Horses on parade as Sandown honours John Hales
Hales died in January at the age of 85 but his influence in racing has been felt consistently over the past decades with his famous yellow silks sported by some of the most popular National Hunt horses.
In recent years Hales joined forces with the likes of Sir Alex Ferguson and Ged Mason, and both were on hand to present the special award to Hales' widow Pat and daughter Lisa at the annual presentations which preceded the action on the final day of the season.

Former Manchester United manager Ferguson paid tribute to his friend and his love of grey horses and said: 'He was a fantastic man with a great eye for a horse. He loved his grey horses and I don't know why he did, but he had an obsession with grey horses and some of them were fantastic.
'He was a great mind and a kind man and we'll miss him. His passions were his horses and Aston Villa and he was a winner. He loved the sport no matter how they performed but he liked to win.'
Mason added: 'It was a great tribute by Sandown to give us the opportunity to remember what a great man John Hales was and not just to his friends and family, but also to racing and the wider racing community.
'His achievements are second to none and it's easier to say what races he hasn't won rather than the ones he has one. Hopefully we can continue his legacy into the future with Sir Alex and with Pat and Lisa's enthusiasm alongside us, I'm sure we will.'

The great One Man is perhaps one of Hales' most famous horses, while he also won the Grand National with Neptune Collonges.
The Aintree hero – who famously struck in the narrowest of fashions in the hands of Daryl Jacob in 2012 – was amongst six of Hales' horses to be paraded before racing, with others taking a lap of the parade ring including Champion Chase hero Politologue and last year's Ryanair Chase winner Protektorat.
Lisa Hales added: 'Dad loved jump racing and he loved Sandown Park, so it is very touching that he will be remembered with the Sandown Park Special Award.
'From the days of the great One Man right up to L'Eau Du Sud's success in the Henry VIII Novices' Chase at the end of last year, there were many great occasions for us at Sandown Park over years and it is a huge for the Hales family that dad is honoured in this way.'

In recent years, Hales – along with his co-owners – has been central to the continued success of Paul Nicholls' Ditcheat operation, with the 14-time champion trainer hoping this year's stars Caldwell Potter and Kalif Du Berlais continue to fly the flag for Hales' memory.
'What an enthusiast John was. To involve his family and his pals in those horses, they've had so much fun,' said Nicholls.
'It's an exciting time with Caldwell Potter and Kalif Du Berlais, with plenty of younger ones at home. Olly Murphy has a few nice ones for them as well as Dan (Skelton), so we're all looking forward to next season.'

Unai Emery dealt fresh blow as another star hints at Aston Villa transfer exit
Missing out on the Champions League for next season is set to cost Aston Villa heavily next season, with boss Unai Emery seeing several of his players admit their futures are uncertain Youri Tielemans has admitted that his future at Aston Villa is uncertain, despite sweeping the club's awards. Tielemans joined Villa in the summer of 2023 after scoring the winner for Leicester City in that year's FA Cup final. Having taken some time to adjust to Villa's style of play, the Belgian became a key player for Unai Emery. He featured in 53 games in all competitions, scoring five goals and notching 10 assists in the process. Tielemans started every match in Villa's run to the quarter-finals of the Champions League. The campaign ended in a tide of disappointment though, with Villa qualifying for the Europa League, rather than the premier continental competition. That has led to fresh concerns over Villa's compliance with the Premier League's Profit and Sustainability Rules. That means that sales could well be needed this summer to ensure Emery's men avoid receiving a points deduction. Star keeper Emi Martinez already appears to be on his way out. And Tielemans has admitted his future is also far from certain, despite having two more years to run on his contract at Villa Park. 'There's nothing definitive or ruled out about whether I'll stay or leave. But I feel good at Aston Villa; I feel a lot of confidence from the club and the manager,' he said while on international duty with Belgium. 'Of course, I was able to score five goals and provide 10 assists this season. But I was also influential in my team's play. I've been consistent and I think I've improved throughout the season." 'We're used to playing a lot of matches, recovering between games. So, I didn't feel tired in Skopje. It must be said that I spent 60 minutes on the bench [laughs]. But now I'm ready to play and represent the country this Monday." Tielemans was crowned both Supporters' and Players' Player of the Season at Villa's awards night following his impressive season. He admitted to being left 'frustrated' at the end of the season after missing out on the top five. He said: "Frustrating to end the season this way. Thank you for your support throughout the whole campaign, Home and Away you've been amazing." If Tielemans did depart, it would be another blow for Emery amid Martinez's expected exit. After the season concluded, the Villa boss admitted that major changes could be coming in the Second City this summer. "We will see about the team, the players, but of course, they are responding on the field. Of course, then we will see about everything, how we are going to try to get better for the next season," he said after the final day defeat to Manchester United. 'Frustrated today, but we are in the Europa League, we are in Europe. To be in Europe is important and being in three years in a row I think is something we are showing our consistency.'

