Tim David has become a top T20 player, excelling for Australia and Royal Challengers Bangalore. He scored 265 runs in four innings for Australia this year, averaging 88.33.
As Australia faces South Africa in the T20I decider in Cairns, all eyes will be on the powerful batting of Aussie middle-order hitter Tim David. This year, David has emerged as one of the world's best T20 players. His performances, whether hitting fours and sixes for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) during their maiden Indian Premier League (IPL) title win or rebuilding Australia's innings with his fearless sixes, demonstrate a commendable balance of destruction and maturity. Each hit showcases his ability to combine audacity with calculated risks.
David was a crucial part of RCB's batting lineup, especially during the death overs. He contributed significantly to the team's success, scoring 187 valuable runs in nine innings at an average of 62.33 and an impressive strike rate of 185.14. A standout performance was his unbeaten 50 off 26 balls, including five fours and three sixes, in a rain-affected match at Chinnaswamy Stadium. Despite RCB being reduced to 95/9, David's efforts kept them competitive.
How Has Tim David Reinvented Himself?
In the death overs, David scored 126 runs from 62 balls at a strike rate of 203.22, with nine fours and eleven sixes. His boundary ratio was 3.1 balls per boundary, and he played just 21 dot balls, maintaining an average of 42.00. This year, he has been exceptional for Australia, scoring 265 runs in four innings at an average of 88.33 and a strike rate of 212.00, including a century and two fifties. Within 125 balls, he smashed 15 fours and 27 sixes for the Aussies.
Since switching from Singapore to Australian colours in 2022, David has primarily batted at number six, scoring 544 runs in 27 innings with an average of 28.63 and a strike rate of over 172, including two fifties and a top score of 64*. This year, his promotion to the upper middle-order has produced impressive numbers, with all his T20I runs coming from batting at number five (three times) and four (once).
Against the West Indies, David was promoted to number five in the fourth T20I to help chase 215. With Australia at 61/3 near the end of the powerplay, David didn't falter even when Cameron Green fell at 87. He raced to a 16-ball fifty and then scored his first T20 century in just 37 balls, including six fours and eleven sixes at a strike rate of 275.67, making it Australia's fastest T20I century. David's aggressive batting helped Australia achieve a clean sweep by chasing 174 runs in the final T20I, where he scored 30 from 12 balls.
In the home series against South Africa, David faced a challenging situation with Australia at 30/3. He counter-attacked, scoring 40 runs in 16 balls with Cameron Green, providing a crucial boost. Despite Australia slipping to 75/6, David's 52-ball 83, including four boundaries and eight sixes, ensured a fighting total of 178, leading to a 17-run victory.
In the second T20I against South Africa, chasing 219, David was promoted to number four. He scored a 24-ball 50, pushing Australia past 100 runs before falling in the 10th over. Though Australia fell short by 53 runs, David's performance set a platform for the remaining players.
David's prowess as a death-overs finisher is well-known. Since 2020, he has scored 1,954 runs in 121 innings at an average of 28.74 and a strike rate of over 197, the most runs in death overs (17-20) by any batter in this period. This year, he ranks among the world's elite, having played 29 T20s, scoring 699 runs at an average of 53.76 and a strike rate of 183.76, with a century and five fifties.
He joins an exclusive group of four other stars with similar achievements this year: Pakistan's Sahibzada Farhan, South Africa's Dewald Brevis, Jos Buttler, and India's Suryakumar Yadav. David has the second-best average and strike rate among them.
In fact, he is only the third player in T20 history to score over 500 runs in a calendar year with an average of 50-plus and a strike rate of 180-plus, alongside Kieron Pollard and Cameron White. With 5,604 career runs in 286 matches and 257 innings at an average of 31.13 and a strike rate of 162.62, Tim David continues to be a major force in T20 leagues worldwide.
Will we witness more of David's brilliance this year?

