Shark Tank's Kevin O'Leary reveals why he'll soon own TikTok

Daily Mail2 days ago
Amid the race to find a buyer for TikTok before the embattled app is forced to go dark by the US government, a savior for the widely popular social media platform has emerged. Now, Shark Tank star Kevin O'Leary tells the Daily Mail in an exclusive interview that he's more confident than ever that he'll be involved in the deal to acquire the app.
On Sunday, President Donald Trump said, 'We have a buyer for TikTok ... I think I'll need probably China approval, and I think President Xi [Jinping] will probably do it... It's a group of very wealthy people.' Sources reportedly familiar with the deal told Bloomberg this week that the president was referring to a consortium that includes tech giant Oracle Corp, investment firm Blackstone and venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz.
The rush to find a buyer for TikTok has finally come to a head more than a year after President Joe Biden signed The Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act in April 2024. The law bans social networking services that are defined as 'foreign adversary-controlled' and gave them 270 days to come into compliance with the law.
The South Asian country banned the app over national security concerns in 2020, an outcome that is entirely possible in the US. In January, TikTok voluntarily shut down in the US for 14 hours after the US Supreme Court upheld the Protecting Americans law. Indeed, Republican lawmakers are growing frustrated with repeated delays in enforcement. 'The national security concerns and vulnerabilities are still there, and they have not gone away,' Republican Congressman Darin LaHood, who is a member of the House Intelligence Committee, said last month. 'I would argue they've almost become more enhanced in many ways.'
At the heart of US national security concerns is TikTok's algorithm, which experts allege may compromise the private data of Americans and manipulate content that US citizens see in their feeds. TikTok has denied that it poses any risk to American users. Regardless, the social media platform faces the threat of a total shutdown inside the United States. September 17 is the current deadline for TikTok to find a buyer.
O'Leary, a Daily Mail columnist, maintains that he is 'quite confident' that his group – led by billionaire businessman Frank McCourt and including O'Leary, Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian and others – will be part of the TikTok solution. If anything, O'Leary said, various groups in the running for the acquisition may work together. 'Both sides are missing a piece of the puzzle,' he explained. 'Our group doesn't have any existing shareholders of ByteDance, but [Oracle's consortium] doesn't have any code that's going to be compliant with the order from Congress.'
The proposal from Oracle's camp would not be a viable one, according to O'Leary, because their bid, he says, involves licensing the algorithm from ByteDance. O'Leary predicts that the US government will require the new owner of TikTok to create a unique algorithm. That's where his syndicate comes in. 'There is not going to be a purchase of TikTok with the Chinese algorithm,' he said. 'We've spent millions of dollars on new technology that'll be the engine that is not owned by the Chinese.'
McCourt, who's leading the group called 'The People's Bid for TikTok,' previously told Forbes that users should have more control over their own data. 'Imagine a TikTok where you choose exactly how you experience content, instead of an algorithm secretly deciding for you,' McCourt said. Finally, O'Leary claims that one major hurdle remains – the opposition of the Chinese government. 'We still don't know if [Chinese President] Xi wants to sell TikTok USA to an American-owned entity,' O'Leary explained. 'It's a little unusual to announce the buying group if there's no seller.'

