'You reap what you sow', UMS student leader tells PMX after torching his caricature

Focus Malaysia24-06-2025
'I BURNED Anwar's face in Sabah because I followed his example of burning (first premier) Tunku Abdul Rahman's book'.
Such was the confession of t Suara Mahasiswa Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) president Fadhil Kasim who incurred the wrath of PKR Youth chief Kamil Munim for burning a caricature of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim with the slogan 'Madani: Protector of Sabah's Corrupt'.
Added the UMS final year undergraduate of how PMX inspired him to pursue his action during the Gempur Rasuah 2.0 Rally at Lintasan Deasoka in Gaya Street, Kota Kinabalu over the weekend:
'When he was the Universiti Malaya Malay Language Society (PBMUM) president, Anwar along with other student leaders demonstrated and burned the book 13 Mei: Sebelum dan Selepas by Tunku Abdul Rahman.
Saya bakar muka Anwar di Sabah sebab saya contohi Anwar bakar buku Tunku Abdul Rahman.

'Deeming the book as 'subversive', the Anwar-led PBMUM committee held a ceremony to bury Tunku's book by demonstrating and burning it in public.'
The 25-year-old went on to explain that he was compelled to state his stance after he and fellow activist Aliff Danial who torched PMX's caricature have received heavy criticism from 'Anwar's sycophants, taking into account our manners, morality and methods of organising the rally'.
'I think Anwar Ibrahim after watching our video will be touched to recall his memories at the UM in the 1970s. But that's just a feeling, my friend,' penned Fadhil on his X account with a tinge of sarcasm.
Defending action
'The reality is that Anwar is now Malaysia's PM, not a student activist (anymore). When he was in the opposition, Anwar would go to Sabah to bring his top-5 popular narratives. Musa Aman; timber; roads; corruption; and Sabah's rights.
'Now it's different, Anwar may be more concerned about how to maintain the strength of GRS (Gabungan Rakyat Sabah) in the Madani administration at a time when the ruling state government is embroiled in an extraordinary corruption scandal.'
For the record, Fadhil had on Feb 25 escaped action after the Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC) decided to drop all charges against him and other individuals involved in an unauthorised assembly (first sequel of the anti-corruption rally) in front of Menara Kinabalu, Likas on Dec 31 last year.
In defending criticism levelled at him by Kamil who is also PMX's political secretary at the Finance Ministry that effigy burning was not just excessive and rude but also showed that the protesters had no valid arguments to make, Fadhil reasoned:
The leadership of ABIM (Muslim Youth Movement of Malaysia), PKR Youth and every organisation that bootlicks Anwar Ibrahim today clearly failed to highlight the nuances of Anwar himself because for them the most important thing now is the opportunity to fan out to continue to rise to the top.
Kamil Munim is the best example (apart from Youth and Sports Deputy Minister Adam Adli).
Apparently, they have failed to delve into the aesthetics of students who are demonstrating on the issue of corruption in Sabah today.
They are more concerned with the portrait of their figure being licked by the fire of anger than the people's wealth that is slowly being plundered by the corruptors and the UMS water crisis. – June 24, 2025

Don't politicise deaths of bullying victims, Anwar warns

PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has reminded all parties not to turn the death of any bullying victim into a political weapon. Anwar, who is also Finance Minister, said that using the death of a bullying victim for deception and incitement is a completely unacceptable act. "As for social media, we regulate it, but there are limits. For example, most recently, someone claiming to be a pathologist gave an account of (the post-mortem on Zara Qairina Mahathir), and this poisoned the minds of millions of people, to the point that my friends, wife and colleagues asked me, 'What is this?' "The person (Zara Qairina) has already died, and then we turn this into a political weapon to attack others. If it were true, that would be one thing - but how can we play up (this issue) in a way that makes use of someone's death for lies and incitement?" he said. Anwar said this when delivering his address at the Prime Minister's Monthly Assembly with staff of the Prime Minister's Department (JPM) here Monday (Aug 18). - Bernama MORE TO COME

