Like Succession meets Spinal Tap: how Britain's best record label collapsed

Early in 2008 Mick Jagger had lunch with the City mogul Guy Hands, the new owner of the Rolling Stones' record label, EMI. The Stones' contract was up and Hands presented the band's frontman with a PowerPoint of innovative ideas to retain the biggest rock band in the world. It included a Rolling Stones-themed board game, a Rolling Stones Guitar Hero video game and a reality TV show called Stones Idol. Hands suggested that Mick and Keith would host their own wild version of The X Factor, judging clueless wannabe rock stars. The best part? Contestants would stay in a Rolling Stones-themed hotel, complete with pre-trashed rooms.
Recollections differ about what happened next. Hands insists the meeting ended cordially, while an EMI staffer claims that Jagger went to the loo and never came back. What isn't in doubt is that the Stones ditched EMI shortly afterwards and signed with its arch-rival Universal, one of a slew of mega-artists to abandon EMI shortly after Hands's takeover in 2007.

A couple of years later the entire company collapsed. My new BBC podcast, Music, Money and Mayhem, exposes the carnage that unfolded when the City suits seized Britain's most successful record label and faced an uprising of furious artists. I've interviewed Hands, several household name musicians and more than a dozen former executives, who spill the beans on a saga that feels like Succession meets Spinal Tap. It's a cautionary tale of money versus art, which reveals why one of the UK's most prized cultural jewels exploded for ever.
Johnny Marr viewed EMI as the Buckingham Palace of record companies, and for decades it had been the label that every band wanted to join. It was behind the Beatles, Queen, Pink Floyd, David Bowie and Duran Duran, and in the 1990s EMI rode the Britpop wave with Blur, then took on the world with Radiohead, Coldplay and Robbie Williams. Meanwhile, the CD boom enabled the company toresell its classic albums to fans all over again, generating an avalanche of cash. This colossal windfall fuelled a bacchanalian corporate decadence, from the infamous 'fruit and flowers' budgets (a euphemism for company spend on alcohol and drugs) to the notorious 'sex lift' in Virgin's head office, stuffed with poppers and dildos.
But at the turn of the millennium the music suddenly stopped, as the emerging internet ravaged the record business. I was one of millions of fans who stopped buying CDs and instead downloaded tracks for free on illicit file-sharing services such as Napster. By 2007 EMI was facing oblivion and was saved at the eleventh hour by a private equity firm, Terra Firma, which bought the company outright. Its owner was Hands, widely viewed as a ruthless City financier with a reputation for slashing costs and brutal restructuring. He had no experience in the music business, having previously made millions turning around German service stations by upgrading their toilets. His surprise takeover set off alarm bells with EMI's nervous artists.
'It was a bit like when the Khmer Rouge took over Phnom Penh,' Neil Tennant from the Pet Shop Boys says. 'Everyone thinks, well, at least the war's over … And then a few days later the massacre starts.'
Hands immediately installed himself as EMI's chief executive, which was a bold move given he had never run a record company before. Even more surprisingly, he had no auditory memory. 'Every time I hear music I'm effectively hearing it for the first time,' he admits. He had just bought the most valuable songs in the world, from Penny Lane to Bohemian Rhapsody, and couldn't remember a note.
'I was coming in there with a very hard-nosed view about where we were going to make money,' says Hands, who set about monetising the company's huge back catalogue. This led to EMI's biggest names being pitched some very bizarre ideas, including a novelty Coldplay toothbrush that played Yellow as it brushed. Another brainwave was for the famously anti-consumerist band Radiohead to do a marketing tie-in with the bland department store Next.

This was merely a skirmish in the bitter feud that unfolded between Hands and Radiohead, which has been exclusively revealed to us by their guitarist Ed O'Brien. Radiohead had enjoyed a hugely successful partnership with EMI for more than 15 years, during which they released the seminal Nineties albums The Bends and OK Computer, but by the mid-Noughties their contract was up. O'Brien recalls the City takeover as their 'biggest nightmare' as Hands epitomised the financial system that their music railed against: 'We're interested in the dark side of global capitalism, and this is part of it.'
