Annabelle doll handler dies unexpectedly

The handler of the doll that inspired the horror film series Annabelle has suddenly died, according to local media. Dan Rivera, 54, passed away unexpectedly in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania – the site of a major US civil war battle – on Sunday. He was the lead investigator for the New England Society for Psychic Research (NESPR) and had been on a US tour with the original Annabelle doll. 'It's with deep sadness that (we) share the sudden passing of our close friend and partner, Dan Rivera. We are heartbroken and still processing this loss,' a statement on NESPR'S Facebook page stated. 'Dan truly believed in sharing his experiences and educating people on the paranormal. 'His kindness and passion touched everyone who knew him.' The Annabelle doll first became widely known following the 2013 horror movie The Conjuring, based on the work of paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren. A prequel, simply called Annabelle, premiered in 2014. Two further Annabelle films have since been released. The real and reportedly possessed Annabelle doll, which is from the Warrens' Occult Museum in Connecticut, was on display as part of the Devils on the Run Tour around the US. According to local newspaper the Hanover Evening S un, emergency services were called to a hotel in Gettysburg on Sunday to attend to Mr Rivera. His cause of death is still being determined. On Saturday, Mr Rivera spoke to event-goers in Gettysburg about the fame of the doll. 'I want you guys to have a good time,' he told the sold out group gathered at the Soldiers National Orphanage, according to the Evening Sun, before he led them into the room where Annabelle was in its case. He told the crowd that the case was constructed of three crosses and had a stain which included holy water to 'protect them' from the doll. According to the museum it is housed in, the doll was given to a woman in 1970 who reported it could move independently. A psychic is said to have told them it was possessed by the spirit of a deceased child called Annabelle. Its behaviour then reportedly became malicious. It eventually found its way to the Warrens. There is also plenty of scepticism over the claims made by the Warrens regarding the doll. Last month, a minor panic occurred when it was claimed the Annabelle doll had vanished while on tour in New Orleans. During that period, there was a prison breakout and plantation fire which some linked to the doll. But the Warren Occult Museum said the doll was 'safely back' in Connecticut. 'The doll was never out of our control,' the museum said in a statement. 'We take extreme precautions when handling or transporting the doll.'

American Idol boss, husband executed in their $6.9 million home in gory double murder

A boss on American Idol and her husband were executed in a suspected double murder inside their $US4.5 million ($6.9 million) Los Angeles home, cops said. Robin Kaye, an award-winning music supervisor for the hit competition show, was found slaughtered along with her husband, Thomas Deluca, after an apparent break-in at their house in the upscale Encino neighbourhood, a Los Angeles Police Department source told TMZ. LAPD officers found the couple's bodies during a welfare check after they had not been heard from in four days. Both victims had what appeared to be gunshot wounds to the head. Officers also found blood in the entryway and a broken window, which the killer possibly used to get inside. Aerial footage of the house from ABC 7 showed what looked like a smashed sliding glass door. The cops had already been called to the house last Thursday after neighbours spotted a suspicious person hopping the fence, but officers found no evidence of foul play. 'We didn't see or hear anything. My renter called 911 on Thursday because she saw somebody hopping the fence,' neighbour Amee Faggen told ABC 7. Kaye had worked on American Idol for 15 seasons, according to her IMDB page, and won several Guild of Music Supervisors Awards. She worked as the music supervisor on Idol for at least 15 seasons, and she won multiple Guild of Music Supervisors Awards for her work on the show. She also worked on Lip Sync Battle, Miss USA and Miss Universe, among other shows. The couple's house last sold for around $US4.5 million in 2023, according to Zillow.

Beloved game Uno is set to debut in one Las Vegas casinos with plans for more, but there's a catch

The stakes have well and truly been raised for a simple game of Uno. The popular family game played by people as young as seven will make its controversial debut in Sin City on Friday in a wild shift from the dining table to the dealer's circle. Game owners Mattel have given the green light to a 'Uno Social Club' above the gaming floors at The Palms Casino in Las Vegas off the Nevada strip, with plans to expand to more gambling locations. Slamming down the cards in frustration after copping a draw four won't exactly be the classiest move at the decked out venue, with players treated to dedicated game hosts shuffling the decks — ensuring no cheating. The room will also feature a private bowling alley, pool table and plush lounges. Different variations of the classic game will be on offer on different tables from July 18-20 and there'll be no children in sight at the exclusive event, with only participants over 21 allowed. But there's a catch. Guests wanting to gamble on the games, despite the venue, won't be allowed. The decision is part of Mattel's main objective to provide an 'elevated social experience' at casinos instead of real money games. 'We created Uno Social Clubs to reimagine what game night can be—bringing people together for real-world fun, connection, and a bit of friendly competition,' said Ray Adler, Vice President and Global Head of Games at Mattel. 'The Uno Social Club in Las Vegas is just the beginning, and we're excited to see how these new experiences inspire players to show up, play hard, and make unforgettable memories.' Uno is also not an approved game at gaming venues and any gambling would be considered a violation in the eyes of the Nevada Gaming Commission. Entry to the event was based on the winners of a social media hashtag competition run by Mattel earlier in the year. Influencers were invited to test out the space recently, but as per the casino rules were not allowed to place bets on games. '(G)ood thing there was no betting,' influencer itszuose, who boasts 134,000 Instagram followers said, 'bc I would've lost a lot of money.' The thought of the wildly popular game enjoyed by children and adults alike arriving at casinos is a scary thought for some. Despite a strict ban on betting on the games, there are fears it's now just one step away. 'Vegas just trying to ruin lives,' one Instagram user said. 'Losin 500k cz u (sic) forgot to say Uno.' 'If y'all thought gambling addiction was bad now, when this is official gambling rate might go up especially for average people,' another said. 'What's next? Coin toss?' Earlier this year Yaamava Resort and Casino in California duped users online as part of an April fool's joke by announcing a real-money Uno table game at their venue, with tongue-in-cheek warnings to 'please use Draw 4's responsibly.' But the main question on everyone's mind: 'Can you stack +4 on +4?' One thing for sure, some clarity on the hugely divisive rules will be much needed ahead of play.
