Browns name former Ravens Super Bowl winner as the starting QB for Week 1

Baltimore will face Cleveland in Week 2 and will see former Super Bowl winning QB Joe Flacco after he was named the Browns Week 1 starter Joe Flacco will return to Baltimore in Week 2 as the starting quarterback of the Cleveland Browns. Head coach Kevin Stefanski and the Browns' social media team announced on Monday afternoon. It would mark Joe Flacco's first start in Baltimore since the Ravens traded him after the 2018 season. Flacco appeared in eight games with six starts for the Colts last season, completing 162 of 248 passes (65 percent) for 1,761 yards and 12 touchdowns to seven interceptions. Flacco has been on track to start Week 1 since signing with the Browns during the free agent process. The 40-year-old quarterback didn't suit up for Saturday's 22-13 preseason victory over Philadelphia. Fellow Cleveland quarterbacks Kenny Pickett (hamstring) and fifth-round rookie Shedeur Sanders (oblique) were both sidelined, leaving third-round rookie Dillon Gabriel to start. The early assumption is that Pickett will probably be the No. 2 quarterback when healthy, while Sanders and Gabriel compete for the third-string role.

Cleveland Browns name starting QB between Joe Flacco, Dillon Gabriel, Shedeur Sanders

The Cleveland Browns have named Joe Flacco as their starting quarterback, per ESPN's Adam Schefter. Former Oregon Ducks passer Dillon Gabriel was one of four players in the mix for the spot, with Flacco earning the nod. Flacco, 40, was signed by the Browns this offseason. In addition to signing Flacco, Cleveland traded for 2022 first-round quarterback Kenny Pickett, who flamed out with the Pittsburgh Steelers in two seasons before serving as the Philadelphia Eagles' backup last season. They then drafted Gabriel in the third round of the 2025 draft before selecting Shedeur Sanders a day later in the fifth round, complicating matters in the quarterback room and putting the Week 1 starting job in question. Gabriel and Sanders received playing time in the first two Browns preseason games, each throwing for over 100 yards and showing the ability to move the offense down the field. Flacco and Pickett have yet to appear in the preseason. In the end, Flacco, who won a Super Bowl with the Baltimore Ravens in 2013, will be the guy for Cleveland come Week 1 when they face off against the Cincinnati Bengals on September 7. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. WWE Hall of Famer Rey Mysterio has added a new layer of intrigue to the future of the controversial Alberto El Patron, formerly known as Alberto Del Rio in WWE. At the AAA Triplemania XXXIII event this past weekend, Mysterio made a direct promise to the fans regarding the absent star. The comments have once again ignited speculation about a potential return to the WWE ecosystem for the former multi-time world champion. "I'll Bring Him, Wait On Me" During an appearance at the premium live event, the live crowd began to loudly chant "Alberto" for the former AAA Mega Champion. In response, Rey Mysterio took a microphone and made a simple but impactful promise to the fans. "I'll bring him, wait on me," Mysterio stated. Rey Mysterio Promises to Bring Back Alberto Del Rio During AAA TripleMania XXXIII 'I'll bring him, wait on me.' — Steve Carrier (@stevecarrier_) August 17, 2025 It is unclear if Mysterio was referring to bringing him back to AAA, where he recently lost a storyline "loser leaves town" match, or to WWE itself. Given WWE's recent acquisition of AAA, the line between the two has become increasingly blurred. Michael Tran/AFP via Getty Images More news: WWE Superstar Announces Retirement Match Alberto Del Rio's WWE career was a story of massive and immediate success. In his first run from 2010 to 2014, he won the Royal Rumble, the Money in the Bank ladder match, and was a four-time world champion. He was one of the top heels in the entire company. The Power of Rey Mysterio Previous reports have indicated that while some WWE talent were pushing for Del Rio's return, the company itself had no interest in bringing him back to the main roster due to his controversial past. However, a public endorsement from a universally respected legend and locker room leader like Rey Mysterio carries a great deal of weight. Mysterio's promise to the fans could be the first step in opening a door for his former rival. With the new WWE-AAA partnership, a role for Del Rio within the AAA brand could be a logical way to bring him back into the fold without placing him on Raw or SmackDown. The wrestling world will now be watching to see if Rey Mysterio can make good on his promise. More WWE News: For more on WWE, head to Newsweek Sports.
