Top 10 African countries with the highest diesel prices in August 2025
Business Insider Africa, the top 10 African countries with the highest diesel prices in August 2025.
The list is courtesy of GlobalPetrolPrices.
The Central African Republic ranks at the top of the list.
When its price rises, the impacts spread to transportation systems, food supply chains, and family budgets. Recent occurrences throughout the continent demonstrate how disruptive high diesel prices may be.
For example, in August alone, Angola's government's decision to increase diesel prices by more than 30% following subsidy termination sparked violent protests.
Protests in Luanda resulted in some deaths and dozens of arrests, demonstrating how fuel cost is inextricably linked to social stability.
On the other side of the continent, West Africa continues to rely heavily on diesel imports, with Russia and India accounting for a sizable portion of demand.
This dependency exposes the area to global market fluctuations.
The knock-on impact is inflation, which squeezes consumers whose earnings are already falling behind growing expenses.
The pattern is clear: high diesel prices raise transportation and production costs, fuel inflation, lower buying power, and, in extreme circumstances, spark political instability.
For governments, the challenge is combining budgetary sustainability with popular tolerance.
Subsidy cutbacks reduce strain on national budgets, but without viable alternatives, citizens bear the brunt of the economic damage.
As African economies expand, their reliance on diesel remains strong.
Without more refining capacity, alternative investment, and more robust distribution networks, high diesel costs will continue to stymie economic development and social stability throughout the continent.
With that said, here are the African countries with the highest diesel cost in August, according to data from Global Petrolprices.
Compared to last month's list, when the global average price of diesel was $1.22 per liter, compared to $1.23 per liter currently, the diesel prices for the Central African Republic, Cameroon, Guinea, and Senegal have reduced slightly.
While prices for Malawi, Zimbabwe, Seychelles, and Burundi increased. The price for Sierra Leone remained the same.

Tanzania and Burundi begin construction on $2.15bn line
Tanzania and Burundi have officially commenced the construction of a $2.15bn cross-border standard gauge railway that will connect Uvinza in western Tanzania to Musongati in eastern Burundi. The line will be used for passenger services and frieght transport. Tanzanian Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa laid the foundation stone for the 240km railway, which is set to be the first of its kind in the region and marks a step towards enhancing East African trade and connectivity. The project will feature a fully electrified 1,435mm international standard gauge line and is expected to be completed by 2030. Majaliwa said: 'Once completed, passengers will be able to travel from Musongati to Dar es Salaam in a single day. Currently, cargo trucks take up to 96 hours to reach Bujumbura from Dar es Salaam. With the railway, that journey will be reduced to just 20 hours.' The railway promises to not only ease transport but also to open new investment opportunities and strengthen economic ties between the two nations. Burundian President Evariste Ndayishimiye said: 'Many asked how we would transport the minerals. This railway is the answer.' Ndayishimiye highlighted future plans to extend the railway to Kindu in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo and ultimately to the Atlantic coast of West Africa, envisioning the development of a pan-African corridor. A consortium led by China Railway Engineering Design and Consulting Group, a subsidiary of CREC, signed the contract with Tanzania Railways Corporation for the project in January. The agreement encompasses sections 7 and 8 of the SGR. Section 7 pertains to the 156km segment connecting Uvinza with Malagarasi within Tanzania, and section 8 involves the 84km link from Malagarasi to Musongati in Burundi. ‘The Envoy' to Launch on Global Streaming as Emmy-Winning Creators Spotlight Superfoods Powering Health, Tourism and Technology
' The Envoy " is a fast-paced new docuseries from Emmy-winning talent behind Netflix, CBS, YouTube and Anthony Bourdain's original team. Premiering in 2025 on leading global streaming platforms with an estimated reach of 50 to 70 million households, the series brings a cinematic lens to extraordinary places, showing how what we eat shapes where we travel and how economies grow. Each 30-minute episode explores how food is shaping the future through three pillars: At a time when trust in traditional media is low and budgets are being slashed, 'The Envoy' stands apart: world-class cinematic quality, creator-led and mission-driven to bridge soft power with real-world impact. The mission of 'The Envoy' is to make audiences smarter, more connected and optimistic about the future. Governments Spend Billions, Yet Most Miss the Mark In 2024, governments invested over $642 billion in tourism and cultural promotion. Most of it is lost in ad buys, consultant decks and one-off campaigns with no clear return. 'The Envoy' is the first purpose-built platform for driving action among U.S. consumers, who control more than $8 trillion in global spending across travel, food and lifestyle. 