Viktor Gyokeres is 'FURIOUS with Sporting Lisbon for performing U-turn over his £84m release clause' - as Man United target pushes for summer exit
Manchester United target Viktor Gyokeres is reportedly furious with his current club Sporting Lisbon over their handling of his potential exit this summer. Gyokeres has been linked with a move to the Premier League, with United moving ahead of the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea in the race for his signature. The Swedish striker has a €100m (£84m) release clause in his Sporting contract, but he is understood to have reached a gentleman's agreement with the club at the start of the season over a reduced asking price. Gyokeres was promised that he could leave Sporting this summer for €60m (£51m), plus €10m (£8m) in add-ons, to take the overall transfer fee down to £59m. However, according to Portuguese outlet Record, Sporting's board are now seeking in the region of €80m (£67m) before allowing Gyokeres to move on. The 27-year-old is believed to be livid with Sporting's U-turn and feels they have failed to deliver on their promise to him. Gyokeres has responded by removing any reference to Sporting on his Instagram account, having also got rid of any mention of Sweden and Nike. Since joining Sporting from Coventry two years ago, Gyokeres has scored an astonishing 97 goals in 102 matches. He is now one of the most in-demand strikers in European football, and he appeared to bid farewell to Sporting fans after completing a domestic double with the club last month. But there may still be work to be done for him to force through a summer move due to a current disagreement over his price-tag. United have made Gyokeres their main striker target after consistently struggling for goals under Ruben Amorim. The Red Devils have already completed the £62.5m signing of Matheus Cunha from Wolves, and they are also keen on Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo who has indicated that he would like to move to Old Trafford. Cunha and Mbeumo could occupy the two No 10 roles in Amorim's 3-4-2-1 formation, but he still wants a new forward to lead the line and is eyeing a reunion with Gyokeres after they worked together at Sporting. But getting a deal over the line may not be easy, especially if Sporting stand their ground on their asking price.

Liverpool transfer could open door to hand Jack Grealish move joining old rival
Jack Grealish is looking for a way out of Manchester City and Liverpool's pursuit of Florian Wirtz could see Bayer Leverkusen come knocking for the former Aston Villa man - and a somewhat unholy union with ex-Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag Bayer Leverkusen could go after Jack Grealish as they eye a replacement for Florian Wirtz - who is closing in on a British-record move to Liverpool this summer. The German side are in negotiations with the Reds and have rejected several bids, but the Premier League champions have returned with a fresh offer that is closer to Leverkusen's £126million valuation. Leverkusen have already seen Jeremie Frimpong leave for Anfiel d and, if and when Wirtz leaves, it will result in new manager Erik ten Hag having a huge pot to re-invest in his squad. Grealish has been identified as the kind of creative influence who can fill the void left by Wirtz. The 29-year-old has fallen well down the pecking order at Manchester City and there is an acceptance from all parties that a move elsewhere is best. Grealish has been hugely influential in the past and Leverkusen may believe they can get him back to that level. Ten Hag himself is known to be an admirer, reports The Sun, and those close to the player believe he is keen on a move overseas as he looks to revive his career. Tottenham, Newcastle, and former club Aston Villa are all among those who are also reportedly interested in the player, who cost £100million back in 2021. Italian champions Napoli have been linked with the attacking midfielder. City are prepared to take a massive loss on their record signing but are still wanting around £40m before they consider letting him depart. A loan move has also been touted but with Grealish earning £300,000-a-week his salary could prove an issue for any potential suitor. Pep Guardiola has admitted that Grealish needs regular minutes despite using him so sporadically. He said: 'Of course, Jack has to play. He's an unbelievable player that has to play football every three days. It didn't happen this season and last season either. He needs to do it, with us or another place. Guardiola also added: 'It's nothing personal with Jack. I'm the person who fought for him to come here and the person who fought for him to stay here this season."
