CISF deployment row: Punjab to take legal opinion on BBMB paying Rs 8 crore to Centre
'We will take a legal opinion on what the government can do next after the BBMB pays Rs 8.58 crore to the Centre for deployment. It is, however, clear that the dams will be manned by the Punjab Police only. We will tell you about the next steps we are taking on the issue in the coming days,' Finance Minister Harpal Cheema told the media after the Cabinet meeting led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann.
In May, the Centre had sanctioned a contingent of 296 armed CISF personnel to provide a counter-terrorist security cover to the Nangal dam in Punjab amid the standoff between Punjab and Haryana over the sharing of water from the dam. However, the Punjab Government withdrew the consent for deploying Central forces at the dams on July 7 and later passed a resolution in the Assembly in this regard.
The Cabinet on Wednesday reiterated that the Punjab Police were capable of protecting all the dams under BBMB — Pong, Bhakra, and Nanagal — and hence it would not bear any expenses incurred on the deployment of CISF.
This amount is to be paid for the deployment of 296 security personnel for the security of the dam.
'We have already made it clear that our police is capable of handling the dams. We will not allow the central forces to be deployed. The 3 crore people of the state, through the Vidhan Sabha, have already passed a resolution and sent it to the Centre rejecting the deployment of CISF,' said Cheema.
However, even after the resolution, BBMB has paid an amount of Rs 8.58 crore to the Centre.
The Centre had announced to deploy CISF after BBMB Chairman Manoj Tripathi was held captive at the Bhakra dam two months ago, when the Punjab government had refused to release extra water to Haryana. At that time, the residents of the area, Minister Harjot Bains, locked up Tripathi in the rest house of BBMB.
The Cabinet mentioned that a bill of Rs 113 crore has been sent to Haryana for the expenses related to the Bhakra Main Line (BML), which was due by that state for the past eight years.
Cheema said that the previous governments in Punjab ignored the fact that Haryana was not paying the cost of the line in Bhakra, although 63 per cent of the water from BML was utilised by the state, while Punjab was spending on it from its Exchequer.
In another Cabinet decision, the state government has reorganised many blocks of Punjab. Cheema said that many blocks were in some other district while their sub-division was elsewhere. 'For instance, several villages in my constituency, Dirba, were near Dirba, but their headquarters were in Sunam. This was creating administrative problems,' he explained. He said that no new block has been added in the reorganisation of blocks, and the number of blocks will remain the same at 154.

ED raids Tamil Nadu Minister I Periyasamy, son in money laundering case
The Enforcement Directorate on Saturday searched multiple premises linked to Tamil Nadu Minister and DMK leader I Periyasamy and his MLA son as part of a money laundering investigation, official sources said. The raids were undertaken in Chennai and Dindigul under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). The premises of I P Sentilkumar, the son of the 72-year-old minister for rural development, panchayats and panchayat unions, were also searched, according to the sources. Periyasamy represents the Athoor assembly constituency in Dindigul district. There was no immediate comment from Periyasamy or the DMK on the ED action. The money laundering investigation stems from an April order of the Madras High Court, which directed a special court in Dindigul to frame charges against Periyasamy and his family members in connection with a Rs 2.1 crore "disproportionate" assets case. The order came in response to some criminal revision petitions filed by the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC), challenging a special court order discharging Periyasamy and his family members from the case. The HC also directed the special court to conduct the trial on a day-to-day basis and complete it within six months. The prosecution's case was that Periyasamy had amassed wealth to the tune of Rs 2.1 crore in his name and in the names of his wife, P Suseela and sons P Sentilkumar and P Prabhu, disproportionate to his known sources of income when he was a minister between 2006 and 2010. Tushar Gandhi slams governors for acting as ‘Super Chancellors'
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Tushar Gandhi, great-grandson of Mahatma Gandhi and noted author, on Saturday lashed out at governors, alleging they have turned into super chancellors and misuse their position to obstruct the functioning of elected governments. He alleged that governors were being used as political tools of the Centre to weaken state administrations. Speaking at a national seminar organised by the Kerala Sasthra Sahithya Parishad (KSSP) on challenges in higher education, Gandhi said, "Now the governors are acting as super chancellors. Those in BJP-ruled states enjoy retirement, while those in opposition states are tasked with making governance difficult," he remarked. Gandhi also came down heavily on the National Education Policy (NEP), warning that it would create enslaved minds by curbing rational thought and academic freedom. He argued that education had lost the freedom it once enjoyed, with teachers forced into a system that discouraged questioning. "If primary education itself is shackled, the future will suffer. We need state-oriented education models instead of a one-size-fits-all union policy," he said. Expressing concern over the decline of rational thinking in society, Gandhi said even educated people were falling prey to irrational claims spread on social media. Citing an example, he said, "One of my relatives, a former IIT professor, forwarded a photo of a circular rainbow calling it 'Brahma Danush'. Natural phenomena are now being projected as miracles to fuel irrational practices. These are propaganda tools of fascist forces."

Lineman electrocuted in UP; family protests
Agency: PTI Last Updated: Kannauj (UP), Aug 16 (PTI) A 24-year-old contractual lineman died in Uttar Pradesh's Kannauj after an electric shock and his family members staged a protest by placing the body at the Tirwa electricity substation, officials said on Saturday. The incident occurred on Friday in Kannauj's Pungra village when Brajesh Rathore, an electricity department lineman, took a shutdown to repair the power line, but as soon as he climbed the pole, the power supply started, and he got an electric shock, they said. He was taken to Government Medical College Tirwa, where doctors declared him dead, police said. The deceased's family members took his body to Tirwa Power House, where they blocked the road. The crowd kept creating a ruckus for two hours. During the traffic jam, police arrived at the scene and attempted to persuade the family members involved, but they refused to cooperate. They tried to remove the body forcefully, leading to a scuffle between the people who had blocked the road and the police. Women also clashed with police personnel. The police chased away the crowd with lathis and restored order after three hours. Superintendent of Police Vinod Kumar said Rathore, a resident of Thathiya, died due to an electric shock. After this, the family members created a ruckus by placing the body at the Tirwa power house, and some miscreants also pelted stones at the police vehicle, due to which the glass of the car broke. Some police personnel have also been injured, Kumar said, adding that the miscreants will be identified, and action will be taken. Kannauj MP and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav expressed grief over the lineman's death. In a post on X, he said, 'The death of an electrician in Kannauj due to electrocution is unfortunate. In such a sensitive environment of grief, the way the police have behaved with the public and especially with the woman, is very objectionable. The guilty policemen should be suspended, and punitive action should also be taken." 'We demand that a compensation of Rs 1 crore be given to the victim's family. Along with this, there is also a demand that an investigation should be done to find out the reason for the electrocution, so that such accidents do not occur in the future. Cognisance should be taken," Yadav added. PTI COR NAV ANM NB view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
