Former UNC pitcher named amongst ESPN's Top 50 MLB Trade Deadline candidates

USA Today22-07-2025
Don't be shocked to see this former Diamond Heel on a new MLB team come August.
Athletes will struggle, even at the professional level. Just ask Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Zac Gallen, the former UNC standout who is mired in the worst season of his MLB career.
Gallen, who finished top fiv ive in NL CY Young voting for the 2023 MLB season, currently sports a 7-10 win-loss record with a 5.40 earned run average. Despite striking out 110 batters, good enough for 30th amongst all pitchers, Gallen just gave up six runs in a Saturday loss to the sub-.500 Los Angeles Angels.
Sometimes, players just need a change of scenery to rediscover their talent. Such could be the case for Gallen, whom ESPN recently named a Top 50 Trade Deadline Candidate.
"Gallen was excellent for the past three seasons but now, in a contract year, is posting career-worst numbers in almost every category," Kiley McDaniel and Jeff Passan wrote. "His stuff looks similar, but he's allowing much more damage when hitters make contact. That said, his strikeout-to-walk ratio is back to normal in his past five starts, at 29-to-5, despite a 6.04 ERA in that span. Diamondbacks general manager Mike Hazen said the team does not plan to deal away players at the deadline, but if Arizona doesn't make a run, it could reap a huge return with all its impending free agents."
Arizona is in a comfortable spot itself, sitting at .500 and eight games out of first place in the NL West, with a deficit even closer in the wild card race. I'm sure the Diamondbacks want the former Diamond Heel for their playoff push – and they have until July 31 to decide.
Gallen compiled a 14-13 win-loss record at North Carolina, compiling a 3.36 ERA and striking out 231 batters. Gallen was part of Arizona's World Series run in 2023, starting Game 1 as its staff ace, then followed that season up with a 14-6 campaign in 2024.
Will Gallen stay put in the desert or join a World Series contender? You'll know by Thursday, July 31, better known as the trade deadline.

Tigers bolster bullpen at trade deadline, acquiring Kyle Finnegan from Nats and Paul Sewald from Guardians

DETROIT — The Detroit Tigers are making moves, hoping to increase their chances of winning a World Series for the first time in more than four decades. Detroit acquired Kyle Finnegan from Washington for two prospects, a person familiar with the deal told The Associated Press just hours before the trade deadline on Thursday. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the trade wasn't announced. The 33-year-old Finnegan was an All-Star in 2024, but his velocity has been down this season. He has 20 saves with a 4.38 ERA in 2025. Detroit added Paul Sewald earlier in the day, giving the rebuilding Cleveland Guardians cash for the right-handed reliever. The AL Central-leading Tigers won their fourth straight game with newly acquired starting pitcher Chris Paddack on Wednesday, two days after he was added in a trade with the Minnesota Twins. Detroit has nearly a double-digit game lead in the division and is vying with Toronto and Houston for the best record in the league. The Tigers, trying to take advantage of ace Tarik Skubal and a balanced lineup, are aiming for their first World Series title since 1984. Detroit earned a spot in the playoffs last year for the first time in the decade after a late-season surge. In the trade for Finnegan, the Tigers sent minor league pitchers Josh Randall and R.J. Sales, Detroit's third and 10th round draft picks from 2024, respectively, to Washington. The 35-year-old Sewald is eligible to return from the injured list on Sunday after being shut down with a strained right shoulder, but he isn't expected to pitch until September. He is 1-1 with a 4.70 ERA in 18 games this season, averaging more than one strikeout each inning. Detroit opens a three-game series Friday night at Philadelphia.

Athletics acquire Leo De Vries, 3 other prospects from Padres for Mason Miller, J.P. Sears

The Athletics traded Mason Miller and J.P. Sears to the San Diego Padres for one of Major League Baseball's top prospects, Leo De Vries, the teams announced on Thursday, hours before the trade deadline. Miller, 26, set an A's rookie record last season with 28 saves and was named an American League All-Star. This season, he's posted a 3.76 ERA while collecting 20 saves in 38 relief appearances. The hard-throwing right-hander is expected to bolster the Padres' bullpen, which leads all of MLB with 36 saves and already has three All-Stars in Adrian Morejon, Jason Adam and Robert Suarez. The A's are also sending left-handed starter Sears to the Padres. Sears has a 4.95 ERA with a 7-9 record for the A's. He's allowed the second-most home runs in the majors but has not missed a start in the last three seasons. In return, the A's are getting 18-year-old shortstop De Vries, the Padres' top prospect and third overall prospect in MLB, according to So far in 2025, De Vries has batted .245 with 8 home runs and 46 RBI for the High-A Fort Wayne Tin Caps. The switch-hitter played in the Futures Game earlier this month and has played in 157 professional games in two seasons. De Vries has only played shortstop, a position where Jacob Wilson just became the second rookie to start an All-Star game at. Along with De Vries, the A's are getting some young right-handed arms in Henry Baez, Braden Nett and Eduarniel Núñez. Nett was ranked as the Padres' third-best prospect, posting a 3.39 ERA in 17 starts for Double-A San Antonio this season. The 23-year-old has a career 3.78 ERA in 182.2 innings with 209 strikeouts in the minors. Baez was ranked 13th in the Padres system with a 4-2 record, 1.96 ERA in 20 starts this season. The 22-year-old earned the Padres' minor league pitcher of the year award last year. Núñez is the only player the A's are receiving to see big league action this year. He appeared in four games for San Diego when he allowed two runs on four hits and four walks across 4.2 innings. Across Double-A and Triple-A this season, he's thrown 35 innings, striking out 56 batters and collecting seven saves.
