French police watch on hopelessly while huge groups of migrants - many carrying small children - set sail for Britain as Labour's one-in, one-out policy shows no sign of deterring illegal arrivals

Daily Mail4 days ago
Three migrant dinghies left from just one French beach alone this morning – in defiance of riot police and Labour's new migrant returns deal.
Yesterday Keir Starmer 's much-trumpeted one-in, one-out 'deterrent' policy came into force.
But it appeared to be having no effect this morning.
In astonishing scenes demonstrating the scale of migrant departures to England, four separate groups of migrants ran on to the sweeping sands at Gravelines, near Calais, just after 7am.
The groups were mainly men, but also included women, with one carrying a little boy sucking on a blue dummy. Another man carried a child on his shoulders as he waded into the waters.
The groups spread over a mile of shoreline, gathering in three bunches, with one bunch stood a little back on the beach, and the other two groups in the water up to their waists. They were waiting for 'taxi boat' dinghies coming to collect them.
All this under the noses of two dozen police, who had arrived on the sand some time after the Daily Mail, but before any of the migrants emerged from the extensive dunes behind the shore.
At first, the officers were an impressive sight, striding along the front of the dunes in a long line, riot shields glinting in the early morning light, tear gas launchers brandished high.
A Police Nationale sand-coloured Land Cruiser sped up and down the huge expanse of sand too, occasionally venturing into the high dunes.
But when the four large groups of migrants started running the 800 yards to the water-line, it made a mockery of police attempts to stop them.
It would have taken ten-times as many police to have any hope. No tear gas was fired, probably because it would have instantly dispersed in the brisk winds coming in from the sea, and the migrants were anyway dispersed over such a wide area.
And while Gravelines is perhaps the favourite launch-spot for people smugglers' dinghies, there are of course numerous other beaches spread over some 100 miles of coastline, from the Belgian border to Le Touquet, Berck, and beyond to the south.
Here, the people smuggling gangs and the migrants typically paying £1,200 a fare for their places on these 'taxi boats' were launching apparently at will, after several days of no launches due to poor weather.
In theory, under Labour's new deal the first small boat arrivals could be detained as early as today for possible removal to France.
The deal will see migrants who came here illegally across the Channel exchanged 'one for one' with others still in France.
Police on the beach simply watched as the largest of the migrant groups, on the east end of the beach, patiently awaited the first of two taxi boats
Migrants in France will be flown to Britain by the Home Office and handed a visa to live here for up to three months after successfully applying while their final application is considered.
But it emerged yesterday that small boat migrants who lodge human rights claims in Britain will evade being returned to France in an extraordinary loophole.
It opens up the prospect of human rights lawyers encouraging migrants to lodge spurious claims simply to avoid being earmarked for removal.
But this morning, the deal seemed to be having little impact.
Once the migrants had reached the sea, and were stood in their separate groups strung along the wide beach here, the riot police did precisely nothing.
The majority of the officers stood together in one large group, still holding tear gas launchers and riot shields, but not doing anything with them.
They simply watched as the largest of the migrant groups, on the east end of the beach, patiently awaited the first of two taxi boats.
We had seen the first 30ft long dinghy arrive from the western, Calais side of Gravelines, at 6.30am. It chugged parallel to the coast, as much as a mile off shore, as if towards Belgium.
Migrants are said to pay people smugglers between £1,200 to £2,000 to be taken across the Channel
French police today held back from firing tear gas, probably because it would have instantly dispersed in the brisk winds coming in from the sea, and the migrants were anyway dispersed over such a wide area
There were already maybe 40 men aboard, sat on the sides, an unusually high proportion wearing bright-orange life jackets. To anyone concerned about health and safety, it was full.
But to the people smugglers, and indeed the migrants whose hearts are set on England, there was room to cram 40 more in the middle.
It loitered way off the beach for half an hour, with the riot police arriving and heading eastwards in front of the dunes in an apparent bid to head off any migrants, as yet out of sight, hoping to be picked up.
It soon became obvious it was a hopeless police effort, when the migrants suddenly emerged either side of the officers, in their four separate groups – one simply walking down the side of the canal to the sea from where many dinghies here emerge.
The other three groups of migrants came out of the dunes, one close to the canal and town of Gravelines on the west of the beach, the other two from the dunes to the east.
Many ran, but not those close to the canal – it is hard to run with a toddler on your shoulders, and some half a dozen men in this group had just that.
By shortly after 7am there were some 120 migrants at the shoreline or already in the sea.
Then the first taxi boat dinghy pulled close to two merged groups on the shore on the eastern end of the beach, and around two thirds of the 60 there climbed aboard.
It only took them a couple of minutes to board, but turned into a lengthy process as, amid significant waves, some were told to leave, and others manhandled the dinghy to point towards England. And all while the police watched from 50 yards away.
As that first boat headed for Dover, a second dinghy emerged from the end of the Gravelines' sea canal, fully laden – and without turning set off straight for England.
But then a third dinghy arrived from the west. Again, it had some 40 men already aboard, but chugged towards the western end of the beach, and collected around half of the 60 migrants waiting there, including some of the toddlers.
Two police officers watched from beside their Landcruiser, but the riot squad did not even run to get close.
Within minutes this third dinghy had followed the other two towards England, leaving several dozen migrants to trudge disappointedly back towards the bus stop, and bus, towards their camp a few miles away, having been told their boats were too full.
Afghan migrant Achmed, 28, was left standing on the sand with his son Mustafa, two, on his shoulders, and wife Moska by his side.
Achmed said: 'We were supposed to go to the UK today – I've been here four or five days, and it still hasn't happened.
'They said this boat was too full, with about 80 persons already. We are paying 2,000 Euros each.'
When will he try again?

