Bank Of America Analyst Gets 10-Year Jail In Saudi Arabia For Old Tweet: Entire Case Explained

NDTV14-05-2025
A British senior business analyst and father of four, formerly with Bank of America, has been sentenced to 10 years in a Saudi prison over a single 2018 tweet. Ahmed al-Doush, 41, received the harsh penalty after Saudi authorities deemed a now-deleted post from his 37-follower X account a national security threat, The Times of London reported. The Saudi government also made an unverified claim that Ahmed al-Doush was in contact with a Saudi critic in exile.
His family stated he never posted about Saudi Arabia but occasionally shared comments on Sudan's political situation, which they believe led to his arrest, according to the outlet.
Ahmed al-Doush's Arrest
On August 31, 2024, Ahmed al-Doush was arrested at King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh while preparing to return to the UK with his wife and three children. At his request, his family, including his then-pregnant wife, returned to the UK without him, as he was detained at the airport. He was later imprisoned in a maximum-security facility, enduring 33 days in solitary confinement, where he remains after being charged on Monday.
His family had no contact with him until November, when he first appeared in court and was allowed a consular visit. His lawyers argue that his rights to due process and a fair trial were violated through solitary confinement, extended detention without charges, and interrogations without legal representation.
"The fact that it is still unclear what tweet forms the basis of the charge, even after conviction and even to the UK government, further demonstrates the fair trial violations. The information known indicates that the charges against him, the proceedings and his treatment are contrary to international law and human rights standards," UK-based lawyer Haydee Dijkstal told the outlet.
Mr Dijkstal added that Saudi prison officials instructed him not to discuss the hearings or his prison conditions with his family, per the report.
Ahmed al-Doush's Wife's Plea
Nour, the wife of Ahmed al-Doush, has urged the UK government to take action to secure her husband's release. She has urged the government to increase diplomatic efforts to secure his release, highlighting the strain his detention has placed on their family.
"He missed the birth of our fourth child and our tenth wedding anniversary. How many more family milestones will he have to miss before the [UK government agencies] sit up and take action?", his wife Nour al-Doush told The Times Of London.
" The night times are the hardest for me when I'm alone and it's quiet. I keep asking myself why, why, why this has happened, and I can't get to the bottom of it because it's not rational in any way. he has no political associations," she added.
Amnesty Calls For Action
Amnesty International and Sanad Human Rights Organisation have also expressed concerns over his detention, calling for his immediate release and criticising the lack of transparency in his trial.
Sacha Deshmukh, Chief Executive of Amnesty International UK, said: 'We strongly condemn this sentence and reiterate our urgent call on the Saudi authorities to immediately and unconditionally release Ahmed al-Doush, if he is being held solely for peacefully exercising his human rights."
"He must be allowed to return to his family in the UK without delay. In the meantime, Saudi authorities must uphold his fair trial rights, promptly share his court documents with him and guarantee regular access to both his family and legal counsel," Mr Deshmukh added.
"We also urge the UK government to take all necessary steps to secure his immediate and unconditional release. The arbitrary detention of another British national abroad cannot be tolerated. Immediate and decisive action is essential."
"We are supporting a British man who is detained in Saudi Arabia and are in contact with his family and the local authorities," the UK's Foreign Office said in a statement to The Times.

Fresh case against Chhangur Baba & 12 others, after UP woman alleges gang rape, sexual exploitation and forced conversion

1 2 Lucknow: UP's Kushinagar district police on Wednesday lodged an FIR against 13 people, including Balrampur-based cleric Jalaluddin alias Chhangur Baba and a serving police constable, in a case allegedly involving illegal religious conversions, gang rape, abduction and sexual exploitation. The FIR, filed on the complaint of a young woman, alleges a chilling nexus of crime that began in 2017. According to the survivor, she first came into contact with Mohd Rafiq Khan alias Bablu, a local political functionary with alleged gangster links, during a college function. Exploiting her vulnerable financial situation, Bablu lured her with a job promise and subjected her to repeated sexual assault, she alleged. In March 2024, the woman was allegedly abducted by Bablu, Naushad Khan alias Nata Nawab and their associates, and taken to a shrine at Utraula in Balrampur, where she was introduced to Chhangur Baba. There, Baba forcibly got her converted to Islam and renamed her Joya Khan. She was then forced into a nikah with Naushad Khan, which was attended by Bablu and others, the woman alleged in her FIR. The complainant alleged that she was taken to Mumbai, where she faced prolonged sexual exploitation at the hands of Naushad, before he abandoned her. She was then sent back to UP and placed in Bablu Khan's household, and subsequently employed at Red Hills Infra Project under Alamgir Ansari. There, she faced repeated assaults by Alamgir, his son Sahil and associates, including Ritesh Mishra and Tanveer, the woman alleged in the FIR. The survivor claims that although Naushad had abandoned her, he routinely collected her salary of Rs 15,000, leaving her trapped in dependency. She further alleged that when she attempted to file a complaint at Tamkuhi Raj police station in Kushinagar, she was betrayed by constable Imtiaz Khan, who handed her back to the accused. She was then allegedly gang-raped by Imtiaz, Irshad Khan and Jamaluddin near the Jharhi river, before being strangled. However, she survived. Kushinagar SP Santosh Kumar Mishra based on the woman's complaint, the 13 accused had been booked under multiple sections of IPC, along with provisions of the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Religious Conversion Act, 2021. Chhangur Baba, already in Lucknow jail after his arrest in July by UP ATS, remains a central figure in the probe in the latest case. He allegedly ran an organised conversion syndicate from Chand Auliya Dargah in Balrampur. The ED has also claimed that he amassed illicit wealth worth Rs 100 crore, including Rs 15 crore in Pune real estate and multiple unauthorised properties. Man & teen son ‘forced' to trace missing family, allege police apathy

