Tiong orders crackdown on illegal Sabah tourism ops

Kuala Lumpur: Several tour companies in Tawau, Sabah, previously believed to be locally owned, have been found to be run by Chinese investors and linked to illegal activities, Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing revealed. He said some operators had built over-water chalets without permits, run aquaculture farms without approval and set up unlicensed homestays on agricultural or livestock land. The findings came after a joint enforcement operation in Tawau involving the Ministry's Tourism Licensing and Enforcement Division, the Immigration Department, the Royal Malaysia Police and other agencies. 'I received numerous complaints about irregularities and illegal activities at tourist sites, which are damaging the safety reputation of Malaysia's tourism industry,' Tiong said in a Facebook post. Operating without proper certification, he warned, posed serious safety and management risks, and could lead to tragedy if accidents occur. Tiong urged local authorities to act swiftly, investigate suspicious operations and shut down businesses without valid licences. While welcoming foreign investment in tourism, he stressed it must be done legally and in full compliance with Malaysian laws. 'Welcoming investors does not mean turning a blind eye. Whether they are from China or anywhere else, those involved in illegal activities, malpractice or the misuse of rental licences to evade the law will not be tolerated,' he said. He added that tour operators found to have broken the law could face permanent licence revocation if there was firm evidence. Local tourism operators and workers were also reminded not to risk their livelihoods by leasing or lending their licences. During the Tawau operation, enforcement teams inspected 30 buses and tourist vehicles, 15 tourism business premises, 40 boats and four jetties, issuing nine summonses. Tiong said he personally joined inspections of buses, tour guides and tour package counters at the airport, and issued fines to several tour groups and buses suspected of offences. Sea patrols were also conducted, with enforcement teams boarding five boats and finding some over capacity, without valid permits or carrying unverified documents. Roadblocks were set up to check bus permits and driving licences, while premises and moored vessels were inspected for valid licences, documentation and safety equipment. Thai woman caught using fake plate to buy subsidised diesel in Kedah
ALOR STAR: A Thai woman in her 40s has been detained for attempting to smuggle subsidised diesel using a pick-up truck fitted with a fake Malaysian registration plate in Kuala Nerang, Padang Terap, on Saturday. The Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry said the case was uncovered following a public tip-off and subsequent surveillance. Its state director Muhamad Nizam Jamaluddin said initial monitoring found the vehicle refuelling at a petrol station before moving to the back of the premises. "Checks showed the driver had switched a suspected fake Malaysian plate back to its original foreign registration after refuelling," he said in a statement today. He said the vehicle was fitted with a modified tank storing diesel. "A total of 273 litres of diesel had been sold in a single transaction to the vehicle, an offence under Supply Controller Directives that limit daily sales to locally-registered vehicles. "An investigation paper has also been opened against the station operator. "The team seized 273 litres of diesel worth RM791.73, a pick-up truck, purchase receipts and business documents. "The total value of the seizure is estimated at RM30,791.73," he added. The case is being investigated under the Control of Supplies Act 1961.

Jogger hit by 4WD succumbs to injuries

TAWAU: A 43-year-old woman who was seriously injured after being hit by a four-wheel-drive vehicle while jogging with friends at Mile 9, Jalan Apas on August 9, has died from her injuries. After battling for her life for nine days, Darna Tajudin succumbed to her injuries, a tragic end to what began as a routine evening jog with friends. Acting Tawau District Police Chief Supt Champin Piuh said Darna, who had been receiving treatment at the Tawau Hospital, was pronounced dead by medical staff at about 8.37am on Sunday. 'At this time, police cannot determine the exact cause of death as we are awaiting the autopsy results,' he said. The case classification has been upgraded from Section 44(1)(a) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for driving under the influence causing injury, to Section 44(1)(b) for driving under the influence of alcohol above the prescribed limit resulting in death. 'If convicted, the penalty ranges from 10 to 15 years imprisonment and a fine of not less than RM50,000 and not exceeding RM100,000,' he said. The accident happened at about 9.10pm when Darna was jogging with friends from Bandar Sri Indah at Mile 10, Jalan Apas toward the T2 area at Mile 2. A 57-year-old male driver, suspected of being intoxicated, first collided with a multi-purpose vehicle driven by a 39-year-old man who was traveling from Taman Ria 11 to Tawau Airport. The collision caused the four-wheel-drive vehicle to veer out of control onto the left shoulder of the road, where it crashed into Darna and her jogging companions. 12,000 gather in two places for Zara rally

The crowd dressed in black began arriving around 6pm carrying banners and placards. Some participants also gathered at the nearby Kunak Plaza and Uptown square. The assembly, jointly organised by AS Centre and the Kunak Community Facebook group, ended at 9.30pm and featured various activities including prayers, Yassin recitations for Zara, religious chants, poetry readings and open sharing of 'our voice for Zara' messages. Chants of 'Justice for Zara' echoed throughout the packed venue, while the Justice for Zara song was played through loudspeakers. Police were present to manage traffic and monitor the peaceful proceedings. AS Centre manager cum event chairman Datuk Sri Anil Sandhu said: 'We want justice for Zara.