Shubman Gill unlikely for Asia Cup squad as Ajit Agarkar all set to reward Shreyas Iyer: Report

Ajit Agarkar and the rest of the All India Men's Senior Selection Committee will convene on Tuesday, August 19, to pick the squad for the upcoming Asia Cup. Suryakumar Yadav has cleared the fitness Test and is all set to lead India in the eight-team tournament, beginning September 9. There are several major decisions in front of the selectors. However, the biggest question is whether there can be a place for Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal. The selectors will pick the Asia Cup squad on Tuesday, August 19. (AFP) Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma have made the most of their chances in the shortest format. Hence, there are no grounds for dropping them. However, Shubman Gill (Test captain) and Jaiswal are two of the biggest names in Indian cricket right now. Hence, it needs to be seen whether the selectors are willing to take a brave call and keep the duo out for now. According to a report in Sportstar, the selectors are all set to make a bold call and leave Gill and Jaiswal out of the squad for the Asia Cup. Ajit Agarkar is all set to retain the core group that has excelled under Gambhir in T20Is recently. The Asia Cup ends on September 28, and the first Test against the West Indies begins on October 2. Considering the turnaround period, the selectors are likely to keep Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal fresh for the red-ball assignments. The same report states that Shreyas Iyer and Jitesh Sharma are likely to earn call-ups into the Asia Cup squad. In IPL 2025, Jitesh Sharma impressed one and all with his big-hitting exploits for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), who won their maiden title. Also Read: Shubman Gill for Asia Cup may look tempting, but it could severely backfire on Team India in more ways than one Shreyas Iyer led Punjab Kings to the IPL final, but they fell short against RCB in the summit clash. Neither Jitesh nor Shreyas has played in T20Is since Gautam Gambhir took over as the head coach. Shreyas last played a T20I in December 2023, while Jitesh made his last appearance in January 2024. Why pick Shreyas Iyer? According to the report, the selectors want an experienced middle-order batter in the conditions of the UAE for the Asia Cup. Hence, Shreyas Iyer is all but set to be picked. It must be mentioned that the right-handed batter played a crucial role in the UAE in the Champions Trophy 2025, which India eventually won after beating New Zealand in the summit clash. If Shreyas is indeed picked, then one between Shivam Dube and Rinku Singh might have to be dropped. Both Dube and Rinku were part of India's squad for the five-match T20I series against England in January 2025. Suryakumar Yadav will be attending the selection meeting for the Asia Cup. The tournament will begin on September 9 with India playing their first match on September 10 against the UAE. India are placed in Group A alongside Pakistan, UAE and Oman.

Ponting's clarity of instruction helped me play with more consistency, says PBKS opener Prabhsimran Singh

Prabhsimran Singh played a key role in Punjab Kings' run to the final in the IPL this year, leading the run-scoring charts for his side. The 25-year-old opener had his best season yet and set a new record for the most runs by an uncapped player in an edition with 549 runs. The opener credited head coach Ricky Ponting for his incredible run in the IPL and said he worked on playing long innings. 'I feel most of the credit goes to Ricky Ponting. He gave me clarity. Ahead of the season, when a youngster has that clarity, he can focus completely on enhancing his game,' said Prabhsimran, who is in Chennai with the Punjab team to take part in the Buchi Babu tournament that starts on Monday. ALSO READ | Buchi Babu Trophy 2025 Squads: Full list of players and teams 'This year, I felt my consistency was better. In previous years, I would play well, but would get out for 30 or 35. I worked a lot on that this year. This year, I tried to take up more responsibility, and I got the results.' The wicket-keeper batter also formed an effective partnership alongside Priyansh Arya and said the duo worked together before the season to understand each other. 'Before the season, we heard that everyone was saying that both are young uncapped openers and questioned it. The captain and coach gave us clarity at the start of the tournament itself that we would be opening. We would train in nets and in practice games, and from there we just matched,' explained Prabhsimran. Looking ahead to the new season, the Punjab opener is hoping to build on his IPL exploits. 'Every player, when he starts playing cricket, it's his dream to play for India. For now, let's see, I'm just waiting. I don't think a lot about all that, I'm just focusing on my game, and if I continue to do well, then hopefully god will give me an opportunity soon.'
