Home Minister assures peaceful ZPTC byelections in Pulivendula and Ontimitta amid rising tensions, allegations

The Hindua day ago
Amid rising tensions ahead of the ZPTC by-elections in Pulivendula and Ontimitta in Kadapa district on Tuesday, Home Minister Vangalapudi Anitha has assured that polling will be conducted peacefully in both constituencies.
Addressing a press conference at the Velagapudi secretariat on Monday, she stated, 'The Pulivendula and Ontimitta ZPTC elections will take place in a peaceful environment. It is surprising that the former Chief Minister and Pulivendula MLA, Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, is alleging irregularities and violence.'
Ms. Anitha recalled that in the past, Pulivendula had witnessed only unanimous polls, with common instances of nomination papers being torn and candidates threatened. 'Now, with 11 nominations filed in Pulivendula, it is evident that elections are being held democratically,' she added.
Responding to allegations regarding the relocation of polling booths from villages to more distant locations, she clarified, 'The changes in polling booths are entirely under the Election Commission's jurisdiction. The notification was issued on July 28, and objections were invited at that time. No political party raised any concerns then. The polling booths are approximately two kilometers away, not just for YSRCP but also for TDP. Therefore, arrangements for transportation have been made.' Ms. Anitha also expressed confidence that the TDP would secure victories in both Pulivendula and Ontimitta.
Sharing similar sentiments, BC Welfare Minister S. Savita accused the YSRCP chief of spreading falsehoods to mislead the public amid fears of defeat in the Pulivendula ZPTC by-election. She said, 'Jagan's anxiety is clear as he resorts to fake narratives and undemocratic tactics. The public is aware of the truth surrounding the murder of his uncle, Vivekananda Reddy, yet he shamelessly attempts to manipulate facts and drag the Chief Minister's name into it. These cheap tactics will not save him this time.'
Ms. Savita contrasted the current NDA government's approach, which seeks votes on the basis of its Super Six promises and transparent governance, with the previous regime under Mr. Jagan, where opposition candidates were often barred from filing nominations in local body polls. 'Back then, the Election Commission itself faced intimidation, and Mr. Jagan suppressed democracy. Today, nominations are being freely filed in Pulivendula itself — a clear testament to true democracy,' she concluded.

‘EC made me grandma': First-time voter Minta Devi shown as 124 years old in Bihar electoral rolls

The Election Commission has made me a grandma, said Minta Devi, suppressing a laugh, on a day opposition MPs led by Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra staged a demonstration in the national capital with her name and photo printed on their shirts. If the draft electoral rolls in Bihar were to be believed, the 'first time' voter, at '124 years', could well be the oldest in the state, where more than 7 crore electors will be exercising their franchise in a couple of months. 'How can I be blamed for the goof-up? I had filled up my enumeration form online, after having waited in vain for a visit by the booth-level officer,' said the 35-year-old, whose name is now trending on social media. However, the Siwan district administration has issued a statement, claiming that the would-be voter of the Daraunda assembly segment has been contacted and remedial steps were taken well before the anomaly made headlines. According to a statement issued by the collectorate of Siwan, 'An application was obtained from Minta Devi on August 10 for rectifying the error, to which her attention was drawn by the BLO. It will be dealt with during the claims and objections phase (of special intensive revision of electoral rolls)'. The matter has come to light at a time when parties opposed to the ruling NDA are assailing the special intensive revision (SIR), in the Parliament as well as the Supreme Court. Minta Devi, however, is enjoying a good laugh. 'I am thrilled that, finally, at the age of 35, I may get a chance to cast my vote. Many polls have passed since I became eligible but somehow my name never made it to the voters' list. If the EC has made me a grandma (daadi bana diya) in the process, it is fine with me. I have nothing to fear. I had stated my year of birth as 1990, the same as in my Aadhar card. I cannot help it if in the draft rolls 1990 has been made 1900,' she told reporters. Meanwhile, social media was left abuzz with users raising doubts over two centenarians, both women, figuring in the voters' list for another assembly constituency. The election officials were left coming out with statements asserting that Farzana Khatun and Asha Devi, both voters of Pirpainti assembly segment in Bhagalpur district, were, in fact, 120 years old. The EC, however, did not respond to the claim, in a section of the media that the two centenarians were also registered as 'first-time voters'.

Oppn's ‘bulk' objections to SIR not entertained: EC

Patna: The Election Commission (EC) has defended its handling of Bihar's special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, saying objections from opposition parties were not entertained as they were sent "in bulk" rather than individually, as required under the prescribed procedure. The EC said such submissions could not be processed under the formal "claims and objections" mechanism, but were being treated as general complaints and verified accordingly. The clarification came after the opposition INDIA bloc accused the EC of "doing politics" and attempting to set a "narrative" that no political party had submitted complaints about the draft voter roll published on Aug 1. The EC's latest bulletin on Tuesday reiterated that no "claims or objections" had been filed by any of the 12 recognised national and state parties in the 11 days since publication. However, the EC confirmed receiving 13,970 claims and objections directly from individual electors, 341 of which have already been disposed of. Leader of the opposition in Bihar Assembly, Tejashwi Pratap Yadav, said the bloc was not questioning the SIR itself but the manner in which it was carried out. "We are not questioning the special intensive revision, rather the way it was carried out. There could be no bigger crime than an elector missing the chance to cast their vote," he said, alleging that many names had been deleted from the rolls, while some electors lacked documents or were living outside the state. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like NRIs Living In Ukraine Are Eligible For INR 2 Lakh Monthly Pension. Tejashwi also claimed the EC had repeatedly ignored Supreme Court guidance and accused it of misusing its position as a constitutional body. Referring to deputy chief minister Vijay Kumar Sinha allegedly possessing two EPICs, he said, "Nobody would have perhaps known that if I had not exposed it." Congress legislature party leader in the assembly, Shakeel Ahmad Khan, alleged that "an uncountable number" of claims and objections had been sent to the EC, which he accused of "denying reality." He said Rahul Gandhi's request for an appointment to present proof of "vote chori" was declined. RJD spokesperson Chitranjan Gagan argued that the opposition had sought a category-wise list of voters marked as dead, shifted or duplicated, but had not received it, making it difficult for party agents to file claims or objections in the required format. CPI-ML state secretary Kunal claimed hundreds of objections had been filed through booth-level and local committees, citing one complaint about the deletion of 63 names under the Jale Assembly constituency. He alleged that the EC was "trying to set a narrative" that nothing was wrong with the rolls. An EC official, however, maintained that parties had failed to follow the stipulated procedure. "They were supposed not to send the claims/objections in bulk but one by one. So they were not entertained," the official said, adding that the submissions were now being reviewed as general complaints to verify their authenticity. Voter list war: Poll panel vs Opposition over 'vote chori' allegations

The political war of words continues regarding the voter list controversy, with opposition MPs staging protests outside Parliament. The INDIA bloc, including Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, wore 'Minta Devi' T-shirts, referring to a voter in Bihar listed as 124 years old, who was later found to be 35. Controversy also erupted after the Congress shared a 'Vote Chori' campaign video featuring actor KK Menon, who refuted his willing participation. The opposition alleges the Election Commission of India is not enforcing 'one man one vote' and stated, "ECI is BJP." The Supreme Court observed that the poll body was correct in not accepting Aadhaar card as proof of citizenship during the special intensive revision of the voter list in Bihar. The Election Commission also called out opposition parties for not filing objections to the revised voter list. The BJP has defended the Election Commission, calling the opposition's actions a 'tamasha'.