Hostilities were inflamed by Hands' unshakeable belief that bands should be viewed as brands.'Brands is like the dirtiest word for artists,' O'Brien says. 'We're not a f***ing brand. Those financial guys, they just don't get it.'
The EMI brass remained hopeful that they could still release Radiohead's next album, but in October 2007 the band ambushed their corporate owners and released In Rainbows free online, asking fans to pay whatever they felt it was worth. It set off a bomb across the music business as it completely bypassed their record label and delivered a massive two fingers up to Hands. He retaliated by releasing an unauthorised box set of their studio albums in December, leading Radiohead's singer Thom Yorke to sulk to Word magazine that it 'f***ing ruined his Christmas'.
It was soon open warfare between the City suits and EMI's artists, as Queen followed Radiohead out the door after negotiations with Terra Firma executives collapsed. Robbie Williams's manager lambasted Hands in The Times as a 'plantation owner'.
The spat followed the catastrophic sales of Williams's Rudebox album, and Hands revealed that the unsold CDs ended up getting crushed and used for surfacing roads in China. Joss Stone was told that her £12 million advance was being slashed to the bone, leading to a tearful confrontation in Hands's executive office. Hands remained unmoved, so Stone's dog, Dusty Springfield, performed a dirty protest on his carpet. 'I'd like to think it was accidental, but if it was deliberate, more power toher,' he says ruefully.

Lily Allen spotted Hands in the audience at one of her concerts and changed the lyrics to F*** You to 'f*** you, EMI!' in his honour. Hands had never been in the spotlight and became overwhelmed with stress. 'I couldn't go into a restaurant in London without someone coming up to me and wanting to talk to me about EMI. My kids were finding it difficult because all their friends would do was talk about your dad and EMI.' He suffered panic attacks, became a recluse and describes himself as an 'unkempt-hair, overweight, burger-eating monster'.
But lurking in the shadows was a darker danger than hectoring pop stars. Hands had bet the farm on EMI and borrowed billions from Citigroup on an astonishingly thin contract. 'Frankly, I can find more information on a fag packet than was in that document,' he says. The financial crash had decimated the financial markets and the investment bank wanted its money back. Against all the odds, Hands returned EMI to profit in 2009 but it wasn't enough to save the label. The bank foreclosed in 2011 and EMI was broken up and sold off for parts.
Hands looks back on these as the darkest days of his life: 'I wasn't really relieved. I just wanted to go to sleep for as long as possible and frankly not wake up again.' Hands stepped down from Terra Firma in 2023 and now lives in Guernsey.
It was the biggest financial disaster in the history of British music but it would be unfair to tar Hands as a corporate vandal who destroyed a golden goose. Tacky toothbrushes aside, some of his reforms were years ahead of their time. He introduced a revolution in market insights, which was fiercely resisted by the EMI old guard at the time but has now been adopted across the music business. Handsembraced digital distribution and even invested in a start-up called Spotify.
He lost everything when EMI collapsed, but if he had clung on to the company until the market in recorded music rebounded (as it did later in the 2010s), he would have made billions.
