THE ECONOMIC TIMES Samvardhana Motherson Samvardhana Motherson International Ltd (SAMIL) has said the recently announced US tariffs on imports from India don't have a material impact on its operations. According to the company's latest investor presentation, exports from India to the US stood at less than USD 10 million in the first quarter of FY26.The company explained that most of its external contracts are structured on an ex-works basis, under which customers bear the shipping and import costs. For the smaller portion of contracts where this is not the case, Motherson is implementing mitigation measures, including exploring alternative supply chain solutions.A large part of the company's sales to US customers already comply with the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), shielding them from the new tariff regime. For non-USMCA compliant products, discussions are underway with customers to pass on the additional costs, though this process is expected to involve some time lag.In its Q1 FY26 results, Motherson reported consolidated revenues of ₹30,212 crore, compared with ₹28,868 crore in the same quarter last year. However, EBITDA margins slipped to 8.2% from 9.6%, which the company attributed to structural challenges in Europe, foreign exchange volatility, and start-up costs related to new projects.Shares of the auto components manufacturer recovered from early losses to rise as much as 4.45% on Wednesday, August 13, after management reassured investors in its post-earnings statement that the tariffs imposed by the Donald Trump administration would not significantly affect its operations.
'While uncertainties in the business environment persist, it also offers inorganic opportunities for growth,' said Vivek Chaand Sehgal, Chairman of Motherson.

ED questions Suresh Raina; records statement on alleged links with illegal betting app 1xBet
NEW DELHI: The Enforcement Directorate on Wednesday questioned former international cricketer Suresh Raina and recorded his statement under provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) as part of its probe into a case linked to sports betting app (application) named , sources said. The 38-year-old sportsperson had arrived at the ED headquarters here at 11 am and was seen interacting with CISF personnel and Enforcement Directorate (ED) staff outside the agency's premises. The sources said that the agency's officials got his statement recorded under provisions of the PMLA as part of the investigation linked to a sports betting app (application) named 1xBet. Raina is understood to have been linked to the app through certain endorsements and the ED probe team wants to understand his links with this app, any endorsement fee earned and the mode of communication between the two parties, the sources said. It is to be noted that the ED had recently called representatives of Google and Meta for questioning as part of this probe. It also conducted multi-state searches on Tuesday in connection with a similar investigation against an online betting app named Parimatch. The agency is probing multiple such cases involving illegal betting apps that are alleged to have duped numerous people and investors worth crores of rupees or have evaded a huge amount of taxes. According to estimates by market analysis firms and probe agencies, there are about 22 crore Indian users in various such online betting apps out of which half (about 11 crore) are regular users. The online betting app market in India is worth over USD 100 billion which is growing at the rate of 30 percent, according to a reported assessment made by experts. More to these, the government, while responding to a question in Parliament, informed that it has issued 1,524 orders from 2022 till June 2025 to block online betting and gambling platforms.

The tactic applies only to select shipments already under investigation, the sources said. The trackers are often hidden in packaging and, in some cases, inside the servers themselves. Some are roughly the size of a smartphone. The US Commerce Department's Bureau of Industry and Security, Homeland Security Investigations, and the FBI are typically involved, the report says. They are used to detect whether AI chips are being sent to destinations under US export restrictions. Reuters report quotes officials who say the move is part of broader efforts to enforce curbs on China's access to advanced American semiconductors. The devices, the sources claim, can help build cases against individuals and companies that violate U.S. export rules. Location trackers have long been used by US law enforcement to monitor exports such as airplane parts. In recent years, they have been deployed to combat the illegal diversion of semiconductors. How chip makers responded Super Micro said it does not disclose its 'security practices and policies' and would not comment on tracking actions. Dell, on the other hand, said it was 'not aware of a US Government initiative to place trackers in its product shipments.' US-China tech tensions US, a leader in the global AI chip supply chain, has recently tightened export controls on China from 2022 to limit its military development. Similar restrictions apply to Russia. Proposals in the White House and Congress have suggested requiring location verification technology in chips to prevent diversion. China has criticized the restrictions as an attempt to suppress its growth. Last month, its cyberspace regulator called in Nvidia to discuss concerns over alleged 'backdoors' in its chips, a claim Nvidia has denied. Some Chinese resellers have reportedly said they inspect diverted shipments for trackers before delivery due to the risk of them being embedded.
