Former Pakistan pacer Shabbir Ahmed accused India of ball tampering in the fifth and final Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy at The Oval. Ahmed, in fact, urged the ICC umpires to send the ball used by India in Days 4 and 5 of the series final to a lab for examination. Ahmed's reaction came after India registered their narrowest Test win by six runs to level the five-match series 2-2. India's Mohammed Siraj, right, talks with Prasidh Krishna(AP) Mohammed Siraj got a nearly 80-over-old ball swinging both ways on Day 5 of the India vs England fifth Test. So did Prasidh Krishna. Maybe not as Siraj but he, too, got the ball to zip around. So much so that India captain Shubman Gill did not even think of taking the second new ball, even when India were in need of the last three England wickets with less than 30 runs to play with. And it bore rich dividends. Siraj kept swinging the ball away from the right-handers and mixed it up with fuller length in-coming deliveries to leave the England tail in tatters. First, he dismissed England only recognised batter Jamie Smith with an outwinger and then got one to dart back in sharply to Jamie Overton, the other overnight batter, to trap him lbw. After taking a couple of early wickets, Siraj and Prasidh really applied the brakes on England. Krishna nearly got the wicket of Josh Tongue but the decision was overturned by DRS. Krishna, however, bowled a cracker of a delivery to rattle the stumps of Tongue soon after. In between, both Siraj and Prasidh Krishna produced a number of wicket-taking deliveries on a pitch that offered a lot to the seamers right throughout the Test match, no matter how old the ball was. Despite all the pitch and the overcast conditions, credit must be given to the Indian seamers who gave it their all to make the ball talk and get the last seven England wickets for just 66 runs. India accused of ball tampering in fifth Test against England Pakistan's former pacer Shabbir Ahmed, however, was not ready to doff his hat to the skill of the Indian pacers. He, instead, accused them of using 'Vaseline' to maintain the shine of the ball even when it got old. The former lanky right-arm medium pacer, who played 10 Tests and 3 ODIs for Pakistan, completely ignored the pitch, the overcast conditions and above all, the craft of Siraj and Krishna. "I think India used Vaseline. After 80 + over ball still shine like new. Umpire should send this ball to the lab for examination," he wrote on X. This was not the first time a former Pakistan pacer accused India of tampering with the ball's conditions. During the 2023 ODI World Cup, when Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah, and Siraj got the new ball to swing considerably more than any other new ball bowler in the tournament, former Pakistan cricketer Hasan Raza said the ICC was giving India a "different ball." This was not the end of it. During the T20 World Cup in 2024, which India won, former Pakistan captain Inzamam-ul-Haq accused India pacer Arshdeep Singh of ball-tampering. Iyer last played a T20I match for India in December 2023 against Australia, and his last Test match was against the English team in the first week of February 2024. Star middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer, who last played a T20I match for India in December 2023 against Australia and a Test match in the first week of February 2024 against England in Visakhapatnam, is all set to return to India's T20I and Test squad. According to a report in the Times of India on Thursday (August 7), the 30-year-old right-handed batter from Mumbai, who was in red-hot form with the bat for Punjab Kings in IPL 2025 after joining them for Rs 26.75 crore in the mega auction last year, is likely to earn his place back in India's T20I and Test side when the selectors meet in August to pick the squad for the Asia Cup in the UAE and the two-Test series against the West Indies in India. 'We need Iyer's class and experience in the middle order in all formats. It's something which we missed in England during the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. The selectors are aware that Iyer is an excellent player of spin bowling, which will be crucial in a home season that involves four Tests — two each against the West Indies and South Africa," sources told TOI. Iyer's record in Tests and T20Is Iyer made his T20I debut for India against New Zealand in Delhi on November 1, 2017, but didn't get a chance to bat in that fixture. Since then he has played 51 T20Is for Men in Blue and, with the help of eight half-centuries, amassed a total of 1104 runs. He made his Test debut against New Zealand at Green Park in Kanpur on November 25, 2021, and scored a century (105 runs from 171 balls) in the first innings. In the second innings of that match, he scored 65 runs from 125 balls and bagged the Player of the Match award. Iyer overall has 811 runs to his name in 24 innings of 14 Test matches. Despite losing his place in the Test and T20I teams last year, Iyer was a regular member of the ODI side, and he finished as the highest run-getter in the Champions Trophy 2025. Gary Kirsten, under whose coaching India won the 2011 World Cup, has revealed his biggest challenge in the role. Surprisingly, it's not the WC-winning campaign but making a star bowler come to the nets for batting. 'The biggest challenge was getting Ishant Sharma to come down to the nets with his bat and pads and then to get him to face 48 balls in a Test match against England with VVS Laxman to win the Test match. That was a highlight for me to work on his batting. I really enjoyed that from a leadership perspective because he didn't think he could bat, and he still can't bat that well. But we kind of helped him get through that Test match and do really well in it," Kirsten said in an event on Thursday, as quoted by News18. Recently, Kirsten made a massive revelation on the campaign. He has said that all-rounder Yuvraj Singh, who turned out to be the Player of the Series in the quadrennial event, was not a certainty in the team that was set to be picked for it. Yuvraj had a dull 2010, but as fate would have it, he was trusted and picked for the World Cup next year. He repaid the faith by playing an intruemental role in India winning the title. Yuvraj scored 362 runs while also picking 15 wickets in the tournament. MS Dhoni -led India defeated Sri Lanka in the summit clash of the tournament by 6 wickets as the side lifted the World Cup after 28 years. "Thank goodness we picked him because it was flipping close, he was. It was not a slam-dunk selection. The selectors kind of debated around the 15 players," Kirsten told Kirsten revealed that he and the then India captain Dhoni both were keen to have the all-rounder in the team. "I was very keen to have him in the team as was Dhoni, because of the experience that he brought to the group. And look at the World Cup he ended up having," the ex-India coach said. "I was always very fond of Yuvraj. We had this kind of great relationship where like, he used to frustrate the hell out of me sometimes, but I just loved him. He was good. I just want him to be scoring runs all the time because when I watch him bat, it's just like amazing to watch," he added. Kirsten also said that Paddy Upton, then India's mental conditioning and strategic leadership coach, too played a role in helping Yuvraj reach his best. "But there was a journey he had to walk and credit to Paddy (Upton). Paddy did a lot of work with Yuvi to get him ready for that World Cup. Yuvi himself made some key decisions around getting himself prepared and ready for the World Cup," Kirsten said.
