Horses on parade as Sandown honours John Hales

Hales died in January at the age of 85 but his influence in racing has been felt consistently over the past decades with his famous yellow silks sported by some of the most popular National Hunt horses.
In recent years Hales joined forces with the likes of Sir Alex Ferguson and Ged Mason, and both were on hand to present the special award to Hales' widow Pat and daughter Lisa at the annual presentations which preceded the action on the final day of the season.

Former Manchester United manager Ferguson paid tribute to his friend and his love of grey horses and said: 'He was a fantastic man with a great eye for a horse. He loved his grey horses and I don't know why he did, but he had an obsession with grey horses and some of them were fantastic.
'He was a great mind and a kind man and we'll miss him. His passions were his horses and Aston Villa and he was a winner. He loved the sport no matter how they performed but he liked to win.'
Mason added: 'It was a great tribute by Sandown to give us the opportunity to remember what a great man John Hales was and not just to his friends and family, but also to racing and the wider racing community.
'His achievements are second to none and it's easier to say what races he hasn't won rather than the ones he has one. Hopefully we can continue his legacy into the future with Sir Alex and with Pat and Lisa's enthusiasm alongside us, I'm sure we will.'

The great One Man is perhaps one of Hales' most famous horses, while he also won the Grand National with Neptune Collonges.
The Aintree hero – who famously struck in the narrowest of fashions in the hands of Daryl Jacob in 2012 – was amongst six of Hales' horses to be paraded before racing, with others taking a lap of the parade ring including Champion Chase hero Politologue and last year's Ryanair Chase winner Protektorat.
Lisa Hales added: 'Dad loved jump racing and he loved Sandown Park, so it is very touching that he will be remembered with the Sandown Park Special Award.
'From the days of the great One Man right up to L'Eau Du Sud's success in the Henry VIII Novices' Chase at the end of last year, there were many great occasions for us at Sandown Park over years and it is a huge for the Hales family that dad is honoured in this way.'

In recent years, Hales – along with his co-owners – has been central to the continued success of Paul Nicholls' Ditcheat operation, with the 14-time champion trainer hoping this year's stars Caldwell Potter and Kalif Du Berlais continue to fly the flag for Hales' memory.
'What an enthusiast John was. To involve his family and his pals in those horses, they've had so much fun,' said Nicholls.
'It's an exciting time with Caldwell Potter and Kalif Du Berlais, with plenty of younger ones at home. Olly Murphy has a few nice ones for them as well as Dan (Skelton), so we're all looking forward to next season.'

Man Utd fans react as adidas unveil new home kit influenced by Old Trafford

Ruben Amorim is preparing for his first full season in charge of Manchester United and the team will hope for a fresh start in their new 2025-26 kit, which has paid homage to their iconic Old Trafford stadium Manchester United fans have hailed their new 2025-26 home kit as "a classic already" and hope it will see the team's fortunes reversed after a difficult campaign in 2024-25. The Red Devils could only finish 15th in the Premier League after a turbulent season under both Erik ten Hag and successor Ruben Amorim, losing a total of 18 matches. United also suffered heartache in the Europa League final as they were beaten 1-0 by Tottenham, meaning they missed out on Champions League football next season - but the team will be hopeful they can turn over a new leaf under Amorim in their new strip. The Adidas shirt is influenced by their iconic Old Trafford stadium, with an "abstract sleeve graphic" symbolising elements of the pitch, stands and tunnel. There is a V-neck collar laced with black edges and a white stripe going through the middle - and the same detail is seen on the edges of the sleeves. The kit also has black stripes running down the shoulders and the words "Theatre of Dreams" on the back of the shirt. Fans have been left impressed by the design, as one said: "A bold, clean and burning red [kit] that screams power, pride and a new era! Eager to see the away kit." Another said: "Forever red. This one's a classic already," while a third added: "I really like this, simple but with just enough flair." Another wrote: "Excited to see the new home kit honouring Old Trafford. Looking forward to the new season with adidas." Adidas chief Juergen Rank said they wanted to design a shirt that paid tribute to the club's DNA, playing on their iconic red colours. "The colour red is fundamental to the club's DNA. There have been many different expressions of it over the years and for this season we wanted to do something a little different, using the sleeves as a canvas. "The abstract graphic stays true to the club's DNA while providing an innovative look at feel to an otherwise classy and classic jersey." The shirt is available to buy on Manchester United's official website and will cost £85. For the 'authentic' version of the jersey, the price is £120.

Man Utd told they have the 'best young player in the Premier League'