Amount you need for a 'minimum quality of life' in America

A family of four needs to earn over $100,000 a year just to maintain a "minimal" quality of life in the land of the American Dream — yet less than half of U.S. households can afford to reach that threshold. A recent study by the Ludwig Institute for Shared Economic Prosperity explored what it takes for Americans to maintain a "minimal quality of life" (MQL) — defined as the ability to afford basic necessities like housing, food, healthcare, and modest leisure activities. But the results revealed that the bottom 60 percent of households across the country fall far short of the income needed to reach even the baseline. Over the past two decades alone, the study found that the cost of living in the U.S. has nearly doubled — soaring by a staggering 99.5 percent. A single working adult with no children needs nearly $45,000 a year just to cover basic living expenses, while a working couple with two children must shell out a staggering $120,302 annually just to meet essential needs. 'The MQL reveals the harsh reality that the American Dream, with its promises of well-being, social connection, and advancement, is out of reach for many,' the study's conclusion read. 'Rising costs in essential areas like housing, healthcare, and education significantly outpace wage growth, leaving millions struggling to attain even a minimal quality of life.' The sobering study, published in May, put the American Dream under a harsh spotlight — asking whether the reality of today's economy still lives up to the promise of a fulfilling life for those who work hard. To get to the truth, the institute zeroed in on what it calls a 'minimal quality of life' — a no-frills basket of must-have goods and services that cover everyday expenses, letting families live decently and build a better future. The essentials factored in included raising a family, housing, transportation, healthcare, food, technology, clothing, and basic leisure — the core building blocks of everyday life. Leisure costs were defined as simple 'free-time' activities — including access to cable TV and streaming services, plus enough money for six movie tickets and two baseball game tickets annually. 'The MQL Index goes beyond traditional cost-of-living measures to provide a more comprehensive understanding of what it takes to secure a foothold on the bottom rung of the American Dream ladder and have a real opportunity to climb it over time,' the authors explained. However, the study painted a grim, harsh reality: the American Dream is slipping away, already out of reach for more than half of the country's lower-income households. The culprit? Soaring costs across nearly every aspect of life over the past two decades. Shockingly, more than half of Americans can't even afford something as critical as a $2,000 medical emergency, the study revealed. Since 2001, the costs of housing and healthcare needed to maintain even a baseline quality of life have skyrocketed — soaring by 130 percent and 178 percent respectively. This crisis is clearly reflected in the growing number of young adults still living with their parents — with the percentage of 25- to 34-year-olds in multigenerational households jumping from just 9 percent in 1971 to 25 percent by 2021. The number of Americans delaying medical treatment hit a record high in 2022, with 38 percent admitting they put off care due to the cost — a troubling sign of just how unaffordable basic health needs have become. More than half of U.S. adults — specifically 53 percent — have reportedly delayed major life goals due to financial hardships. Lower-income workers often turn to convenient options like eating out — but even that has become a luxury. Since 2001, the cost of dining out has skyrocketed by 134 percent, outpacing overall food price increases by a staggering 92 percent. Grocery store prices have surged even more dramatically, jumping by 24.6 percent since 2019 — putting even basic meals further out of reach for many families. Raising a family is yet another area hit hard by rising costs, making it increasingly difficult for even a small, traditional household to reach the minimal standard of living. Daycare costs have skyrocketed by more than 130 percent since 2001, the study revealed. Meanwhile, the price of year-round care for school-aged children has surged 106 percent over the past two decades — placing an even greater burden on working families. Since 2001, the average amount needed to attend an in-state college has soared by 122 percent, while even the cost of a simple trip has jumped 35 percent just since 2019. 'I get tired of the "Stop your Starbucks latte habit" advice, because in reality it's not people's fault,' financial planner Laura Lynch told CNBC in regard to the study. 'The structures around us have created an expectation of a lifestyle that is increasingly becoming unreachable for folks,' she added.

Tickets for Chelsea vs Fluminense slashed to less than the price of a beer as FIFA seek to avoid empty seats at Club World Cup semi-final

Football fans wanting to head to MetLife Stadium for Chelsea 's Club World Cup semi-final against Fluminense on Tuesday can now snap up tickets for less than the cost of a beer at the ground. Prices for standard admission to the match were slashed to just $13.40 (£10.50) on Saturday, a fraction of the $473.90 (£373) that fans were being asked to pay less than three days earlier. It means supporters could pay less for a ticket than for a pint of beer at MetLife, where a cold one can set you back $14 (£11). The dramatic price drop comes as FIFA battles to avoid swathes of empty seats at the newly expanded Club World Cup in the United States. The tournament, being held for the first time in its new 32-team format, has seen fluctuating crowds, with some group games witnessing tens of thousands of empty seats despite heavy promotion. MetLife has already hosted five matches at this summer's tournament with widely varying attendances. While 76,611 fans packed in to watch Real Madrid beat Borussia Dortmund on Saturday — the biggest attendance of the Club World Cup so far — other fixtures have struggled to draw similar crowds, with figures including 35,179 (Palmeiras vs Al Ahly), 39,893 (Porto vs Al Ahly), 34,736 (Fluminense vs Dortmund) and 29,321 (Fluminense vs Ulsan). Tuesday's semi-final will be the sixth of nine matches to be staged at MetLife during the tournament, with FIFA keen to ensure a strong turnout. To boost attendances, FIFA has employed a dynamic pricing model, resulting in ticket prices swinging wildly in the build-up to matches. Prices for Chelsea's clash with Fluminense initially remained high but tumbled sharply over the weekend, while tickets in the lower ring — typically among the most expensive — also dropped to around $44.60 (£35) for the game. In a further effort to improve attendance, FIFA volunteers were offered complimentary tickets for quarter-final matches last week, despite some being told earlier that free entry would not be available. The pricing strategy has left some early buyers frustrated, with fans who purchased tickets at the original high prices now seeing seats available for as little as three per cent of what they paid. FIFA has not confirmed whether those who bought tickets earlier at inflated prices will receive any refund or discount. Despite the challenges, the recent round of fixtures has seen an uptick in crowds, with Chelsea's quarter-final win over Palmeiras nearly selling out Lincoln Financial Field, and PSG's victory over Bayern Munich drawing close to 67,000 fans in Atlanta. FIFA is under pressure to demonstrate the tournament's viability to clubs, broadcasters and sponsors ahead of future editions, with president Gianni Infantino keen to position the expanded Club World Cup as a major fixture on the football calendar. The governing body has invested heavily in promoting the Club World Cup, including a substantial marketing budget in the US, and is planning to use a similar dynamic pricing model for next summer's men's World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.
