First up: 300 East.
Located in a craftsman-style home in Dilworth, the nearly 40-year-old restaurant is reliably welcoming. Emphasis on reliability. It feels like a fixture — part of the city's fabric, past, present and (hopefully) future.
Dig in: It's best known for its brunch menu, namely the breakfast pizza, as well as its desserts.
Regulars will recommend the French onion soup and "The Usual," an open-faced chicken salad sandwich that has been on the menu since the restaurant was called "The White Horse."
Flashback: The historic 1900-era Victorian home originally housed The White Horse restaurant. When Catherine Coulter bought the building in 1985, she relocated it down the street, according to the Charlotte Observer. Years later, Coulter reimaged the restaurant as it is today.
Coulter's daughter, Ashley Boyd, grew up in that kitchen and is now the culinary director at 300 East.
The vibe: The new American spot is consistently busy, but never feels rushed. Whether you're sitting on the patio or second-floor mezzanine, you'll feel like you're dining in your own home.