Manchester United are enduring a miserable spell on and off the pitch but can at least take solace in the fact they have the 'best young player in the Premier League'. United's 2024-25 campaign could hardly have gone any worse, with Ruben Amorim's side finishing just 15th in the Premier League. A promising European run threatened to paper over the cracks but Manchester United were beaten by Tottenham in the Europa League final to ensure they not only failed to win a trophy last season but missed out on any European football for next season. Off the pitch, Sir Jim Ratcliffe's cost-cutting measures has dampened the mood at Old Trafford and led to a divide between the fans and those in charge of the club. In better news for Manchester United, club captain Bruno Fernandes has rejected a lucrative summer move to Saudi Arabia in favour of staying at the Premier League strugglers. Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro's Football Newsletter. Sign up to our newsletter and then select your team in the link so we can send you football news tailored to you. Fernandes has been United's most important player over the past five-and-a-half seasons but it not the only capable member of the squad, with Louis Saha describing Amad Diallo as the 'best young player in the Premier League'. Diallo has quickly developed into one of United's most exciting players since his £19m move from Atalanta in 2021. The 22-year-old had two loan spells away from Old Trafford at Rangers and Sunderland but was a rare bright spart for Manchester United last season, scoring 11 goals in 43 games. Asked who he rates as the best young player in the Premier League, ex-United striker Saha told 10bet: 'Amad Diallo. 'What I like most about him is that quality that some youngsters have in the way he communicates, and the way he acts. 'He is playing for the team, he isn't demanding this or that from his teammates and managers. 'Sometimes, when you're established in the side and you've been there a few years, you can get a bit settled, a bit entitled. You start asking for things from the manager, saying you want to play in this position, or in a certain way. 'But Amad still has the attitude of a youngster looking to impress, but at the same time he has this enormous talent and potential, yet he's still been patient. 'At times, he was out on loan, not picked as a starter, and he never made demands or sounded off in the press. He has the right attitude, he's got the perfect mentality for a Manchester United player. Cole Palmer (Chelsea), Ryan Gravenberch (Liverpool), Liam Delap (Ipswich Town), Anthony Elanga (Nottingham Forest), Dean Huijsen (Bournemouth), Joao Pedro (Brighton), Morgan Rogers (Aston Villa), and William Saliba (Arsenal) 'Because of this, he's only going to develop, he's only going to get better. He has the attitude that will keep him focused, he won't misbehave. 'This is the standard I want from my United players, and actually the older players around him need to realise he's setting the example that they have to follow, not the other way around. 'They should see that they're here at the club to make sacrifices, to work for the manager, the fans, and that's it. I'm not here to make demands. 'That's why he's got my respect. He came back earlier than we expected from his injury and he's already scoring goals. He's brilliant.' Saha won two Premier League titles and the Champions League at Manchester United but has watched his former club suffer a huge fall from grace over the past decade. United's dismal form led to intense scrutiny over Amorim's position at Old Trafford but Saha still has 'faith' in the former Sporting Lisbon manager. 'I've got faith in him, because I think the brutal honesty he acts with is what is needed,' Saha added. 'The players are under no illusion what he wants from them, but he also needs to improve too. 'I think he spent too much time watching the side lose and made too few changes. I think he wasted some time. I know you can't change everything without a pre-season, but now he has one. 'He needs to use his analysis and communicate to his players, and both he and the players need to do better. More Trending 'It's hard to see how it could get worse, frankly, but this summer he has the chance to pick the players he wants, but it's not just about their quality on the pitch with the ball. 'It's about the personality of the players, and you need players who aren't whining to the press everyday. You want players who aren't scared to work hard and sacrifice. 'There are too many passengers. You need a squad of 20 soldiers, and maybe you can carry a few flair players who can act out occasionally. 'You need the committed players to keep the crazy ones in check, and keep their nonsense to a minimum. And they will have to listen. Right now, that balance isn't there. The players aren't under control.' For more stories like this, check our sport page. Follow Metro Sport for the latest news on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Rasmus Hojlund 'shaking in his pants' as Man Utd striker dealt fresh blow

Manchester United striker Rasmus Hojlund has found things tough at club and international level over the last 12 months and he has been handed a painful wake-up call As if his dismal Manchester United season wasn't bad enough, Rasmus Hojlund has seen his stock fall at international level. The Danish international has eight goals for his country, but only one of those has arrived since the end of 2023, and there's now a feeling he's no longer an automatic starter. Hojlund scored just five Premier League goals at club level last season, though his Europa League exploits allowed him to reach double figures in all competitions. He started the first game in Denmark's friendly double-header, drawing a blank against Northern Ireland, and dropped to the bench for the meeting with Lithuania on Tuesday. ‌ One man who has found goals much easier to come by at club level is compatriot Mika Biereth. The former Arsenal youngster hit the ground running for Monaco after joining in January, and made his senior international bow against Portugal in March. ‌ It was Biereth, not Hojlund, who partnered Kasper Dolberg up front in the Lithuania friendly. The 22-year-old wasted little time finding the net for the first time at senior international level, scoring the first of five Danish goals, and came in for praise post-match as compatriot Hojlund got a reminder of the challenge ahead. "Rasmus Hojlund must be shaking his pants by now. He has been overtaken," Danish outlet Bold's player ratings read, describing Bieret as "constantly poisonous near the goal" after he also drew the last-man foul which saw Lithuania's Edgaras Utkus sent off before half-time. Hojlund has been linked with a summer move away from Old Trafford, with reports of interest from Serie A. Champions League finalists Inter Milan are among those linked, but the striker has showed no signs he's looking to move on. "No. As I've told you before, I try to stay away from all that, because it's both for better and for worse these days," he told Ekstra Bladet during the June international break. "I know I can't get much out of reading things. I know what the facts are, and that is that I have a contract with Manchester United until 2030. I expect to play there, so I'm just getting ready for some summer vacation and then hopefully a good preseason." ‌ Back in February, Denmark coach Brian Riemer also talked up Hojlund's club colleague Chido Obi. The teenage striker made his senior United debut under Ruben Amorim in February, but was with Denmark's Under-20s rather than their senior squad during the most recent break. "Try to think about how many times we have sat with a Danish national team and said: 'We are missing players, when will some strikers come?'," Riemer told Viaplay (via Tipsbladet). "We have so many young players, some of them may be just young enough to break through, but how great is it that we have so many knocking on the door – I think that is important to say." However, he also suggested Obi was some way away from a senior interntional bow, adding: "The senior national team requires one more step – you need to come in and play more regularly before the senior national team is an option for you. It's hard to get there if you don't play regularly for your club team." Join our new MAN UTD WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Manchester United content from Mirror Football.
