You've almost certainly heard that cliché about three things being true, two of which are death and taxes.

Besides high payrolls and early playoff exits, there's another truth about the New York Yankees: they don't make midseason coaching changes, at least not in the Brian Cashman era.
In fact, the Yankees never changed their coaching staff during the season from 1998 through 2022. Then came 2023, when the Yankees fired hitting coach Dillon Lawson amid a disappointing 82-80 campaign.
If the Yankees' recent offensive skid continues, the club may need to make a similar decision regarding hitting coach James Rowson.

In fairness to Rowson, he doesn't deserve the full blame for the Yankees' 10-11 June. However, the Yankees' June .719 OPS is considerably down from May's .792, and their .319 on-base percentage is disappointing, especially given the marquee names in their lineup.

Those poor stretches are usually what cost assistant coaches their jobs, though. Think about how many NFL teams dismiss a coordinator amid a four or five-game slump. MLB clubs often shake up their coaching staff, even if it's only replacing a base coach.
Sometimes, those changes work. Other times, it means nothing.
The Yankees need to decide if such a move would get the club back on track. It's telling that Joe Torre and Joe Girardi never replaced a coach during the season, and Boone waited until his sixth year to do so.
However, both managers had championships under their belt. Boone only has a single pennant in eight seasons, and the Yankees' AL East lead is down to one game. Who knows if it'd even be his decision to revamp his staff?

Duke Basketball Gets Good Recruiting News on Monday

Duke Basketball Gets Good Recruiting News on Monday originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The college basketball season will be here before you know it. Sure, football season comes first, but it won't be long before gym floors are squeaking again and hoops fans get their fix. Advertisement One thing that never stops is the recruitment process. Top programs across the country are now focused on the class of 2026. These rising seniors are heading into a pivotal year as they prepare for their final high school season and start making decisions about where they'll play at the next level. Joe Tipton of On3 Sports shared the latest update on one of the top 2026 recruits, combo guard Austin Goosby. Goosby is drawing attention from several major programs, including Duke. "2026 Top-30 recruit Austin Goosby has scheduled official visits to Duke, Texas, Baylor, BYU, Miami, SMU, and UCLA, he tells @On3Recruits." Goosby, a 6-foot-5 four-star guard out of Melissa, Texas, received an offer from Duke head coach Jon Scheyer on June 17. His official visit schedule is packed, starting with SMU on July 28 and UCLA on July 30. In September, he'll head to Texas and Baylor before finishing the month with visits to Miami and BYU. His final stop is scheduled for Duke on Oct. 2. Advertisement Duke, led by Scheyer, is coming off a stellar 35-4 season. The Blue Devils went 19-1 in ACC play and reached the Final Four in the NCAA Tournament. They finished third in the final Associated Press poll. But with Scheyer's strong recruiting and Goosby's interest in the program, Duke continues to stay in the mix as a premier destination for top high school talent. Kansas, Bill Self Receive Major Recruiting News on Wednesday

Kansas, Bill Self Receive Major Recruiting News on Wednesday originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The college basketball recruiting cycle never really ends. As June winds down, players are still shifting schools while coaches continue shaping their rosters for the 2025-26 season. Advertisement Kansas head coach Bill Self got a boost on Wednesday, landing a key frontcourt addition who could make an impact in Big 12 play. The Jayhawks picked up Paul Mbiya, a 6-foot-11, 260-pound center with a 7-foot-7 wingspan. Mbiya adds size, depth and much-needed rim protection to a Kansas team with Final Four aspirations. Joe Tipton of On3 Sports broke the news: "Congolese big man Paul Mbiya, a former NC State signee, has committed to Kansas, source tells @On3Recruits. The 6-11, 260-pound 20-year-old center boasts a 7-7 wingspan." Mbiya hit the open market last week after decommitting from the NC State Wolfpack, where he had been pledged for just over a month. Kansas beat out Dana Altman and the Oregon Ducks for his services. Advertisement Mbiya began his development at the NBA Academy Africa before moving to France to play for ASVEL Villeurbanne, where he averaged 15.5 points and 11.6 rebounds per game. Kansas Jayhawks head coach Bill Self.© Christopher Creveling-Imagn Images He becomes the second major pickup for Kansas in as many days. The Jayhawks also added Kohl Rosario, bringing the scholarship count to 13 of the 14 available spots. Mbiya will likely compete with Flory Bidunga for minutes at the center position. His commitment likely ends Kansas' pursuit of fellow bigs Ege Demir and Brice Dessert. The Jayhawks are looking to bounce back after a frustrating 21-13 campaign, including an 11-9 mark in Big 12 play. Their season began with a No. 1 ranking in the Associated Press preseason poll and ended in disappointment with a first-round loss in the NCAA Tournament to John Calipari's Arkansas Razorbacks. Advertisement Kansas has reloaded and retooled. With Mbiya in the mix, they're once again aiming for a deep March run. Red Sox starting P Kutter Crawford needs likely season-ending surgery after undisclosed off-field 'accident'

Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Kutter Crawford's season is likely over before it started due to an undisclosed off-field "accident" that resulted in a wrist injury. Red Sox manager Alex Cora announced the injury to reporters Wednesday afternoon. Advertisement "Kutter's gonna have wrist surgery," Cora said. ... "It's one of those that — it sucks, right? Because we were talking about how deep we were in spring training and the options we had for the starting rotation. "Now it's getting thinner and thinner." Cora added that the surgery is "most likely" season-ending and that the injury wasn't baseball related. 'I'm not going to go into details, but this was an off-the-field injury,' Cora said, per MassLive. Cora emphasized that the injury wasn't a result of Crawford doing anything "irresponsible." Advertisement 'It's not disappointing. It's just an accident,' Cora said. "It just sucks that it happened this way. I'm not going to get into details, but it wasn't irresponsible.' Crawford was Boston's most durable starter Crawford, 29, is in his fifth MLB season, each of which he's played with the Red Sox. Crawford led the AL with 33 starts last season and led the Red Sox with 183 2/3 innings pitched. He produced a 4.36 ERA and 1.122 WHIP with 175 strikeouts and 55 walks. He also allowed an MLB-high 34 home runs. Crawford has not pitched this season. He started spring training sidelined with tendinosis in his right knee that plagued him throughout the 2024 season and began the season on the 60-day injured list. Advertisement Crawford threw batting-practice sessions in May and was slated for rehab assignments in June in his comeback from his knee injury. But the wrist injury has likely ended his season. Red Sox dealing with multiple pitching injuries The news is a further blow to an already shorthanded Red Sox rotation. Starters Tanner Houck and Hunter Dobbins are both on the 15-day injured list. Both are dealing with elbow strains. Per MassLive, Houck has made two rehab starts at Triple-A Worcester, and Dobbins is scheduled to throw a bullpen session over the upcoming weekend. The Red Sox entered Wednesday on a four-game losing streak in the aftermath of the controversial trade of slugger Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants. Boston lost two of those games to the Giants with Devers playing for San Francisco. The Red Sox are 40-41 and in fourth place in the AL East, six games behind the first place New York Yankees.
