Arsenal release statement as midfield deal confirmed amid Martin Zubimendi chase

Daily Mirror8 hours ago

Arsenal have seen an early exit for midfield star Jorginho as the Italy international departs before the end of his contract with the prospect of Martin Zubimendi arriving at the Emirates
Arsenal have confirmed that Jorginho has been released from his contract after coming to a mutual agreement to see him become a free agent. The midfielder was set to leave at the end of the month when his contract expired but has now made his exit prematurely and joined Brazilian club Flamengo in time to feature in the Club World Cup in the United States.
Jorginho joined the Gunners in January 2023 from Chelsea and made 78 appearances for the club. The Italy international arrives in time as Flamengo begin their campaign in the US against ES Tunis, while Jorginho could line up against Chelsea on June 20, in the Brazilian side's second match of the group stage.

Posting on social media, Arsenal said: "The club can confirm that we have reached a mutual agreement with Jorginho to end his contract with immediate effect. Thank you for everything and all the best, Jorgi"

The north London side were highly complimentary of their former charge and said in their statement: "Jorginho (full name Jorge Luiz Frello Filho), soon became a hugely respected member of the squad. His natural leadership skills, together with his control in midfield, intelligent positioning and extensive, high-quality passing, ensured that he was a valuable and integral part of the club."
"Everyone at Arsenal Football Club would like to thank Jorgi for his contribution to the club and we wish him and his family all the best for the future," they added.
The Gunners are set to say goodbye to 17 players at the end of the month with Kieran Tierney joining Jorginho in exiting the Emirates. The Scotland star is set to join Celtic.
Speaking about his exit, Tierney said: 'Just thank you for everything from day one. They supported us through the good times and the bad, and they supported me through some hard times as well.
"I think that's what I'm most grateful for, the times where it wasn't so good or so easy for me is when they probably supported me most, so I'm just very grateful and I feel very lucky to have the support from them.

"I feel so lucky that I've played for this club and the love that the supporters have given me has been amazing. I've loved every day here and I've learned so much, I've improved so much and I just feel very lucky."
Arsenal are set to be busy this summer however, and already seem to have a midfield replacement for Jorginho. Martin Zubimendi is expected to arrive in north London.
The finishing touches are said to being put to a deal, though theSpain international has suggested a move away from Real Sociedad is not guaranteed. The 26-year-old, who rejected the chance to move to Liverpool last August, told Radio Nacional when asked if he could yet stay in the Basque region.

"Of course there are options, but it's true that it seems like it's going to be a different, long summer, and I don't know how it will end," he said.
"I don't think thinking about that right now is my priority. I'm here with the national team, which I think is already quite demanding, and if I have to say something, then I will."

Chelsea 'hesitate' over signing £68m striker ahead of Liverpool

Chelsea are 'hesitating' over beating Liverpool to the signing of Eintracht Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike, according to reports in Germany. Chelsea are looking to squad ahead of the Club World Cup and the £30 million deal to sign Liam Delap from Ipswich Town was completed this week. Chelsea are also in advanced talks with Borussia Dortmund over a deal for Jamie Gittens, who has agreed a seven-year contract with the Premier League side. Ekitike, meanwhile, has attracted interest following his impressive season with Eintracht Frankfurt in which he finished the campaign with 22 goals in all competitions. According to BILD, Chelsea remain in the running to sign Ekitike before the transfer deadline at 7pm next Tuesday, but the club still have reservations over moving forward with a deal. It's claimed that the key reason is Chelsea's valuation of Ekitike – Eintracht Frankfurt value the 22-year-old at €100m (£84.3m) but Chelsea are refusing to go beyond €80m (£67.4m). BILD also report that Liverpool are also interested in Ekitike but their main focus is to reach an agreement with Bayer Leverkusen for Florian Wirtz. Last week, reports in Germany claimed that Liverpool had held initial talks over a move for Ekitike. Speaking on the final day of the Bundesliga season, Eintracht Frankfurt's sporting director, Markus Krosche, refused to rule out the prospect of selling Ekitike this summer. 'He's one of the most interesting strikers on the European market. Hugo has to decide that,' Krosche told Sport 1. More Trending 'I'm glad we have him. If he decides otherwise, that's our motto – if a player develops faster than us, we let him go.' Earlier this week, Ekitike pulled out of France's Under-21s squad for their European Championship campaign due to a back injury. Chelsea, meanwhile, begin their Club World Cup campaign against Los Angeles FC on June 16. Maresca's side will then play Flamengo on June 20 before finishing their Group D campaign against ES Tunis on June 20. For more stories like this, check our sport page. Ruben Amorim makes decision on selling injury stricken Man Utd star

Ruben Amorim's stance on selling Lisandro Martinez has been revealed after the Manchester United star was linked with a shock transfer to Napoli. Martinez has been a good defender for United since following Erik ten Hag from Ajax in 2022 in a deal worth upwards of £50million. The Red Devils have however struggled when the Argentine World Cup winner has been unavailable, which unfortunately for them is quite often. Over the past three seasons, the 27-year-old has missed a whopping 80 games for club and country because of injury and has not played since suffering a cruciate ligament injury in early February. Martinez underwent surgery to deal with the issue and won't return before the start of the 2025/26 campaign, with some reports suggesting he might not feature again until next year. Given his fitness problems and the need to raise funds for his rebuild, it would be understandable if Amorim sold Martinez, with Napoli interested in his services. Antonio Conte is keen on the centre-back, as well as out of favour winger Alejandro Garnacho, following the highly successful signing of Scott McTominay from Old Trafford last summer. But Martinez is not keen on the move and neither is Amorim, with Sky Sports reporting that the head coach was 'hugely impressed by Martinez before the injury' and sees him as 'a key pillar of his defence' and the leadership group at the club. Additionally, the player's rehabilitation is going well and there is no tear in his meniscus, though he will not be rushed back into the playing squad until he has returned to peak physical condition. More Trending Not including Martinez, United have just four natural centre-backs in their squad, two of whom, Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven, are teenagers – far from ideal when they play with a back-three formation. Amorim is hoping to improve all areas of his squad as he looks to bounce back after United collapsed to 15th in the Premier League table and missed out on European qualification. Much of the transfer business so far has focused on United's attack, with Matheus Cunha already through the door. They are now pushing to sign Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford and are in pole position to win the transfer race for striker Viktor Gyokeres. For more stories like this, check our sport page.
