Andy Farrell and Joe Schmidt disagree over ref call as Lions clinch series win

Glasgow Times26-07-2025
The Lions clinched a 29-26 victory in the second Test at Melbourne Cricket Ground but there was high drama in the closing seconds as the match officials examined a potentially-dangerous clearout by Jac Morgan earlier in the move.
Captains Harry Wilson and Maro Itoje attempted to influence referee Andrea Piardi during the decision-making process before it was eventually judged that Morgan's contact with Carlo Tizzano was legal.

If Keenan's try had been chalked off, the series would have gone to a decider in Sydney next Saturday. Instead, the Lions have taken an unassailable 2-0 lead.
'It was a brilliant clearout. I couldn't understand what they were going back for,' Lions head coach Farrell said.
'They seem to go back for absolutely everything these days, don't they? I'm so pleased that the referee held his nerve. The right decision in my opinion.'
Furious Australia boss Schmidt felt the outcome reached by Piardi was at odds with the game's push to improve player safety and accused the Italian of failing to implement the laws.

'Just watch the footage,' said Schmidt, who insisted the incident taking place in the final minute influenced the verdict.
'You just have to read law 9.20 and you just have to listen to the description from the referee and then watch the footage when two players are described as arriving at the same time.
'You cannot hit someone above the levels of the shoulders and there's no bind with the left arm, his hand is on the ground. That's what we have seen.
'We have watched a number of replays from different angles so it is what it is. We just have to accept it.
'Players make errors. Match officials make errors. Our perspective is we felt it was a decision that doesn't really live up to the big player safety push that they are talking about.
Schmidt also placed a spotlight on Dan Sheehan's 16th-minute try when he took a quick tap penalty and crossed the whitewash by launching himself into the air.
The try was allowed to stand because he dived while in the act of scoring, but Schmidt insisted the fact he was airborne made him virtually impossible to stop.
'World Rugby are trying to make sure that we are tackling lower and so we had two tacklers going in to tackle low – and he dived and scored,' the Kiwi said.
'He is pretty much head first so what do we do to stop him scoring apart from stopping his head? There's not much else you can do.'
Farrell declared that winning the series is 'what dreams are made of', while Itoje targeted a whitewash of the Wallabies.
'When we first met, big Faz made the call. He wanted us to come here and win everything,' Itoje said.
'So don't get me wrong, we're absolutely delighted with the result, but we want to go again next weekend.'

Why the AFL are 'absolutely out of their minds' at what Caroline Wilson did on Channel Seven footy panel show - as Eddie McGuire reveals 'very sensitive' issue

Eddie McGuire has launched a furious broadside at Caroline Wilson after the veteran journalist went rogue and exposed the identity of an undercover security guard hired to protect the safety of several AFL head coaches. The league reportedly told Wilson not to bring the man to attention on Channel Sevens's The Agenda Setters footy panel show on Monday night – but the scribe ignored the plea. The request ahead of Monday's show followed the league adding beefed–up security for Michael Voss, Luke Beveridge and Simon Goodwin in recent weeks for games at Marvel Stadium in Melbourne. According to Nine's McGuire, the AFL is 'absolutely out of their minds' and 'incandescent with rage' at Wilson after she exposed the guard. 'They asked Channel Seven specifically because of the delicate nature of personal security and family security of AFL employees, not to run the story about the security guard,' McGuire said on Footy Classified on Wednesday night. 'Not only did they run the story, they ran it absolutely open and the man involved here is an executive and a top professional in undercover surveillance and security. 'She (Wilson) said "the AFL would be furious with me". Well, she got that part right. 'I can tell you they are absolutely out of their minds that this bloke has now been put in jeopardy. It's not just the football that this guy does. 'Not only that, it has brought to bear all the issues on sensitivities and privacy issues with not only the coaches, but the families of the coaches.' McGuire then questioned how the free–to–air network can salvage what is becoming a rocky working relationship. 'Channel Seven are the home of football (as the host broadcaster) and they put a ton of money in,' he said. 'But (after this saga) the balance between the ton of money and where they are at the moment is more fractious now than it has ever been.' McGuire added that if the AFL had told him not to run a story after pointing out security concerns, he would have canned the piece. 'It is very sensitive, this is a security issue, (so) I wouldn't have run the story,' he said. Footy fans on social media also felt Wilson crossed the line. 'Why would you report on this? It is clearly for the safety of the coaches and now you have outed the bloke. You say the wives are scared yet you do this. Shame,' one posted on X. 'Your story is more important than other people's safety is what you are telling us. Poor form exposing it,' said another. McGuire also said the Western Bulldogs delivered a 'please explain' to Channel Seven over Wilson's on-air comments slamming their coach Luke Beveridge, and 'humiliating their president and chief executive'. last Thursday night.

