Sky Content Chief Says 'We Had an Amazing Bubble' in Production
The state of U.K. TV production 'has been really tough, and anybody who's been in production these days would echo that,' Cécile Frot-Coutaz, the CEO of Sky Studios and chief content officer of Sky, owned by Comcast, told the Media & Telecoms 2025 & Beyond Conference in London on Tuesday.
'I think it's been tough for a number of reasons,' she shared at the event, organized by Deloitte and Enders Analysis, . 'Less has been commissioned, although I think if you look back over a period of 10 [or 15] years, I'm not sure there's less today…. So, you know, we had an amazing bubble. Everybody got used to the bubble, and obviously now we're sort of coming back down to volumes that are more akin to those that were experienced 15 years ago.'

Also, 'there's been a funding issue, because the U.S. hasn't been co-producing British content nearly in the same way, or actually not at all, potentially,' the Sky top executive added.
But she also had a silver lining to tout. 'What we're seeing is [that] Europe is actually coming into some shows. We've seen that on some of our own programming. So you have to be very entrepreneurial these days when looking at how to get things financed, unless you're a goal player like Netflix.'
About Sky's content output strategy, she highlighted: 'We were never a volume player. So actually, what we've been doing has been very consistent and very steady, and because we're part of the Comcast group, we're able to be flexible on the funding model.'
She concluded by predicting that 'looking forward, I think things will settle again. Hopefully, the U.S. will start to come back online.'
She made the comments during a panel discussion that also featured Larry Tanz, vp, content, Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) at Netflix, Sarah Rose, president of U.K. broadcaster Channel 5 and U.K. regional lead at Channel 5 owner Paramount Global, and Wayne Garvie, president of Sony Pictures Television. The panel discussed commissioning trends and industry opportunities and challenges.
Tuesday's conference also featured top executives from the likes of the Walt Disney Co., U.K. public broadcaster BBC, streaming giant Netflix, and Comcast-owned Sky.

It seemingly takes a village to put together a cheer team, especially one as iconic as this one. Tom Cruise Sets Guinness World Record For Death-Defying 'Mission: Impossible' Stunt
Tom Cruise's quest to become America's most death-defying stuntman continues to pay off. The Oscar-nominated actor has spent the last couple of decades primarily focused on his action-packed 'Mission: Impossible' films — and just set a Guinness World Record for one of the most daring stunts in the series. The British institution announced Thursday that Cruise now holds the title for 'most burning parachute jumps by an individual' for leaping out of a helicopter 16 times before lighting his chute on fire in the latest franchise installment, 'The Final Reckoning.' 'Tom doesn't just play action heroes — he is an action hero!' wrote Craig Glenday, editor-in-chief at Guinness World Records. 'A large part of his success can be chalked up to his absolute focus on authenticity and pushing the boundaries of what a leading man can do.' Cruise and Paramount Pictures both posted behind-the-scenes footage of the stunt on social media. Cruise and director Christopher McQuarrie can be seen plotting out logistics with the stunt coordinators and acknowledging the danger before Cruise attempts his jump. The stunt was filmed in the Drakensberg, South Africa. 'What I'm going to do is, I'm going to be deploying,' says Cruise in the footage, shot during a production meeting on location. 'If this is twisted while it's burning, I'm going to be spinning and burning. I have to kick out of the twist and then ignite within 10 seconds.' The result onscreen shows Cruise's character, Ethan Hunt, forced to cut the burning nylon tatters free to deploy a reserve chute at the last second. The stunt was shot with a chute that was soaked in fuel to light on fire. Over the course of his films, Cruise has run along the exterior of the 163-floor Burj Khalifa in Dubai ('Ghost Protocol'), harnessed himself to an airplane during takeoff ('Rogue Nation') and base-jumped into a canyon after riding off of a cliff ('Dead Reckoning'). 'Tom is no stranger to record breaking,' Glenday wrote Thursday. Cruise does indeed hold another Guinness title for 'most consecutive $100-million-grossing movies' for an actor, for the 11 films between 'Jack Reacher' (2012) and 'Final Reckoning.' The latter hit theaters in late May and has grossed nearly $400 million worldwide. In both instances, she was going through a divorce. "I was coming in my driveway and somebody ran up to me," Shepherd, 58, recalls. "I was like, 'Hi.' He's like, 'You're being served.' Then I remember I was at the Essence Festival and somebody came up right before I was supposed to go on stage: 'You're being served.' " Shepherd was married to actor Jeff Tarpley from 2001 to 2010. In 2011, she wed screenwriter Lamar Sally. They divorced in 2015. "I was in arbitration going through a divorce and (the lawyers) were just coming at me: 'You have to pay this amount,' " she says. "I was just like, 'I don't have it. I'm not working. I've been let go from 'The View.' I'm unemployed.' " Shepherd refers to herself as "spiritual" but not "religious." Distraught over the proceedings, Shepperd excused herself to use the restroom. In that moment, prayer helped her get through. "A legal secretary put her hand on my shoulder," she says, noting that she began to feel calm. "She started praying. So for me, you touch me and you start praying, I stop whatever I'm doing." Shepherd plays a calming presence in "Straw," directed and written by Tyler Perry. In the film, Janiyah (Taraji P. Henson) is a single mother dealing with one traumatic event after another, until she finds herself in the middle of a bank robbery. Detective Raymond (Teyana Taylor) can relate to Janiyah's stress in more than one way as she attempts to diffuse the situation. Nicole (Shepherd) is the branch manager of the bank. As she comes to realize Janiyah's struggles, Nicole forms a bond with her that lasts right until the film's finish. "Sisterhood is strong," Shepherd says of the characters' bond. The two "connected through motherhood, that thing that women have, and (Nicole) just wanted to help (Janiyah) win."