Kemi Badenoch throws down gauntlet to Keir Starmer and demands no stealth taxes on Brits

KEMI Badenoch has thrown down the gauntlet to Keir Starmer on the economy demanding no stealth taxes on Brits. The Tory leader has written to the Prime Minister saying 'tax rises are a choice'. She has challenged him to repeat Chancellor Rachel Reeves' promise at the Budget last year not to extend the freeze on income tax and National Insurance thresholds. Failing to end the freeze as planned in 2028 would mean millions more Brits are forced into paying a higher rate of tax under fiscal drag. This is when people are pulled into higher income tax brackets as inflation pushes their wages up. It comes after a bombshell report said the Chancellor must find £50billion in her autumn Budget to keep the country's finances in check. She will have to raise taxes or cut spending to maintain her stated financial cushion of £9.9billion by the end of the decade, according to the National Institute of Economic and Social Research. At the Budget, Ms Reeves said: 'Extending the threshold freeze would hurt working people. "It would take more money out of their payslips. 'I am keeping every single promise on tax that I made in our manifesto, so there will be no extension of the freeze in income tax and national insurance thresholds.' Ms Badenoch asked the PM: 'I am writing to you to ask: does this remain government policy?' Kemi Badenoch pleads for Tories to give her more time just like Margaret Thatcher was given A Labour spokesperson said: 'We'll take no lectures from this failed Tory Party. "They crashed the economy which sent bills and mortgages rocketing, and left a £22 billion blackhole. 'Kemi Badenoch's next letter should be an apology to hard-pressed households for the Conservatives' role in hammering their family finances. 'Labour is the only party focused on creating a fairer Britain.' 1

French accused of making a mockery of ‘one-in, one-out' migrant deal after letting unsafe dinghy reach UK

FRENCH authorities have been accused of making a mockery of the 'one-in, one-out' migrant deal after letting an unsafe dinghy reach UK waters. A search-and-rescue ship was deployed near Calais on Thursday after a small boat was detected to be in distress. French rescuers recovered 15 migrants but let the rest carry on toward Britain. The RNLI picked up the others. It came two days after the new migrant swaps deal with Paris began. Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp said: 'The French should not be allowing a badly damaged boat to continue on its journey - this is incredibly dangerous. 'It is incredibly irresponsible for French authorities to allow these dangerous boats to cross. 'This makes a mockery of the migrant deal announced last week. 'If the French were serious about ending this dangerous and illegal route they would be stopping these boats at sea.' France's maritime prefect of the Channel insists their authorities cannot force migrants to be rescued due to the risk of them falling overboard if their dinghy capsizes. Chris Philp added: 'Labour's deal with France will allow 94 per cent of illegal arrivals to stay in the UK. Earlier this week, I went to the Channel to see for myself if the deal was deterring any crossings. It wasn't. 'We found two boats full of illegal immigrants in half an hour and they were escorted to UK waters by the French.' Loophole in PM's swap plan means the more bogus an asylum seeker is, the less chance we have of kicking them out 1