'Sometimes the difference between a local tradition and a global success story is the right spotlight,' said Laura Layousse, CEO of Compagnie Africaine Agroalimentaire, who is featured in 'The Envoy: Senegal.' ''The Envoy' gives us that spotlight. We've always known fonio was something special — a beautiful, resilient grain that's nourished our communities for generations. This kind of visibility can change everything for farmers, families, and the future of African agriculture.' Case Study: Thailand's Culinary Diplomacy Success In 2002, Thailand launched the Global Thai program to boost its global image through cuisine — a key success for culinary diplomacy, the concept of sharing culture through food. The economic success of pad thai as a global staple resulted in increased demand for rice noodle exports, increased travel to Thailand and improved international perception. 'The Envoy' is the first systematic approach to taking this model further. Using premium global distribution and world-class storytelling, the series accelerates visibility and perception change by spotlighting tourism, trade and technology. A New Model For Media ''The Envoy' fills a critical gap in the market, aligning the goals of governments, nonprofits, and viewers to create shared prosperity and stronger global ties,' said Todd Green, strategic advisor to 'The Envoy.' 'Our media model is built to be sustainable and a blueprint for the future of content marketing where premium storytelling, journalistic integrity and real-world impact work hand in hand.' The series is already being featured at major global forums, including at a highly curated Sundance Film Festival event held alongside executives from Whole Foods Market and The Rockefeller Foundation, to connect storytelling with strategy. The show's marketing strategy embraces the power of in-person connection, with a presence at key cultural and commercial events including the Fancy Food Show, World Travel Market, U.N. General Assembly and SXSW. Premiere Episode: Fonio in West Africa The debut episode features Bill Gates, celebrity chef Pierre Thiam, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Borso Tall and philosopher-farmer Moussa Samb as they explore one of the world's oldest and most climate-resilient grains. Fonio was the grain of kings and buried with ancient pharaohs — until it was nearly lost. Today, this nutrient-rich grain is powering a new future across the Sahel by improving nutrition, expanding economic opportunity for women and helping reverse desertification. 'The Envoy' brings this story to life as a blueprint for healthier communities, economic growth and a more resilient planet. Looking Ahead 'We've combined world-class journalism, filmmaking, creator content and marketing into one platform,' said Anne Marie Hagerty, creator and host of 'The Envoy.' 'Our team aims to launch the next 'Food Wonders of the World,' using premium content to make our viewers smarter, more optimistic and more aware of how their choices can have a positive impact on the planet.' 'The Envoy' is now inviting select partnerships with aligned brands and foundations seeking purpose-driven content that travels — culturally and commercially — to amplify their mission on a world stage. New episodes will premiere throughout 2026. For private screening access to view the show, partnership inquiries or more information, visit or email [email protected]. Japan proposes 'economic zone' linking Indian Ocean to Africa, seeks greater role in the region
YOKOHAMA, Japan -- YOKOHAMA, Japan (AP) — Japan's Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba on Wednesday proposed an economic zone connecting the Indian Ocean to Africa as the country seeks to play a greater role in the African continent while America's presence there decreases and China's influence rapidly grows. Ishiba, kicking off the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD), pledged to strengthen business and investment in the region and promote free trade by connecting the Indian Ocean region to the African continent. 'Japan believes in Africa's future," Ishiba said. "Japan backs the concept of African Continental Free Trade Area," which aims to bolster the region's competitiveness. This year's summit comes as U.S. President Donald Trump's tariff war and drastic cuts in foreign-aid programs have negatively affected development projects in Africa. Meanwhile, China has been expanding its foothold in the area since 2000 through infrastructure building and loan projects. The three-day summit in Yokohama, near Tokyo, is focusing on the economy as well as peace and stability, health, climate change and education. Leaders and representatives from about 50 countries from the African continent, as well as officials from international organizations, are attending. Japan launched TICAD in 1993. It was last held in Tunisia in 2022. 'Africa must have a stronger voice in shaping the decisions that affect its future,' United Nation's Secretary-General António Guterres, said at the event, adding that African nations are underrepresented in the international community and its decision-making process. Under the Indian Ocean Africa economic zone initiative, Japan aims to bring investment into Africa from Japanese companies operating in India and the Middle East. Ishiba said Japan will extend loans of up to $5.5 billion in coordination with African Development Bank to promote Africa's sustainable development to address their debt problems. He also said Japan aims to provide support to train 30,000 artificial intelligence experts over the next three years to promote digitalization and create jobs. Guterres said 'unjust and unfair international financial architecture" must enhance African representation and endorse a strong African voice in the decision-making process, adding that building AI capacity in developing countries in Africa would help ease digital divide in the region. Those present at the summit are expected to adopt a 'Yokohama declaration' Friday and Ishiba will announce the outcome at a news conference. ___