It would also be wrong to paint EMI executives in the 2000s as coke-guzzling soaks who ran the label into the ground. The internet capsized the entire music industry at that time, and EMI only fell further because it was a standalone company, unlike Sony and Universal. EMI had cultivated 'magic ears' in its A&R department who had a golden touch for finding the best British artists, starting with four plucky lads from Liverpool in 1962. It's 1pm on a gloriously sunny Friday and it appears that most of Britain has downed tools and headed to the Farmer's Dog in west Oxfordshire. Children in pushchairs compete for space on the narrow footpaths with hairy bikers and young couples holding hands. 'Goodness me,' says one elderly man navigating the crowds while carrying 12 bottles of Hawkstone lager that he's just bought from the shop in the pub garden. Jeremy Clarkson owns the pub and is Hawkstone's largest shareholder. He also owns a nearby farm, Diddly Squat, and all three feature prominently in his Amazon TV series, Clarkson's Farm. Hence the crowds today. The former Top Gear presenter arrives in good spirits via the staff entrance and pops up the back stairs to an area known as the Farmers' Clubhouse, where Owen Jenkins, the managing director of Hawkstone, and Johnny Hornby, Clarkson's fellow shareholder in the brewery, a friend and a marketing whizz, are waiting. Hornby pours three and a half pints of Bounder, the latest Hawkstone brew. It's a 4.2 per cent Helles golden lager and it tastes wonderfully crisp on a hot day. • Explore the Sunday Times 100 — interviews, company profiles and more The question is: will Clarkson enjoy it too? He's on Mounjaro, the weight-loss drug, and is looking better for it. It has put him off snacking. His approach to a pint, though, is altogether more determined: 'You have to fight it. Don't give in,' he urges Hornby, who is also injecting and is the one sitting with the half pint. Clarkson says he pictures the Danish scientist [Lotte Bjerre Knudsen] whose research led to the development of injectable weight-loss drugs in this battle of wits. 'It's not just enjoying the pint. It's the fact I've beaten [her],' he adds gleefully. He takes a guilt-free glug of Bounder. 'Oh, this is so good. Jaguar should be marketing this as Jags are for bounders — Terry-Thomas,' he adds, referring to the character actor and setting the tone for the interview. Ably assisted by his Bounder, Clarkson tackles the perception that he's really only lent his name to Hawkstone; that it's neither something he is passionate about, nor any good. 'Some people assume it is a Ryan Reynolds-backed, Kylie Minogue-backed liquid. There is a polite look on their faces and they think, I'll take a swig and say 'well done', in a patronising way. But there is always this moment where they go, 'Actually, that is f***ing good.'' Ploughing on, he suggests Minogue's wine may not be a winner. 'You buy Kylie's rosé because you are a Kylie fan — you have it once and then go back to proper rosé. With Hawkstone, it is demonstrably better than anything from Italy, Germany, Spain or America.' The recently knighted David Beckham gets it in the neck next. 'I'm going to betray a loyalty here. This is from David,' he says, reading out an exchange on a messaging app. 'I said congratulations [on Beckham's selection to guest edit Country Life magazine] and he replied, 'Thanks for your message; not official yet, but if it happens I'll have a nice pint of Stella.'' Clarkson pauses for effect, raising a bushy eyebrow. 'You had better f***ing not' was his straightforward reply, before adding his punchline: 'If he is going to drink anything that's not Hawkstone, it should be Beck's.' Hornby joins in. 'Is he Belgian? If he is, then that's fine. Does he come from a long line of Belgian farmers that he's trying to help? If so, that is completely noble.' The glasses are now half empty, but the laughing is getting louder. Having put Beckham and Minogue in their place, Clarkson turns to Hawkstone, the Cotswold brewery in which he acquired his stake in 2021. 'It's the grown-up element of the whole operation,' he says. 'You have the farm shop, the pub and TV show, which are all entertainment. Hawkstone is grown-up as I have to go to board meetings where people talk in a foreign language. We don't even drink in board meetings, we are so busy using acronyms. 'In Q1 with the Ebitda running at 15 and YoY growth of …' YoY do I go to board meetings?' he asks. Later he makes clear that the Farmer's Dog, which now employs 146 people, will be his last 'business'. 