PM gives warning after damage done

Good morning. Here's what you should know today. Key Highlights PM gives warning after damage done MIC, MCA warming up to PN PM gives warning after damage done Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim gave a "warning" on Friday for authorities to take "strong action" against those who incite hatred in the country. Though he shied away from naming names, he is most likely referring to Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh - who has been fanning racial sentiments over the two upside down Jalur Gemilang gaffes. But just like in the previous rows over the KK Mart 'Allah' socks, Teresa Kok's remarks about halal certification, and guidelines for Muslims at interfaith events, Anwar is only speaking up after the damage is done. The prime minister and his deputy, Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, had ample time to put their foot down and rebuke Akmal or call for calm. But instead, Anwar's warning came a day after Akmal, Umno Youth, and Bersatu Youth staged a rally in Penang that forced a whole row of shops to close. Akmal has been called up by police for investigations, but don't hold your breath. The Umno Youth chief was also probed last year for sedition in the KK Mart socks row, but no charges were ever filed. HIGHLIGHTS MIC, MCA warming up to PN While Akmal is busy scaring away non-Malays from supporting the government, BN's non-Malay components are also toying with the exit. MIC is engaging in informal talks with Perikatan Nasional over its future. Meanwhile, former MCA vice-president Ti Lian Ker - who has been antagonising the party leadership to quit BN - also had some kind words for PN-component PAS. He said that compared to Akmal, the Islamist party appeared to be more rational and composed in their words and deeds. This is, of course, ignoring all previous instances where PAS has fanned racial and religious sentiments against non-Malays and non-Muslims, of which there are too many to list. [UPDATED] PM warns against exploiting deaths of Zara Qairina, Wan Ahmad Faris

PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has warned all quarters against exploiting the deaths of Zara Qairina Mahathir and Wan Ahmad Faris Wan Abdul Rahman for personal or political gain. Speaking at the Prime Minister's Department monthly assembly, Anwar said the misinformation and social media speculation following the deaths had caused unnecessary public anxiety. "Social media, especially when emotions are high, can exacerbate the spread of misinformation. I have spoken in parliament to caution against exploiting tragedies for gain (membina mahligai di pusara). "Social media is difficult to fully control. Recently, a person claiming to be a pathologist misled millions, influencing friends, spouses and colleagues, and causing unnecessary panic. "This misinformation was then used as a political weapon, which is unacceptable. "We must not exploit someone's death for political purposes or mislead the public," he said in his speech. Anwar also called for an end to the culture of bullying, saying such practices could occur anywhere and take many forms. "These issues of bullying, which can include psychological or physical abuse, whether at school, in offices or within the Health Ministry. "It can manifest in many forms, including insults based on a person's skin colour, class or other reasons. "We must cultivate a culture to address this. "While there have been procedural lapses and delays in investigations, we are trying to address them as best as possible," he said, noting that high-level meetings had been held to ensure investigations were conducted transparently. It was reported that the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and the police are working to identify a TikTok user who falsely claimed to be a surgeon involved in the post-mortem of Form One student Zara. Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said the individual had claimed he was present during the post-mortem on Aug 10, but checks by the Health Ministry confirmed that he was neither a specialist nor a staff member. Zara Qairina was pronounced dead at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Kota Kinabalu on July 17 after being admitted a day earlier. She was found unconscious in a drain near the dormitory of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Agama Tun Datu Mustapha in Papar at 4am on July 16. Meanwhile, in December 2013, Wan Ahmad Faris, a fourth-year student at Maahad Tahfiz Sains Nurul Aman, Kok Lanas, was found dead in the school dormitory toilet. His death was initially reported as having no criminal elements. However, in June 2016, the Coroner's Court ruled that Wan Ahmad Faris's death was caused by the actions of an unknown individual, effectively dismissing the possibility of suicide. On July 29, the late student's family filed a lawsuit in the Kota Baru High Court to allow the investigation into his case to be reopened.
