The French automaker, which had warned last week of weaker than expected June sales volumes, said its second-quarter sales were down 0.1 per cent, despite a raft of new vehicle launches.
That compared with growth of 2.8 per cent in the first quarter.
"Throughout the first half of the year, we have seen increasingly fierce competition between players in the European
commercial vehicle market
," said Ivan Segal, global sales and operations director for the Renault brand, which represents 70 per cent of the French automaker's sales.
"Demand is difficult, we sense an economic context full of uncertainty, certainly leading companies to postpone a certain number of purchases," he told reporters.
Renault is currently being run by its finance chief Duncan Minto as it searches for a new chief executive to replace Luca de Meo, who departed this month.
The company, which will publish its full half-year figures on July 31, also last week revised down its full-year operating margin and free cash flow forecasts.
While Renault brand car sales increased by 8.4 per cent in the first half, thanks in particular to the Clio, a best-seller in Europe, sales of highly profitable vans and light commercial vehicles, which make up a fifth of Renault sales volumes, fell by 29 per cent.
The decline was exacerbated by an unfavourable base effect and an update to its product offering.
Sales of Renault brand electric vehicles jumped 57 per cent, however, outperforming a market that grew by 25 per cent, thanks to the success of the R5 in France, Germany and Spain.
The A290, the new electric model under Renault's Alpine premium sports brand, helped the brand post an 85 per cent jump in registrations in the first half of 2025.
Segal said he expects the Renault brand to regain market share in commercial vehicles in the second half.
He added overall growth would be "in line" with the first half while the brand would see double-digit growth outside Europe.
Renault generates more than 70 per cent of its sales in Europe, which has protected it from the trade disruptions linked to U.S. tariffs but makes it vulnerable to any slowdown on the continent where competition from new Chinese entrants is rising.
Seeking higher growth markets, the Renault brand has been rolling out new models in Latin America, Turkey, Morocco and Korea, which resulted in a 16.3 per cent increase in sales outside Europe in the first half of the year.

After being closed for renovation for nearly two years, the century-old Roshanara Club reopened its doors to the residents of the Capital on Sunday. Renovated and restored by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA), the heritage club now boasts of revamped sport facilities as well as modern wellness and banquet areas, among others. The club, spread across 22 acres, was taken over by the DDA for renovation on September 29, 2023. This was after L-G V K Saxena – in his maiden visit to the club on January 12, 2023 – noticed that the 'majestic structure was lying in a dilapidated state with poor maintenance with a crumbling facade', the DDA said in a statement. Saxena, who unveiled the revamped club, said, 'It is a big moment for us, as this heritage club has been restored and relaunched. I congratulate the people of Delhi on this occasion. Delhi is a city of heritage and in the last three years, a number of heritage (sites) have been restored and we are committed towards (restoring) more in the future.' The club was established on August 15, 1922 as an elite recreational and social retreat for the Britishers residing in the area around present-day Delhi University and Civil Lines. It was named after Begum Roshanara, the daughter of Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, who was buried in the neighbouring Roshanara Bagh. The club is considered the birthplace of the Board of Control for Cricket in India, which was formed in 1928 when Indian cricket administrators gathered at Roshanara Club. 'Particular attention was given to the preservation of the club's architectural legacy. The century-old façade, including the European-style doors and windows, Mangalore-tiled roof, and intricate wooden trusses, have all been carefully restored. Antique chandeliers and original furnishings were refurbished and reupholstered to revive their classic charm,' the DDA said in its statement. It added that indoor facilities at the club now include a main lounge, card and billiards rooms, banquet area, bar and dining hall, library, gym, squash and badminton courts, a swimming pool, and a wellness area with yoga, sauna, and steam rooms. Outdoor amenities include clay, grass, and synthetic tennis courts, cricket grounds, a mini football zone, basketball area, and a jogging track. The DDA said civil works involved anti-termite treatment, waterproofing, marble polishing, wooden flooring repairs, and renovations to sanitary facilities. Important upgrades were made to the squash and badminton courts, swimming pool, and various places in the club house building. While electrical systems were overhauled, AC cooling was enhanced by providing requisite units, ducting and wiring were concealed, and damaged fittings, switches and light fixtures were replaced. Donald Trump, EU's Ursula von der Leyen to meet on Sunday to clinch trade deal
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is set to meet U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday to clinch a trade deal for Europe that would likely see a 15% baseline tariff on most EU goods, but end months of uncertainty for EU companies. Before the meeting, expected at 1530 GMT on Trump's golf course in Turnberry, western Scotland, U.S. and EU teams were in final talks on tariffs for crucial sectors like cars, steel, aluminium or pharmaceuticals. U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick flew to Scotland on Saturday and EU Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic arrived on Sunday morning. 'We're cautiously optimistic that there will be a deal reached,' said a Trump administration official, who spoke on condition of anonymity. 'But it's not over till it's over.' Ambassadors of EU governments, on a weekend trip to Greenland organised by the Danish presidency of the EU, held a teleconference with EU Commission officials on Sunday to agree on the amount of leeway von der Leyen would have in the talks. In case there is no deal and the U.S. imposes 30% tariffs from August 1, the EU has prepared counter-tariffs on 93 billion euros ($109 billion) of U.S. goods. EU diplomats have said a deal would likely include a broad 15% tariff on EU goods imported into the U.S., mirroring the U.S.-Japan trade deal, along with a 50% tariff on European steel and aluminium for which there could be export quotas. The EU deal would be a huge prize, given that the U.S. and EU are each other's largest trading partners by far and account for a third of global trade. EU officials are hopeful that a 15% baseline tariff would also apply to cars, replacing the current 27.5% auto tariff. Some expect the 27-nation bloc may be able to secure exemptions from the 15% baseline tariff for its aerospace industry and for spirits, though probably not for wine. The EU could also pledge to buy more liquefied natural gas from the U.S., a long-standing offer, and boost investment in the United States. Trump told reporters there was 'not a lot' of wiggle room on the 50% tariffs that the U.S. has on steel and aluminium imports, adding, 'because if I do it for one, I have to do it for all.' The U.S. president, in Scotland for a few days of golfing and bilateral meetings, told reporters upon his arrival on Friday evening that von der Leyen was a highly respected leader and he was looking forward to meeting with her. He said there was a 50-50 chance that the two sides could reach a framework trade pact, adding that Brussels wanted to 'make a deal very badly'. The EU now faces U.S. tariffs on more than 70% of its exports, with 50% on steel and aluminium, an extra 25% on cars and car parts on top of the existing 2.5% and a 10% levy on most other EU goods. Trump has said that without a deal, he would hike the rate to 30% on August 1, a level EU officials said would wipe out whole chunks of transatlantic commerce. Further tariffs on copper and pharmaceuticals are looming. The uncertainty and higher tariffs have already hit profits of EU companies in several sectors. A 15% tariff on most EU goods would remove uncertainty but would be seen by many in Europe as a poor outcome compared to the initial European ambition of a zero-for-zero tariff deal on all industrial goods. Seeking to learn from Japan, which secured a 15% baseline tariff with the U.S. in a deal earlier this week, EU negotiators spoke to their Japanese counterparts in preparation for Sunday's meeting. For Trump, aiming to reorder the global economy and reduce decades-old U.S. trade deficits, a deal with the EU would be the biggest trade agreement, surpassing the $550 billion deal with Japan. So far, he has reeled in agreements with Britain, Japan, Indonesia and Vietnam, although his administration has failed to deliver on a promise of '90 deals in 90 days.'