Hyderabad: What should have been the job of law enforcement has, in desperation, turned into a 'mission' for a father and his teenage son. For the last six weeks, Hyderabad-based DTP operator Shareef Saleh and his son have been virtually conducting their own investigation to trace his missing wife and two daughters — one of them a minor and specially abled. On July 12, Shareef's wife Mujeebunissa (40), along with their daughters Shareef Ayesha (18) and Shareef Zainab (16), left their Bandlaguda residence. An FIR was registered the same day, but Shareef alleges that little progress was made. "We did not get the desired help from the police. That forced me to take matters into my own hands," he said. Using his son's computer, which still had his wife's WhatsApp account open, Shareef discovered her last conversations were with her sister, a Bangladesh national settled there after marriage. "That was the first red flag," he recalls. Mujeebunissa's sister, who married a Bangladeshi, moved from Hyderabad to Bangladesh and later acquired that country's citizenship. From those records, Shareef pieced together that his wife and daughters were in Kolkata, even identifying hotels where they stayed through food delivery apps. "One delivery boy confirmed their location. But since then, the trail has gone cold. My son and I have hit a dead end," he added. The family now fears the women may have been trafficked to Bangladesh. However, the police deny his charges of inaction. Bandlaguda inspector R Devender said: "It is the police who are investigating. We found her last location on the West Bengal border, and we know her sister lives in Bangladesh. Prima facie, it appears to be a marital dispute, and she left wilfully. His allegations are false." Shareef, however, pleads for more cooperation. "I am only asking the police to coordinate with Kolkata authorities so that I can know if my wife and daughters are safe," he said. Youth tricked by fake job offer in Russia dies of ‘stress'

Pudukottai: A 24-year-old youth from Pudukottai, who was allegedly duped by a Tirunelveli-based agent with the promise of a job in Russia, died at a lodge in Delhi on Aug 13. The family owed his death to the severe mental distress he was in after waiting in vain for three months to fly abroad. The victim, G Rajapandi of Andavarayapuram in Alangudi taluk, had approached job consultant Vadivel Pillai in Tirunelveli hoping to secure employment in Russia. His father, a fisherman, said that the agent collected ₹2.03 lakh from them in instalments since Oct 2024. "The agent assured that Rajapandi would be sent abroad within three months," Rajapandi's brother Ravi Varman said. A petition submitted by the family to the district collector said Rajapandi was first taken to Chennai and then to Delhi in May and made to stay in a private lodge in Vasant Kunj after repeated cancellation of his flight tickets, citing visa issues. The family said he spent over ₹60,000 on accommodation until Aug, while the agent kept delaying his travel. When Rajapandi pressed for a refund, the agent allegedly returned only ₹18,000 in small amounts through online transfers. Struggling under debt after pawning his mother's jewellery and borrowing from neighbours, the youth was under immense mental pressure, Ravi said. On Aug 13, Rajapandi was found dead at his lodge in Delhi. CCTV footage shows him suddenly collapsing while trying to open the door. His body was brought to Chennai after post-mortem. While doctors in Delhi have indicated a possible cardiac arrest, the family does not accept it, and are awaiting the final post-mortem report for clarity. Along with their petition, the family also submitted WhatsApp voice messages in which Rajapandi is heard lamenting to his friends that Vadivel Pillai had cheated him. The family has urged the authorities to initiate action against the agent on charges of cheating and abetment of suicide.
