Brendan Rodgers refuses to comment on reports linking Jamie Vardy to Celtic
Champions League playoffs, 1st leg: Celtic v Kairat (Kaz), Wednesday, 8pm – Live RTÉ 2, Premier Sports 1 & TNT Sports 1 Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers does not anticipate any last-gasp signings ahead of the Champions League playoffs as he declined to comment on reports linking Jamie Vardy with a move to Parkhead. Celtic have until 11pm on Tuesday night to make up to two amendments to their European squad before hosting Kairat Almaty in the first leg on Wednesday. But Rodgers looks like he will need to continue waiting for the new attacking options he has been looking for. When asked if he now expected to go with the players who are already in the building, Rodgers said: 'That's what I am feeling at this moment in time. The players that we have will be the players that I trust that can do the job. READ MORE 'If we can get some players in before then, that would be amazing but the focus has been very much on what is here at this moment.' Reports on Monday claimed that 38-year-old striker Vardy had his heart set on a move to Celtic Park after leaving Leicester at the end of last season. 'Listen, I would not speak about any individual player,' said Rodgers. 'Of course I worked really well with Jamie, he was brilliant for me in my time at Leicester. But there's been so many names floated about. I wouldn't disclose either way.' Celtic skipper Callum McGregor is looking for a controlled display against Kairat to avoid the 'chaos' of their previous Champions League playoff against Kazakh opposition. McGregor was in the team that thrashed Astana 5-0 in the first leg, eight years ago – in Celtic's most recent Champions League playoff – before seeing their aggregate lead cut to two on the way to a 4-3 defeat in Kazakhstan. The second leg will take Celtic to a venue 250 miles from the Chinese border and fans will be eager to see their team rack up a healthy lead before they embark on a 7,000-mile round trip. McGregor said: 'Obviously with the first leg being at home, can we maximise that as much as we can? But the most important thing is over the two legs that we do enough to get through. Celtic's Callum McGregor is challenged by Srdjan Grahovac of FC Astana during the Champions League playoff, second leg in 2017. Photograph: Craig Williamson/SNS Group via Getty Images 'Everyone's reference point will be the last time we played Kazakhstan opposition. You get this feeling where you have to win four or five-nil to give yourself a chance. 'We played really well that night but when we went away, we didn't play so well. 'The biggest message for us is can we control the tie over two legs so it doesn't become chaos? If we have a good night in front of goal when we go away, can we be more solid and not give up chances? 'At this level, the fewer amount of chances you give up, the better chance you have of winning a game. 'We don't necessarily need a big scoreline in the first leg. Of course we want that, we want to be on the front foot, but over the two legs, can we be more controlled and bring our style to the game?' Celtic have qualified automatically for the Champions League proper for the past three years and reached the knock-out phase last season, where they were minutes away from taking Bayern Munich to extra-time. McGregor feels that experience can help them in the playoffs but he warned they would have to earn their place. 'Hopefully we can take that into the game as well because we speak about it all the time,' the 32-year-old said. 'The only way to get experience is to actually experience the games and then when you get through them in a positive way it gives you belief, the team grow in confidence, the players understand the game a bit more. 'So when we get to this level, you have to be super concentrated – that's the only way. Small details make a difference. 'We've had a team that have been together now for a wee while, obviously adding players every year, but the core is there that have been through this sort of process now, so can we arrive at the game in full confidence and full belief that the Champions League is where we want to be? 'And then it's up to us to go and prove that over the two legs we've done enough. 'Of course the club want to be here, that's the top table, we want to play against the best teams, the best players, but again we have to earn the right over the next two games. What we did last season is now in the past.'

Transfers: Brendan Rodgers cools Jamie Vardy to Celtic speculation

We're going to extra time. #rtesport #WEURO2025 📺 Watch live on @rte2 and @RTEplayer — RTÉ Sport (@RTEsport) July 17, 2025 England forward Michelle Agyemang has returned to Brighton for a second season-long loan spell from Arsenal. The 19-year-old scored two vital equalisers in the knock-out rounds at Euro 2025 to propel the Lionesses into the Basel final, where they successfully defended their title in a penalty shoot-out victory over Spain. Agyemang was named young player of the tournament after her breakthrough campaign, and has been nominated for the women's Kopa trophy at this year's Ballon d'Or awards. Brighton head coach Dario Vidosic said: "We are thrilled to welcome Michelle back for another season. We loved working with her last year, and seeing how much she progressed as part of the squad. "What she achieved during the summer with England was incredible, but not surprising. She has the character, work ethic and relentless nature of a champion. As a club we're incredibly proud of her. "She was a pivotal part of our record-breaking season last year and we're excited for what this new season looks like with her in our attack." Agyemang, during her first spell with the Seagulls, was called into Sarina Wiegman's squad for the first time in April, scoring 41 seconds into her debut as a substitute against Belgium. She scored five goals in 22 appearances for Brighton across all competitions last season. Arsenal director of women's football Clare Wheatley said: "We're so proud of Michelle's achievements this summer and throughout her journey at Arsenal, from her first steps in our academy through to our first-team squad. "After discussing closely with Michelle and her family, we have all agreed that this move will provide Michelle with a further opportunity to develop and grow, as she continues to progress as a young player and person. "We wish Michelle every success at Brighton and look forward to welcoming her back to Arsenal at the end of her loan."

