Broncos' Courtland Sutton makes PFF's list of ‘Safety-Blanket WRs'

USA Today19-07-2025
Pro Football Focus writer Lauren Gray recently compiled a unique list describing the NFL's best safety blanket wide receivers. Gray's safety blanket measure is for the WRs who were their quarterback's top targets when blitzed/under pressure. Wide receiver Drake London from the Atlanta Falcons led the way with the 21.1 percent threat rate, while Baltimore Ravens WR Zay Flowers ranked third with a 20 percent threat rate.
Fourth on the list is the Denver Broncos' own Courtland Sutton with a 19.7 percent threat rate.
'Bo Nix targeted Sutton 34 times when he was pressured as a rookie, and Sutton caught 19 of those passes for 289 yards and 13 first downs," Gray wrote for PFF. "He secured four of eight contested targets, tallied nine gains of 15-plus yards (tied for ninth most) and recorded a seventh-ranked 81.0 PFF receiving grade on such plays.
"Sutton ranks sixth in PFF receiving grade on targets when his quarterback was pressured over the past three seasons (83.8). That mark is fueled by 55 catches for 851 yards, six touchdowns, 42 first downs and 27 explosive gains.'
Sutton being a safety blanket for then-rookie quarterback Bo Nix helped the QB's transition in Sean Payton's offense. Sutton tallied 81 catches for 1,081 yards and eight touchdowns in 2024. Hopefully, Sutton can build off his productive pairing with Nix for 2025 and continue to be his safety blanket

Jaxson Dart looks more at home in best Giants training camp day yet

Jaxson Dart looked the part. The rookie first-round quarterback had his best day on an NFL field so far Sunday as he was accurate and aggressive down the field — a noticeable change from holding the ball too long when he wasn't getting off short, quick passes. 'I can definitely feel a difference in the first day [last Wednesday] to even today,' Dart said. 'Just that the game's starting to slow down a little bit the more that I get comfortable with the plays and the system.' Dart is adjusting to running first-time plays and mixing in with different receivers — all of whom require different timing. 'I felt confident in the different installs that we had [Sunday], and I felt at the same time the coaches gave me a lot of freedom,' Dart said. 'So I was able to make some checks that I wanted to, and I feel like that just allowed me to play just faster and be able to make quicker decisions.' Dart led a 12-play move-the-field drive that included a third-down completion and a couple of designed quarterback runs. Perhaps most significantly, he used a hard count — after clapping his hands to get the ball at Ole Miss — to draw the defense offside. 3 Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart (6) looks to throw during Training Camp at the Quest Diagnostics center, Sunday, July 27, 2025, in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Corey Sipkin for the NY POST 'I don't want to play like a robot,' Dart said. 'I think that's just my play style. When I'm on the field, I'm going to be aggressive in any situation. A quote that we go by in the quarterback room is, 'Being aggressive but not reckless.' So, when you have opportunities to put the dagger in, that's what you have to do. And, at the same time, you can't be reckless.' Dart's philosophy during training camp is to get the mistakes out on the practice field and don't make the same error twice. It sounds like an extension of head coach Brian Daboll's philosophy. 3 Jaxson Dart (6) looks on during Training Camp at the Quest Diagnostics center, Sunday, July 27, 2025. John Michael Schmitz's trio of errant snaps in Friday's practice were a red flag. His best chance to atone comes Monday, when linemen put on pads for the first time. 3 Michael Schmitz Jr. (61) on the field during training camp. Daboll lauded Brian Burns for his chase-the-ball hustle on the play that led to a collision with Wan'Dale Robinson in Friday's practice. Burns only participated in limited drills Sunday while dealing with soreness. 'He's had a number of those this camp,' Daboll said. 'His effort has been outstanding.'

Former Texas A&M OF Braden Montgomery promoted to AA after steady surge in A+ ball

The Chicago White Sox are promoting Braden Montgomery to the Birmingham Barons (AA). Former Texas A&M outfielder and first-round pick Braden Montgomery is on the move, as the Chicago White Sox have promoted him to AA ball. MiLB Central announced that Montgomery was called up from the Winston-Salem Dash to the Birmingham Barons. The No. 26-ranked prospect has been remarkably consistent since joining the A+ Dash team and has flashed big-league potential in his 69 games played. He boasts a slash line of .260/.348/.445, with 38 RBIs and eight home runs. One area for improvement is his strikeout rate, which sits at 27.5% with 70 strikeouts. While it's not alarming, it is slightly higher than some other Top 100 outfielders, like Colt Emerson and Blake Mitchell, who hover in the low-to-mid 20% range. Still, Montgomery makes up for it with his on-base percentage and slugging ability as a switch-hitter. He's tallied 17 doubles and three triples among his 66 hits, making him a dangerous hitter with runners in scoring position. Below is the announcement via social media.