Passengers take the law into their own hands and tackle naked man who terrorised carriage on London's lawless Tube... weeks after mass brawl broke out at station

Irate commuters have turned on a passenger who dropped his trousers in a packed Tube carriage with children present and refused to pull them up again, the Daily Mail can reveal today. Police are investigating the incident on the District line in east London yesterday at 3.30pm. Yesterday the suspect, who was well dressed and wearing expensive headphones, caused panic when he began yelling after the eastbound train travelled between Upton Park and East Ham. He then dropped his trousers and put his belt around his neck. His bottom and genitals were on show, sparking anger and revulsion around him on the train. A passenger stood up quickly confronted him, gesticulating angrily. He politely and firmly told him: 'You need to get off the train.' But the flasher began yelling back: 'f*** off', repeatedly. The commuter said in response: 'What do you mean f*** off. You need to get off the f***ing train. Now. There are kids on here.' The train was busy with children who are on their summer holidays from school, so passengers took the law into their own hands. The man at the centre of the incident has been detained under the mental health act. It is yet another horrifying incident on the Tube, which is run by Sir Sadiq Khan 's Transport for London (TfL). Since he became Mayor in 2016, Tube crime rates have more than doubled, and today he has been accused of ignoring a manifesto pledge to maintain a 24-hour police front counter in every borough in the capital. Just last month a brawl broke out on the steps of a packed station - with a screaming toddler ending up on the floor in the chaos. A brawl started yesterday when the naked man refused to cover up. A group of men then surrounded him and repeatedly ordered him to 'pull your f***ing trousers up'. A scuffle then broke out. The naked man was trying hit them with his belt and the group was punching and kicking him. The men snatched away his belt and pinned him to the floor of the carriage while putting his arm behind his back, still with his trousers around his ankles. Passengers then yelled: 'We've got to get him off.' The man was then unceremoniously carried on to the Tube platform at East Ham and dumped to the floor. He was then pinned down as the commuters tried to alert staff. It appears an off duty police officer was on the train and performed an arrest. British Transport Police have said they are investigating. The suspect has been detained under the mental health act. A spokesman said: 'Officers were called to reports of a man exposing himself on the District Line at East Ham Underground station at around 3.30pm yesterday. 'The man had been assaulted by a number of other passengers and was initially arrested by an off duty officer, before being detained under the mental health act and taken to hospital where he remains. 'An investigation into the incident is ongoing.' The Daily Mail revealed London's most dangerous tube and train stations earlier this year. More than 4,100 crimes were recorded in 2024 at King's Cross St Pancras alone, one of the capital's busiest terminals. This is more than any other station on TfL's entire network. However, when taking passenger numbers into account, the most dangerous station is Poplar on the Docklands Light Railway (DLR), near Canary Wharf. Statistics collated by the British Transport Police (BTP) and TfL show 46 crimes were committed at the stop on the self-driving line last year. This equated to a rate of 58.7 offences for every million passengers. It was followed by Cockfosters, the northern terminus of the Piccadilly line, with 57.4 crimes per million passengers, and then King's Cross St Pancras with 51.4. Since Sir Sadiq became Mayor in 2016, Tube crime rates have more than doubled, from nine per every million journeys to more than 21 last March. Similarly, offences have risen on the Overground, DLR and Elizabeth line, which opened in 2022. The Mail's analysis comes after shock statistics laid bare the ever-worsening crime epidemic plaguing commuters - who have fallen victim to violent, racist, sexist and anti-Semitic assaults. One woman was even whipped in the face with a belt in a sickening attack at Green Park station last January. Liban Ahmed, handed a suspended 18-month prison sentence for the attack, was caught on film shouting as he moved up and down the platform, trying to avoid two men trying to grab him. In a fit of rage, the 27-year-old lashed out with his belt catching a woman trying to board the train. Mansoor Ahmed, 30, was last month jailed for 26 months and slapped on the sex offenders register for a decade after he sexually assaulted two women on the Tube. On September 6, 2020, Ahmed sexually assaulted a woman walking up the stairs at Gloucester Road station and just a few months later on November 20, he assaulted another woman walking down the steps at Charing Cross. Jaya Pathak, who campaigned for more action against sexual harassment on the tube after she was assaulted last year, told the Daily Mail that the situation has 'getting worse'. Ms Pathak, 27, was harassed by a man who continually starred at her for several stops, then 'pretended to be drunk' and rested his head on her shoulder on a Victoria line train to Walthamstow last April. 