Liverpool APPROVE British record Alexander Isak transfer with Marc Guehi also wanted in £165m double-deal
LIVERPOOL have sanctioned a British record £130million move for Alexander Isak next week – confident that Newcastle will finally let the wantaway striker leave. And they also still want to land Crystal Palace skipper Marc Guehi for £35m. 6 Liverpool will sanction a £130m British record bid for Newcastle striker Alexander Isak Credit: PA 6 Arne Slot wants to continue his massive spending spree despite splashing out on another striker, Hugo Ekitike Credit: PA 6 The Reds are also set to fork over £35m to land Marc Guehi Credit: Getty The arrivals of both would take boss Arne Slot's summer spend to a sensational £466m following the captures of Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez, Hugo Ekitike, Giovanni Leoni, Will Wright and Armen Pecsi. Liverpool have already had one bid of £110m turned down for Swede Isak but will not make any official approach until after Monday's clash with Eddie Howe's Newcastle side. The atmosphere at St James' Park will already be hostile enough and the Reds do not want to inflame the situation any further. But they make their second move big for the striker who was frozen out of Toon by Howe for Saturday's 0-0 season opener at Villa Park. READ MORE SPORT STORIES EZE DOES IT Tottenham reach £60million agreement to sign Eberechi Eze from Crystal Palace During that game the Toon Army chanted: 'There's only one greedy b*****d', to make their feelings known about a striker who has downed tools, refused to play and is to be fined for missing the Villa game. Their hero worship for the front man who has scored 62 goals in three seasons since signing from Real Sociedad for £63m has disintegrated into bitterness and spite. Isak will not only be left out again by Howe but, as things stand, he will not even attend the Liverpool clash. With Guehi - who appeared to snub Oliver Glasner after Sunday's draw at Chelsea - ongoing negotiations with Palace are understood to be amicable because Eagles chairman Steve Parish and Kop CEO of football Michael Edwards have a solid relationship. CASINO SPECIAL - BEST CASINO BONUSES FROM £10 DEPOSITS There is increasing anxiety at Anfield over the stance of centre-back Ibrahima Konate who is refusing a new deal with only this season left on his current contract. He is keen to join former team mate Trent Alexander-Arnold at Real Madrid and Liverpool would consider selling this window or in January rather than let him leave for free next summer. 'That bothers me' - Jamie Carragher tells Liverpool NOT to sign £150million Alexander Isak from Newcastle Guehi, aged 25 like Konate, is seen as the ideal solution while the signings of him and Isak would create a world-record spend across any transfer window by any club - that mark currently held by Chelsea who forked out £391m in 2023. Slot told the Anfield hierarchy well before the end of last season that he saw Isak as central to the mega-spending masterplan of restructuring the squad that went on to claim the Premier League. That has not changed despite the arrival of £69m striker Hugo Ekitike from Frankfurt and him scoring in both the Community Shield and Prem opening-day win over Bournemouth. With sales expected to have topped £230m by the end of the transfer window, it is understood a decision has now been made to try to end that Isak saga by paying an extra £20m. A likely total price of £130m would also allow Newcastle to double their money on the 25 year old and save face on the sale they have grown to accept is becoming inevitable. Harvey Elliott, a £40m target for West Ham, could come into the equation in a part-exchange deal, depending on what choice the attacking midfielder makes. Howe made it clear after the Villa game that he wants the stand-off with Isak resolved as he continues his pursuit of Brentford's Yoane Wissa. 6 6 Newcastle are still desperate to land Brentford star Yoane Wissa to replace Isak Credit: Getty He stressed: 'We would like a resolution. I am talking about myself, I am sure the ownership, and the players. 'We need that clarity. You don't need any distraction. But I am not in control of that. I think only one person really (Isak) can control that.' SunSport understands that long-held discussions with Isak's representatives have ensured that personal terms will not be a problem. Newcastle have so far been reluctant to engage with Liverpool amidst attempts to first bring in replacements having lost out to Manchester United for Benjamin Sesko and, ironically, Liverpool for Ekitike. The Bees have now upped their valuation of Wissa from £40m to £60m but the DR Congo attacker – also left out at the weekend – is digging in for a move to the North East having removed all association with the club from his Instagram account. But Wissa is almost certain to get his wish - and a deal could even be struck before the weekend. 6 TRANSFER NEWS LIVE - KEEP UP WITH ALL THE LATEST FROM A BUSY SUMMER WINDOW
