to set up the speed to get to the inside, or if we were going to get stuck out,' said Pinto after the ride. 'But luckily we broke clean, had a really good trip, and it all worked out.' Advertisement The connections of Pinto, owner Charles Fipke, and trainer Michaela Neubauer have been a longtime winning trio at Fort Erie. Having been together for so many years, Pinto said they feel like a family. 'Definitely,' agreed Neubauer. 'Melanie is like my little sister.' The fulsome racing fields attracted plenty of bettors to the wagering windows at the track, with on-track wagering hitting $112,000 for the day, an increase of 23 per cent over last year. Including remote wagering, Opening Day at Fort Erie Race Track reached a handle of $1.7 million. That's a decline from last year's $1.8 million (according to Equibase charts), which was achieved despite canceling the final race on the opening day card due to weather in 2024. Live racing continues through June at Fort Erie, including the track's busiest day of the year, Father's Day, on June 15, where two more cup races will be on the card, alongside a Farmer's Market. It's the track's first Sunday card, which means horses will be hitting the dirt at a special 12:15 p.m. post time. For a full list of the track's race dates and post times, visit This story was originally reported by Paulick Report on May 28, 2025, where it first appeared.

Canadian sculptors create tariff carve-out
SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO) — Crews have begun installing some of the new sculptures that will be featured in this year's SculptureWalk display in downtown Sioux Falls. This year's exhibit features 80 sculptures including a piece by an artist from Canada, who says sheer luck prevented him from having to pay a tariff on his work. Falls Park Farmer's Market returns with winter plans 'Darn windy here, aye?' Artists like Peter Vogelaar of British Columbia face a whirlwind of paperwork in bringing their sculptures into the United States. 'It's actually more complicated than you believe. I have to deal with normally a broker in Canada to handle the border crossing,' Vogelaar said. Vogelaar says the process has been further complicated by tariffs imposed on Canadian products coming into the United States, including his artwork. 'This year, if I brought my piece directly from Canada, I would have had to pay a duty of 25-percent. Luckily, the piece I got accepted this year is already in the U.S., so I'm just going to move it around,' Vogelaar said. Vogelaar's piece for this year's SculptureWalk is currently in Mankato, Minnesota. He'll deliver it to Sioux Falls on Saturday. SculptureWalk organizers say they doubt that tariffs will have a chilling effect on artists who want to bring their work here to be displayed. 'I know one of the other artists from Canada shipped a piece up here from Texas. It was on display in Texas, so it came up here so they avoid the tariffs and all of those kind of things. But, the artists are resilient and SculptureWalk is resilient, so we're just finding ways around some of these issues as they pop up,' SculptureWalk board member Jim Mathis said. Vogelaar says he might not have brought his work to Sioux Falls if he had to pay a tariff. He says SculptureWalk is a valuable point of entry for international artists in getting their works exposed to art lovers everywhere. Even though the SculptureWalk pieces are here for show, Vogelaar says they can be subject to tariffs because of the potential of them being sold in the United States.