'He tried to make it look as if he was nodding off as an excuse to touch me, when I pushed him off, he laughed it off and kept starting again,' said Ms Pathak, who works in foreign policy. She said that the man even beckoned to her to get off the train at Blackhorse Road, the stop before she was due to get off at the end of the line. As the station was platform was virtually empty at the terminus, she felt unsafe as no staff could have been there to put a stop if things turned sour. Ms Pathak has called for TfL to staff emptier end-of-line stations as a deterrent to would-be sexual predators, who may not act if someone else is watching. Homeless man Brwa Shorsh, 24, pushed an innocent stranger, Tadeusz Potoczek, onto the tracks at Oxford Circus underground station just seconds before the train pulled in, in February 2024. Mr Potoczek had been hurrying home to catch a flight and was looking at the arrivals board when he was attacked in what prosecutor Sam Barker described as 'the thing of nightmares'. The Kurdish migrant had claimed he'd targeted the 60-year-old in 'revenge' after thinking Mr Potoczek had given him a 'dirty look'. Fortunately Mr Potoczek, a postman, missed the electrified rail and was helped back onto the platform by a passer-by who rushed to his aid. The driver had put on the emergency brake and his train was just four seconds away from hitting the victim. Shorsh, who has accumulated convictions of assault and indecent acts since arriving in Britain in 2019, had denied trying to kill his victim and claimed he did not know a train was arriving at the time. In July last year that year he was found guilty of attempted murder by a jury at Inner London Crown Court after just 32 minutes of deliberations and he was jailed for life with a minimum term of eight years. A Jewish man wearing a kippah suffered a display of vile anti-Semitism on the Northern Line last March, when a vaping passenger said: 'Your religion kills Muslims.' The victim filmed the argument, where the passenger said: 'You've done a lot... You're wearing the hat.' The man, who shared the footage with the Campaign Against Antisemitism accused the vaper of being anti-Semitic. Across all Underground, Overground, DLR and Elizabeth line stations (excluding stations outside the London fare zones), 38,000 crimes were reported to the BTP in 2024, according to their data. This is the equivalent of 104 per day. Data includes crimes committed at the stations themselves and those committed on trains either at or arriving into that station. Terminus stations can be over-represented in the on-train crime figures because if the exact location is unknown, it may be recorded as having happened at the end of the line. After King's Cross St Pancras, the fourth most dangerous Tube stop is Epping, Essex, the north eastern terminus of the Central line, with a rate of 49. Fifth is Upminster Bridge, east London, on the District Line with a rate of 48.6. The major London terminals of Finsbury Park come in sixth and seventh with rates of 46.1 (885 total crimes) and 36.5 (1,825 total crimes), respectively. However, several Elizabeth line stations outside the main London fare zones (1-9) — Taplow (76 per 1m), Twyford (71), Burnham (62), Reading (60) — have even higher rates. We have excluded these stations and all outside the London fare zones from the rankings, although you can still see them on the map. Daily Mail analysis suggests that the most dangerous line on TfL's network is the Overground's Lioness Line, which runs between Euston and Watford Junction, with a rate of 28 per 1m passengers. A total of 2,533 crimes were recorded at stations on this line, which services around 90m people a year. Next is the Victoria line with 26 per 1m (11,700 total crimes) and the Metropolitan with 20 per 1m (7,000 total). The safest line in London is the Docklands Light Railway (DLR), with a crime rate of 8.3 per million passengers, followed by the Suffragette (8.7) and Jubilee (9.7). These figures have been calculated by adding together the total crimes and footfall for each station which serves each line, then using those numbers to calculate the rate per 1m passengers.
