Anu Aggarwal Says, "Bollywood Was Ruled By People Like Dawood Ibrahim" During '90s
Aashiqui actor Anu Aggarwal has revealed about Bollywood's unholy nexus with the underworld during the '90s in her recent interview with Pinkvilla. "It was a dirty business. I don't know how dirty it is today," Anu said as she revealed how many films were funded by the underworld at that time.
Speaking to Pinkvilla, she said, "At that time, it was all under-the-table deals. It was ruled by people like Dawood Ibrahim. All the money that was coming into the film industry came from the underworld. It was a completely different scenario."
During the same conversation, she also revealed that she still hasn't been paid her full remuneration for Aashiqui. "I haven't gotten the full fees for Aashiqui till today. I've only been paid 60% of the full fees. They still owe me the 40%," the actor alleged.
A few days ago, Anu Aggarwal hit the headlines as she claimed she drank her urine.
In an interaction with Instant Bollywood, Anu Aggarwal said, "Many people don't know this... whether it's ignorance or just a lack of awareness, but drinking urine, which is referred to as Aamroli, is actually a mudra (gesture/practice) in Yoga. I've practiced it myself. I have tried it, and it's a very important practice. But one crucial thing to remember is that you don't drink the entire urine. Only a specific part of it is consumed... After Aashiqui, Anu appeared in films like Ghazab Tamasha, King Uncle, Ram Shastra, and more.
Her last film was Return of Jewel Thief (1996). In 1999, she met with a serious accident that left her in a coma for 29 days. Following the accident, Anu never returned to acting.

The once-dominant action genre was slowly losing its sheen, and viewers were looking for something fresh. In the middle of this transition came a film that not only revived the romance-musical format but also rewrote box office history. Released in 1990, Mahesh Bhatt's Aashiqui ran uninterrupted in theatres for 52 weeks, becoming a cultural milestone that still defines an era of Bollywood. Produced by music baron Gulshan Kumar of T-Series and filmmaker Mukesh Bhatt, the film marked a turning point for everyone involved. The soundtrack by composer duo Nadeem-Shravan, with lyrics penned by Sameer, turned into a nationwide sensation. Almost every song became an anthem for young love. Kumar Sanu, who lent his voice to the majority of tracks, shot to stardom overnight, as did the film's lead pair Rahul Roy and Anu Agarwal. Director Mahesh Bhatt has often recalled how the project took shape. Speaking in an interview with Radio Nasha, he revealed that Aashiqui was inspired in part by his own early love story with his first wife, Kiran Bhatt. He also described his first meeting with Gulshan Kumar, then a relatively new name in Mumbai's music industry. 'I was busy shooting a film when I noticed a man greeting me from afar with folded hands," Bhatt recalled, 'He had an innocent face. I was told he was Gulshan Kumar, the owner of T-Series. At that time, everyone in Mumbai knew HMV, but T-Series was still trying to get a foothold here. He came up to me and said respectfully, 'You are Mukesh Bhatt, right?' When I corrected him, we got talking." Bhatt said Gulshan Kumar told him he had dreamt of Lord Shiva, who instructed him to approach the filmmaker. 'He said, 'We already have the songs. You just record what you like. The music will be ours, but let's make a film together.' My brother Mukesh was unwell at the time, and we decided to go ahead with this collaboration. That's how Aashiqui was born," Bhatt said. The director remembers how Nadeem-Shravan and Sameer were at the peak of their creativity. 'Whenever I went to meet them, they would lock me in a room and sing a hundred songs," Bhatt said. Gulshan Kumar promised him something unusual for those days, that he would take the music into every home. He did so by aggressively marketing the album on Doordarshan even before the film's release. 'At one point, we feared the film might fail because everyone had already heard the songs. But when it hit theatres, history was created. The simplicity of the story, the emotional pull of the music, and the way it was marketed, everything just clicked," Bhatt said. The film's script was written by Robin Bhatt with inputs from Akash Khurana. Interestingly, actor Aditya Pancholi dubbed Rahul Roy's voice, while Kumar Sanu himself appeared in a cameo role. Rahul Roy's mother, Indira Roy, was acquainted with Mahesh Bhatt, which helped him land the role. The music, initially compiled under the album title Chahat, went on to sell millions of cassettes through T-Series, cementing the company's position as a music powerhouse. The film's logo, featuring lovers shielded under a coat, became an enduring symbol of Bollywood romance.
