TN government sits on fare revision, auto rates go through the roof, hit Rs 80 for a km
The situation is the same while booking online as drivers demand Rs 20-Rs 30 extra, and commuters end up paying Rs 100-Rs 120 for just 1.2km. Commuters allege that a large chunk of drivers refuse the trip if they are unwilling to pay more than the fare shown on the app.
'My bike broke down, so I booked an auto from T Nagar to a location near AGS Cinemas, just 1.2km away. The fare showed Rs 130, but the driver insisted on an additional Rs 20. Paying Rs 150 for such a short distance is simply unreasonable,' said S Malini Rithish, a resident of T Nagar.
In an effort to reduce public transportation costs, the state has not revised bus fares since 2018 and has introduced the 'Magalir Vidiyal Payanam' scheme, which allows women, trans-persons and persons with disabilities to travel for free on ordinary buses.
Similarly, suburban and express train fares have remained unchanged for years. Despite these measures, commuting within the city has become increasingly expensive, especially for those who don't use two-wheelers, including the elderly, patients, and other groups.
During a recent citywide visit by TNIE, it was observed that in areas such as Thiruvanmiyur, Adyar, RA Puram and nearby localities, auto drivers demanded Rs 100-Rs 150 for trips under 1.5km. In places like Anna Nagar, Mogappair and Egmore, minimum fares were typically around Rs 100.
Meanwhile, in Ambattur, Korattur, Kolathur and Perambur, even short trips ranging from 0.8-1.2km cost about Rs 80. However, the situation is worse in T Nagar, with fares reaching Rs 250-Rs 300 for distances of just 2-3km. After 10 pm, charges for trips to hospitals, railway stations,or bus terminals from T Nagar rises to Rs 400-500.

"The half-finished connecting corridor between Kantatoli and Siramtoli forces vehicles to take long detours, funnelling traffic into already saturated by-lanes," said Ram Naresh, another auto driver. The 4.18 km-long Ratu Road flyover, built at Rs 291 crore was inaugurated in July 2025; the 2.4 km-long Kantatoli flyover, built at Rs 224 crore was opened in October 2024; and the 2.34 km-long, Rs 355-crore Siramtoli flyover launched in June 2025. Lalpur main road remains one of the city's worst choke points even after new flyovers. Vehicles pile up near the traffic signal because service lanes are narrow and encroached. "From Lalpur to Circular Road, it's a nightmare. Sometimes I'm late to college even though I leave 30 minutes early," said Priya Sharma, a student of St. Xavier's College. 63L UP women took free bus ride in festival
Lucknow: As many as 63 lakh women travelled free in UPSRTC buses during three days of Rakshabandhan this year. There were 15 lakh male co-passengers who travelled free with these women during the period. State govt allowed free travel in all categories of UPSRTC buses for three days during the festival this year, from Aug 8 morning of till Aug 10 midnight, the festival being on Aug 9. Rakshabandhan free bus travel facility in Uttar Pradesh has become a social tradition over last eight years. More than 1.23 crore women have benefited from this so far, their travel costs borne by state govt, amounting to total expense of Rs 101.42 crore in the form of tickets. Kochi–Lakshadweep seaplane service from next month
Kochi: Opening a new chapter in the state's aviation history, seaplane service to Lakshadweep from Kochi airport is set to take off next month. All preliminary steps, including trial runs, have been successfully completed, officials of Cochin International Airport Limited (Cial) said on Wednesday. The Union govt has approved SpiceJet to operate seaplanes on this sector," said Manu G, airport director, Cial. "We may be able to offer a few tickets in the Rs 2,000–4,000 range once this service is brought under the UDAN scheme... De Havilland, the manufacturer of the seaplane, has recommended a passenger capacity of 18 to 20," he said. "We have suggested four destinations within the state for seaplane operations. Services within Kerala will begin after the Kochi–Lakshadweep operations are commissioned," he said. Helicopter services to Pampa are already operated from Cial, but their commercial viability remains doubtful. "A 45-minute journey by helicopter costs around Rs 60,000 per person. Normally, it is affordable only for business-class passengers. Common people cannot bear such costs. But the seaplane project has been designed to make the journey affordable to the common man," Manu said, adding that the priority is to enhance connectivity and boost tourism. The seaplane trial flight from Kochi backwaters to Mattupetty Dam near Munnar was conducted on Nov 11, 2024. Seaplane services were originally conceived in 2013, but they had to be abandoned owing to protests and feasibility concerns. Fishermen had opposed the project, fearing disruption to fishing activities, while environmental groups raised ecological concerns.
