You've almost certainly heard that cliché about three things being true, two of which are death and taxes.

Besides high payrolls and early playoff exits, there's another truth about the New York Yankees: they don't make midseason coaching changes, at least not in the Brian Cashman era.
In fact, the Yankees never changed their coaching staff during the season from 1998 through 2022. Then came 2023, when the Yankees fired hitting coach Dillon Lawson amid a disappointing 82-80 campaign.
If the Yankees' recent offensive skid continues, the club may need to make a similar decision regarding hitting coach James Rowson.

In fairness to Rowson, he doesn't deserve the full blame for the Yankees' 10-11 June. However, the Yankees' June .719 OPS is considerably down from May's .792, and their .319 on-base percentage is disappointing, especially given the marquee names in their lineup.

Those poor stretches are usually what cost assistant coaches their jobs, though. Think about how many NFL teams dismiss a coordinator amid a four or five-game slump. MLB clubs often shake up their coaching staff, even if it's only replacing a base coach.
Sometimes, those changes work. Other times, it means nothing.
The Yankees need to decide if such a move would get the club back on track. It's telling that Joe Torre and Joe Girardi never replaced a coach during the season, and Boone waited until his sixth year to do so.
However, both managers had championships under their belt. Boone only has a single pennant in eight seasons, and the Yankees' AL East lead is down to one game. Who knows if it'd even be his decision to revamp his staff?

Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Kutter Crawford's season is likely over before it started due to an undisclosed off-field "accident" that resulted in a wrist injury. Red Sox manager Alex Cora announced the injury to reporters Wednesday afternoon. Advertisement "Kutter's gonna have wrist surgery," Cora said. ... "It's one of those that — it sucks, right? Because we were talking about how deep we were in spring training and the options we had for the starting rotation. "Now it's getting thinner and thinner." 'I'm not going to go into details, but this was an off-the-field injury,' Cora said, per MassLive. Cora emphasized that the injury wasn't a result of Crawford doing anything "irresponsible." Crawford was Boston's most durable starter Crawford, 29, is in his fifth MLB season, each of which he's played with the Red Sox. Crawford led the AL with 33 starts last season and led the Red Sox with 183 2/3 innings pitched. He produced a 4.36 ERA and 1.122 WHIP with 175 strikeouts and 55 walks. He also allowed an MLB-high 34 home runs. Crawford has not pitched this season. He started spring training sidelined with tendinosis in his right knee that plagued him throughout the 2024 season and began the season on the 60-day injured list. Advertisement Crawford threw batting-practice sessions in May and was slated for rehab assignments in June in his comeback from his knee injury. But the wrist injury has likely ended his season. Red Sox dealing with multiple pitching injuries The news is a further blow to an already shorthanded Red Sox rotation. Starters Tanner Houck and Hunter Dobbins are both on the 15-day injured list. Both are dealing with elbow strains. Per MassLive, Houck has made two rehab starts at Triple-A Worcester, and Dobbins is scheduled to throw a bullpen session over the upcoming weekend. The Red Sox entered Wednesday on a four-game losing streak in the aftermath of the controversial trade of slugger Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants. Boston lost two of those games to the Giants with Devers playing for San Francisco. The Red Sox are 40-41 and in fourth place in the AL East, six games behind the first place New York Yankees.