'I'm done with business now. I am not starting another business as long as I live. I don't understand it and am not motivated by money. I just want a good craic.' The Bounder we are drinking is a spring special made with experimental hops grown in Britain. Hornby says they hope the demand Hawkstone is creating will help to turn around the industry's fortunes: 'The British hops industry has been in steady decline, but the amount we have now started to do with British hops could add 30 per cent to the size of the industry next year,' he says. The 'grown in Britain' bit is important to them all. Four of the eight beers and ciders on tap at the Farmer's Dog are made from '100 per cent British' ingredients, Hornby says. Clarkson adds: 'Hopefully, everybody benefits from Hawkstone, the Farmer's Dog and Diddly Squat. Whether you are growing black pepper in Cornwall or barley in Scotland, it is all backing British farming. We were stuck on hops, but if we can say to the hop growers of Britain that we have enough demand to make it worth your while expanding your hops business, then that would make me incredibly happy.' Hawkstone is now available in 2,000 pubs, up from 500 last summer, and is also stocked in Waitrose, Morrisons, Sainsbury's, Ocado and Majestic Wine. Of the larger pub groups, Young's is trialling it at 30 of its pubs: Simon Dodd, the chief executive, made a point of highlighting it as one of its most exciting new beers, alongside fruit-beer maker Jubel, which is also on this year's Sunday Times 100 (No 47). • The Clarkson's Farm effect: convincing us to buy British produce Hawkstone's sales almost tripled from £7.8 million in 2024 to £21.3 million in the year to this March. The plan for the rest of 2025? 'Sell tons of beer and put Peroni out of business,' Clarkson replies. 'I want the Peroni board saying, 'What the hell has gone wrong? We're selling nothing in the UK.' I want total domination of the British lager market.' He'll allow Carling to continue, an admission that Hawkstone is at the top end of beer pricing — a few pubs have delisted Hawkstone because it is more expensive than other options. To cope with demand, Hawkstone works with partners such as the Glasgow-based Wellpark, home to Tennent's and part of C&C Group, where its Hawkstone Premium lager is brewed. The Herefordshire-based Weston family, makers of Henry Westons Cider and Stowford Press, produce the Hawkstone ciders, which are endorsed by Kaleb Cooper, Clarkson's co-star on Clarkson's Farm. A small Oxfordshire distillery, Wood Brothers, makes Hawkstone gin and vodka. Meanwhile, Clarkson's farm, Diddly Squat, will host a massive event next June, Clarkson says, providing another opportunity to flog more Hawkstone. 'We are hosting Cereals, which will be enormous.' I query what it is. 'I'd never heard of it either, but it's a trade [event] for 25,000, 30,000 farmers. It is usually in Cambridgeshire [it was actually held in Lincolnshire this year], and they go to a farm and they look at wheat and talk about fertiliser. It's coming to Diddly Squat next year.' And then he gets to the point of the story. 'Kaleb is panicking. If every farmer in the country comes and he has done all the farming, they'll be checking his work.' Clarkson then becomes more thoughtful. He's been pondering the role of pubs in towns and villages, given the rate of attrition in recent years. 'It's been playing on my mind,' he begins. 'If you no longer have a village doctor, policeman, school, shop, vicar and if you lose the pub, then what is a village? It is just a collection of houses.' He has a campaign in mind, and already has a slogan: 'Go to your local pub on your way home from work.' His idea is that people can reconnect and perhaps even disconnect, for a moment, from the rush of modern life. It might even make people happier. 'Just have a pint, a chat with someone. It is a bit less time scrolling on social media, a bit less time sitting with your non-communicative children. Go and have a pint. It is a sensible and nice thing to do. It benefits the individual, the pub. Even in London. If you come out of the Tube station, don't go home. Stop off at the pub you walk past every night.' And off he goes into the sunshine, walking the boards of his own pub.

Except perhaps in Birmingham, where his memory is still cherished for what he did for the city's music, including co-founding the CBSO, Granville Bantock (1868-1946) has slipped quietly into the margins of 20th-century British music. But as well as being an academic and conductor, Bantock was a prolific composer, with a work list including four symphonies, five concertos and nine operas, of which the last, the 'Celtic folk opera' The Seal Woman, is easily the best remembered now. The premiere of The Seal Woman in 1924 was the Birmingham Repertory theatre's first production; librettist Marjory Kennedy-Fraser took the main role of the Cailleach, whose dreams and visions tell the story of the Selkie, seal-people who emerge from the sea every seven years to live on land, shedding their skins to take human form. Kennedy-Fraser's text is a patchwork of 24 folk songs that she collected in the Western Isles, and originally she intended it as a spoken drama. Even in the operatic version, the songs remain central; Bantock's music, for an instrumental ensemble of 16 players, tactfully wraps itself around the original melodies, never dominating, and preserving as much of the integrity of Kennedy-Fraser's accompaniments as possible. Dramatically, though, it remains inert. Although the original melodies and some of the texts as Kennedy-Fraser presents them have their own intrinsic beauty, The Seal Woman comes across as rather faded, dated and uninvolving. That's despite the best efforts of conductor John Andrews and a carefully assembled cast of singers, led by Yvonne Howard as the storytelling Cailleach and mezzo Catherine Carby as the Seal Woman herself. But it's the curiosity value of the score that recommends it above all.