Llanberis Student Aims for Team GB with School's Support

Teenager Toby Sutcliffe is making serious waves in the world of canoe slalom – and his school is behind him every stroke of the way. The 15 year-old from Llanberis, a pupil at St Gerard's School in Bangor, is currently ranked among the top five C1 slalom athletes in the UK for his age group. A dedicated year-round paddler, Toby trains on Llyn Padarn and at the National Water Sports Centre in Nottingham and has competed in the Junior Slalom European Cup in France and Germany as part of the Welsh Performance Team. He joined St Gerard's aged seven and is about to start Year 11. Balancing elite sport with his GCSE studies, Toby says the school has played a key role in helping him chase his goals. 'My ultimate aim is to reach the highest national division, then Team GB,' said Toby. 'I'd love to make it to the World Championships or the Olympics one day. 'The school has been so supportive — always helping me catch up or send me extra work when I've missed lessons to compete overseas. I'm really grateful.' Wales Performance Squad Toby's passion for paddling began during the pandemic, after his previous interest in ski slalom was put on hold. 'We had access to the lake and tried a few local taster sessions,' said mum Vicki. 'From his very first go in a C1 canoe, he just lit up — the smile hasn't left his face since.' Dad Will added: 'It's great to see St Gerard's backing young athletes. Their support and sponsorship for Toby have made a real difference and the sport needs new talent like him coming through.' Toby is also finding success in kayak cross, a fast, contact-heavy race discipline that debuted at the 2024 Paris Olympics. He reached the semi-finals in Augsburg, Germany, and came third in a recent open event in Nottingham. Sid Sinfield, Performance Manager at Paddle Cymru, said: 'With a strong work ethic and a passion for canoe slalom, Toby is not only competing at a high level for his age but is also on a clear trajectory toward national and international success. 'As he continues to train, travel, and compete, support and sponsorship play a vital role in helping him reach his full potential. 'Funding enables access to top-level coaching, specialised equipment, and travel to key races across the UK and Europe – essential components in the development of a world-class athlete. 'St Gerard's School's backing of Toby is an opportunity to invest in the future of British canoeing and to support a driven young athlete with the talent and determination to go far.' Headteacher Campbell Harrison added: 'We're proud of Toby and all our pupils as they chase their dreams. 'Whether in sport, academics, or the arts, St Gerard's is committed to helping young people achieve their full potential — and we're behind Toby all the way.'

Cesc Fabregas' Serie A side won the clash 3-2, but not before trying to go 12 rounds with their rivals after a stunning brawl broke out at the end of the first half. Former West Ham star Pablo Fornals was at the centre of the brawl as he exchanged blows with Máximo Perrone. The rivals were seen squaring up to one another before they got involved in a shoving match. However, he was unable to do so as Betis and Como players rushed over to intervene, before many of them also ended up in grappling matches of their own while trying to diffuse the situation. There was one unfortunately funny moment in the melee as Cucho Hernandez came flying in to try and land a punch on a rival, only to punch his own team-mate, Natan, in the face instead. Fornals avoided being sent off despite landing the first blow, with the same lack of punishment also going to Hernandez following his attempted flying punch. In the aftermath, ex-Arsenal star Hector Bellerin tried to speak to the referee to get the situation under control. The 30-year-old was guided away from the official while still protesting, before tempers between the teams flared again by the tunnel.
