CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Detectives are investigating after a man was fatally struck while riding a lawn mower at night in northwest Charlotte.
Police responded to reports of an accident with injuries near the 5700 block of Freedom Drive, on May 20 around 9 p.m.

‘Allowing us to give her love': Dog shot and killed in Medina
MEDINA, Ohio (WJW) — David and Deb Mast were in the living room of their Medina home early Friday afternoon when Deb said something outside caught her attention as it went around the side of their house. 'I just saw just the tail of it and I thought it was the neighbor's dog,' she told Fox 8. Deadly Ashtabula County shooting suspect taken into custody Her husband went to investigate 'It was kind of walking aimlessly along the back fence there at the back of our property and just limping along,' David said. 'It was just walking along the back, and we were yelling to it, and it acted like it wasn't hearing us, no response, not responding to us at all,' Deb said. 'I think her left leg in the back here rear leg, she wouldn't really put it down on the ground, like it was broken.' The couple said that despite her injuries, the dog was very friendly and allowed them to ease her onto a tarp. After several calls, they were able to contact the Medina County SPCA, which eagerly took the dog and transported it to a veterinarian, where it was learned she had been shot. Cleveland Heights retains outside counsel after refusing to release bodycam video 'They found out that the bullet that was in her leg, which was a small caliber firearm from a pistol, cracked the bone and also tore her ACL. There was also some testing done that showed other underlying things as well,' said Medina County SPCA Director Sarah Urquhart. 'She was still allowing us to pet her and give her love and compassion, unfortunately, due to the injuries that she sustained, she did have to be euthanized.' The dog was chipped and its owner was located about a half mile away from the Mast's home. They learned her name was Stella, a 13-year-old pit bull terrier, who had been adopted by her new family only about three months earlier. Urquhart said Stella broke free from her tether while she was outside to use the bathroom, and her owners had been looking for her for about 2-3 hours. The Masts said Stella appeared to be underweight and eagerly accepted food and water from them. Urquhart said that could be attributed to her age and some other underlying conditions. Kent State to close LGBTQ+, women's, multicultural centers There were additional concerning questions that made the animal warden want to investigate more into Stella's history before she was recently adopted. But what they really would like to determine is who is responsible for shooting the dog and why. 'It's surprising. I wouldn't have thought that was an injury that would happen in this area here, really,' David said. 'If anyone knows anything or heard anything on Friday, May 30, between 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. in that vicinity of Walnut and East Washington. If you heard anything, you think it was a gunshot, a firecracker, or saw anything suspicious, please contact our humane officer here at the shelter, or you can contact the medina city police department,' Urquhart said. Monday, June 2 forecast: Threat of strong storms and flooding return
Download our KOLR 10 weather app Get the umbrellas back out; another stormy stretch lies ahead. The current quiet spell will come to an end Tuesday with bouts of rain and thunder throughout the rest of the week. Warm and humid conditions have filled the area, priming the region for heavy rainfall. A Flood Watch has been posted for some of the Ozarks from Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday morning. For tonight, we can expect mostly clear skies and balmy breezes through the evening. Clouds will increase late tonight with a chance for scattered showers by sunrise Tuesday, mainly near and north of I-44. This first wave of showers will quickly fade, with skies becoming partly cloudy and temperatures climbing back into the 80s. By late in the afternoon, strong to severe storms will break out across Kansas into Northern Missouri. This band of rain and thunder will gradually shift southeast Tuesday evening with a threat of heavy rainfall and a few severe thunderstorms. Strong winds and spotty hail are possible, along with an isolated tornado. The tornado risk looks limited, and primarily with storms late Tuesday afternoon into the evening north of I-44. The band of rain and thunder will slowly shift southeast through Wednesday morning. The slow push southeast will result in a stripe of very heavy rainfall, mainly along and north of I-44, where 1 to 3″ is expected with locally higher amounts. Rain amounts will quickly fall off to the south of I-44. The leftover band of clouds and showers will persist into Wednesday afternoon, keeping much of the Ozarks much milder. Additional scattered showers and thunderstorms will flare up heading into Wednesday afternoon, mainly near and south of I-44. The front will lift back to the north on Thursday. Warm and humid weather will contribute to another round of scattered showers and thunderstorms, especially during the afternoon and evening. Locally heavy rainfall and an isolated severe storm or two are possible. A bigger wave of rain and thunder is expected to sweep through the region Friday. This round may arrive early in the day and depart during the afternoon. Heavy rainfall is likely, and this wave of storms could also bring a round of severe weather. Friday's wave of storms may be able to nudge the front back to the south, pushing the focus for scattered weekend showers and thunderstorms to the south. We won't be rain-free, but rain chances should drop off through Saturday and Sunday. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. 2nd arrest made in connection to missing French Bulldog ‘Julio'
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A second arrest has been made in connection to the theft of a French Bulldog, court records show. 20-year-old Tahari Taylor was booked into the Mecklenburg County Detention Center on May 30 and charged with felony possession of stolen goods. According to an affidavit, on April 6, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police were called to the 3000 block of Barrow Road in reference to a stolen vehicle. Inside the vehicle was the victim's French Bulldog 'Julio'. MORE | The car was found on April 11, and a juvenile was charged, but Julio was still missing. While investigators were investigating an unrelated incident, data from a cell phone was reviewed and found to contain evidence from this case. The phone data contained text messages between two people on April 7, less than 24 hours after the victim's car and dog were stolen. The text stated that Taylor had the dog and was bringing it to the co-defendant's home. Further evidence on the phone confirmed that the dog and vehicle belonged to the victim. There were also photos and videos of the victim's car and dog. On May 14, a 37-year-old woman, Kendra Hunter, was also charged with felony possession of stolen goods in relation to this case. Both are being charged with felonies because the dog is worth $5,000. Court documents say that the dog's owner contacted investigators on May 1 to say that Hunter called her about the dog. It was communicated that the dog 'may be with someone's uncle who breeds French Bulldogs.' Investigators also reviewed Hunter's teenage son's cellphone, finding a photo of Julio that was taken at their home less than a day after the dog was stolen. Officials have not said if Hunter's son was the juvenile who was arrested. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
