The Ambassador of the Republic of Liberia to the Republic of Sierra Leone, Her Excellency Madam Angie Lavela von Ballmoos, has officially taken leave of His Excellency President Dr. Julius Maada Bio after three years of dedicated service in Sierra Leone.
Reflecting on her time in the country, Ambassador von Ballmoos noted that it was with a heavy heart that she bids farewell, marking the end of a fulfilling tenure in what she described as a beautiful and welcoming nation. She expressed deep appreciation for the warm hospitality she received and remarked that she would greatly miss the people, the shared cultural heritage, and the local cuisine.
Ambassador von Ballmoos also extended her heartfelt congratulations to President Bio on his recent election as Chairman of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
'Your appointment brings hope not only to Sierra Leone but to the entire sub-region and Africa at large,' she stated. 'We in Liberia are humbled and proud of your achievement, especially because of the personal and historical ties we share.'
She further commended President Bio's leadership, particularly his role in the African Union's Committee of Ten (C-10), his commitment to human capital development, and his advocacy for gender equality.
'We are optimistic about what ECOWAS can achieve under your leadership. The people of the region stand to benefit immensely from your efforts in fostering peace and building capacity across the sub-region,' she added.
In his response, President Julius Maada Bio thanked the outgoing ambassador for her outstanding service and contribution to strengthening ties between the two countries.
'Your service in Sierra Leone has been impactful. You have championed Liberia's interests with distinction, and as the exemplary public servant that you are, I am confident you will continue to make Liberia proud—and should be proud of yourself as well,' he stated.
President Bio added that Ambassador von Ballmoos would be deeply missed and assured her that Sierra Leone, especially Freetown, would always be home.
'You are always welcome to return anytime,' he concluded warmly.

Syria says meeting with Israeli officials sought to 'contain escalation'

A Syrian diplomatic source said Saturday (July 26) that a US-mediated meeting with Israeli officials in Paris sought to "contain the escalation" after recent sectarian violence in southern Syria prompted Israeli intervention. Israel launched strikes this month on Damascus and Druze-majority Sweida province, saying it was acting both in support of the religious minority and to enforce its demands for a demilitarised southern Syria. The Syrian diplomatic source told state television on Saturday that the Paris meeting "brought together a delegation from the foreign ministry and the general intelligence service with the Israeli side", and addressed "recent security developments and attempts to contain the escalation in southern Syria". On Thursday (July 24), US special envoy for Syria Tom Barrack had said he held talks with unspecified Syrian and Israeli officials in Paris. A senior diplomat had previously told AFP that Barrack would be facilitating talks between Damascus's Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani and Israeli Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer. According to the source cited by state TV, the meeting "addressed the possibility of reactivating the disengagement agreement with international guarantees, while demanding the immediate withdrawal of Israeli forces from points where they recently advanced". After the overthrow of longtime Syrian ruler Bashar al-Assad in December, Israel sent troops into a UN-patrolled buffer zone that used to separate the countries' forces in the strategic Golan Heights. It has since conducted incursions deeper into southern Syria, demanding the area's total demilitarisation. Damascus has previously confirmed holding indirect contacts with Israel seeking a return to the 1974 disengagement agreement that created the buffer zone. The Paris meeting "did not result in any final agreements but rather represented initial consultations that aimed to reduce tensions and reopen communication channels in light of the ongoing escalation since early December", the diplomatic source said. More meetings were planned, the source said, adding that the Syrian side emphasised that the country's unity and sovereignty were non-negotiable. "Sweida and its people are an integral part of the Syrian state," the delegation said, according to the source. Syrian and Israeli officials had previously met in Baku on July 12, according to a diplomatic source in Damascus, coinciding with a visit to Azerbaijan by Syria's interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa. The two countries have technically been at war since 1948, and Israel has occupied the Golan Heights, which it seized from Syria, since 1967. After Assad's ouster, Israel carried out hundreds of air strikes in Syria to prevent key military assets from falling into the hands of the new Islamist-led administration.

Sierra Leone's President Julius Maada Bio Chairs Virtual African Union (AU) C-10 Summit To Advance Africa's Demand For United Nations (UN) Security Council Reform

His Excellency, President Dr, Julius Maada Bio of Sierra Leone has issued a resounding call for decisive action on United Nations Security Council reform, emphasizing Africa's legitimate and long-overdue demand for permanent representation. Speaking at the Sixth Summit of the African Union Committee of Ten Heads of State and Government (C-10), which was held virtually on Friday, President Bio described the moment as a critical juncture in Africa's two-decade-long push for equity and justice in global governance. 'As a continent historically excluded from the highest decision-making body on global peace and security, our call is not for charity but for fairness,' President Bio declared. 'Africa will no longer accept marginalisation. The time to act is now.' President Bio, who also serves as the C-10 Coordinator, recounted key milestones since the Fifth C-10 Summit in Equatorial Guinea and the adoption of the Oyala Plan of Action in February 2024. He highlighted progress made under Sierra Leone's presidency of the UN Security Council in August 2024, including the first-ever high-level debate addressing Africa's exclusion from permanent membership. The President outlined the next phase of C-10's advocacy, including the submission of the African Union Reform Model to the Intergovernmental Negotiations (IGN) process, a model that calls for no fewer than two permanent seats, with all rights, including the veto if it remains and two additional non-permanent seats for Africa. 'These are not symbolic developments, they are signals that the world is finally listening,' he said, referencing global acknowledgements like the UN Pact for the Future and a direct ministerial dialogue with the P5 during UNGA79. President Bio stressed the importance of unity, coherence, and high-level engagement moving forward, especially ahead of the 80th UN General Assembly and the 20th anniversary of the Ezulwini Consensus and Sirte Declaration in September 2025. 'We must align our messaging, mobilise our partners, and continue to press for Africa's rightful place in global governance. Our inclusion is not just a matter of justice, it enhances the legitimacy and effectiveness of the Security Council itself,' he said. The summit concluded with a renewed commitment from C-10 leaders to advance the Common African Position and ensure Africa's voice remains central in all global discussions on peace and security.
