Soweto streets on lockdown after e-hailing driver's killing
Two others were injured when their e-hailing vehicles were set alight at Maponya Mall, sparking outrage. The incident is allegedly linked to tensions between taxi operators and e-hailing drivers.
Community members are demanding swift action, saying business cannot continue as usual after the attack.
As protests continue outside the mall, police visibility has been increased. Residents have also placed stones across the road to block access.
Political leaders have joined e-hailing drivers in calling for safety to be prioritised. The uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MK Party) condemned the violence, saying it is disturbingly common for taxi drivers to intimidate e-hailing drivers and their passengers.
In a statement, the party alleged that taxi drivers often forcibly remove passengers from e-hailing vehicles and coerce them into using taxis instead.
'Drivers have been intimidated and accused of stealing business from taxi operators, although in reality, fully loaded taxis are a frequent sight in South Africa. This points not to a lack of demand, but rather to an unhealthy obsession with monopolising the public transport space,' the MK Party said.
Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport, Kedibone Diale-Tlabela, strongly condemned the incident, describing it as senseless, unacceptable, and a direct threat to the safety and stability of the public transport system.
She said no dispute justifies the taking of a life and stressed that such violence cannot be tolerated under any circumstances. Diale-Tlabela also urged taxi associations and e-hailing operators to resolve disputes through peaceful dialogue.

Zungu explained: 'We worked very well until I was elected Ward Councillor of 122 after the previous councillor passed away. I then resigned from the business forum to focus on my councillorship. 5 dead in head-on collision on N2 in KZN
The death toll from the horrific head-on collision between a sugar truck and a light motor vehicle on the N2 on Saturday morning has risen to five. The crash, which occurred between Amatigulu and Dokodweni, claimed five lives after emergency personnel revised the scene, The Witness reports. However, according to MEC for Transport and Human Settlements Siboniso Duma, the truck driver remains missing. 'It is not clear whether he is under the truck or if he fled the scene. Our highly efficient team from the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) and investigators from the South African Police Service's Accident Unit are currently reconstructing the accident,' said Duma. He said that based on initial reports from RTI, the truck slammed into a light motor vehicle and pushed it to the side of the road. The truck then overturned and crushed the light motor vehicle into pieces. The five victims died instantly and their bodies have been taken to the mortuary. Duma expressed condolences to the victims' families, who are being traced by officials from the department. 'We request family members and friends who are looking for their loved ones who were travelling to an event and did not reach their destination to contact Captain Thambo Shandu at Gingindlovu Police Station,' said Duma. He also urged community members, who had gathered at the crash site with buckets, waiting to loot the sugar, to leave the area immediately, warning that the diesel leak from the overturned truck poses an explosion risk. Rapper Sean Kingston jailed following luxury goods fraud case
A federal court sentenced Sean Kingston, the Jamaican-born rapper, to three and a half years in prison for his involvement in a fraud scheme. Assistant U.S. Attorney Marc Anton said, 'He doesn't like to pay and relies on his celebrity status to defraud his victims. He is a thief and a conman, plain and simple.' Sean Kingston's attorney argued he had little understanding of his finances, relying heavily on business managers and his mother. She stated, 'No one showed him how to invest money. Money went in and money went out on superficial things.' Kingston has already started repaying victims and aims to reimburse all once he is released. During sentencing, the judge ordered authorities to take Kingston into custody immediately. This was despite requests for self-surrender at a later date due to health concerns. Authorities cuffed Kingston and led him from the courtroom. Sean Kingston's story highlights the risks of mismanaging wealth and engaging in fraudulent behaviour.
