An Elgin mum has spoken of her 'relief' at being able to have her beloved new baby boy at Dr Gray's Hospital instead of facing a drive to Aberdeen.
Sarah Clegg gave birth to her first child, Jack Alexander Clegg, on Wednesday morning following a planned caesarean section.
The new mum, who actually works on the Dr Gray's maternity ward herself as a healthcare support worker, is one of the growing number of parents having their children in Elgin again.
C-sections have been performed every week since they were restored in Moray in April with officials now exploring ways to expand the number of eligible women.
Today NHS Grampian revealed that 80% of posts have now been filled as part of its drive to restore a consultant-led maternity service to Dr Gray's by the end of next year.
Bosses told the Press and Journal they 'can't believe' how successful a new recruitment approach has been with nearly 600 people now applying for some jobs.
When Sarah Clegg became pregnant she was expecting to have to travel to Aberdeen to have her baby, a journey hundreds of other families have faced since the Dr Gray's unit was downgraded in 2018.
However, as her due date approached, her hopes were raised of an Elgin birth as elective caesareans were restored.
After initially being unsure if she met the strict criteria, she was given the good news and gave birth to health baby Jack, who was 7lbs and 14oz, on Wednesday morning.
She said: 'The whole experience was really good. I was really nervous but the staff held my hand and were so lovely. It was actually quite relaxing, I would definitely do it again.
'I definitely always wanted to come to Elgin. Thankfully I fit the criteria, if I hadn't then I would have had to go to Aberdeen.
'It was a big relief because there was always that thought of travelling down in labour.
'It's just been so much more practical. It has meant my mum has been here, my sister has travelled down.
'It's comfortable, the hospital isn't as busy and, because I work here too, I've felt safe.
'There's been so much extra TLC, me and Jack have felt very important.'
NHS Grampian was forced to downgrade the maternity unit in 2018 after its previous recruitment methods and staffing models made the service unsustainable.
A new campaign, entitled 'Wish You Worked Here', has been launched to boost efforts by showcasing the region and working environment.
It has since been viewed 11 million times across platforms including Sky TV, social media and news websites.
Targeted ads have also been placed in outdoor lifestyle publications with teams also appearing on industry podcasts and visiting specialist recruitment events where virtual reality devices have showcased the hospital and region.
Jane Gill, project director for The Maternity Collaborative, a joint project across NHS Grampian and NHS Highland, said: 'I can't believe it, it's been amazing.
'Every time we do it we think 'Is it going to work this time?' and it does, every single time, it just does.
'We've not had any posts unfilled so far that we've gone for. I'm not saying that's going to continue because we're at the difficult-to-recruit-for posts now but we'll rise to the challenge.
'We've now had over 1,800 people get in touch to explore working here.
'Not every inquiry is maternity-related, but everyone demonstrates that Dr Gray's is being seen as a hospital with momentum and a promising future.'
Health Secretary Neil Gray visited Dr Gray's today to see for himself the progress being made in recruitment at the hospital.
The minister is the fifth to have held the post since the downgrade.
Mr Gray said: 'It's taken time to get to this point, I recognise that. The transformation work has been remarkable though and I'm delighted with the work they're doing.'
He added: 'I've been very clear the progress needs to continue to be made, there will be no let-up in our determination with that.
'I'm heartened by what I've seen and heard about recruitment and about the fact we've had a caesarean every week since April.
'So, it is being well used, parental choice is being taken through, and that is so important because I recognise there is still anxiety and making sure we can provide parents in Moray the opportunity have choices around the services they receive.'

"Between the time the doctor phoned the ambulance, it was close to 13 hours before I got to see the sight of a hospital bed." A Scots man suffering from a stroke spent seven hours overnight in a "sweltering" ambulance waiting for a bed in hospital with no food or drink. Brian Park, from Peterhead went to his local A&E at Peterhead Community Hospital on June 10 after losing feeling in his left arm, terrible balance and his face drooping to one side. ‌ A doctor assessed the terrified 53- year -old and called an ambulance to his home address after confirming he was suffering from a stroke. ‌ After a seven hour wait when he was finally transported to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary at around 11pm, paramedics said he faced spending all night in the ambulance outside the hospital waiting for a bed. Health Secretary Neil Grey, the Scottish Ambulance Service and NHS Grampian have all apologised to Mr Park following the ordeal. Speaking to the Record, Brian said: "The paramedics told me early when we got there I could be in the ambulance all night, and it turns out I was. "I fear someone in a much worse position would likely die either waiting for paramedics to arrive or waiting inside a stuffy ambulance for six hours, which was very uncomfortable. "I was stuck in cramped conditions and was never offered anything to eat, not even a glass of water. "I was lucky but some other poor sod might not have handled all that stress waiting to get admitted." ‌ ‌ Brian had already lost his ability to speak, could't walk properly and was terrified as he lost control of his body due to the stroke but the scary episode was made so much worse by being stuck in a boiling vehicle for hours. He said: "Between the time the doctor phoned the ambulance, it was close to 13 hours before I got to see the sight of a hospital bed. "I was absolutely shattered as well as extremely anxious, which is not good for a person who has had a stroke. ‌ "After I got told I had a bed I was taken out the ambulance and taken to ward 101 around 6am." Finally Brian was admitted but faced more delays when his CT scan was cancelled due to a "miscommunication." He explained: "I had my vitals taken and told to wait for my CT Scan. ‌ "At 11am I was woken up to be told my CT Scan was cancelled because then finally at 4pm after another six hour wait I got my scan. "They already knew in Aberdeen about my condition yet I had to languish inside a very hot ambulance all night then wait the best part of Tuesday to be treated. "I dread to think what would have happened if my stroke was slightly worse, chances are I wouldn't be here now." ‌ A spokesperson for the Scottish Ambulance Service said: "We would like to sincerely apologise to Mr Park for the delay in the ambulance response. Our service was under significant pressure on 10 June with hospital handover delays at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary averaging six hours. "These delays prevent our ambulance crews from getting back out on the road to treat other patients, such as Mr Park. When a time is appropriate, we would ask Mr Park's family to contact our Patient Experience Team directly so we can look into this case further and personally discuss their concerns.' ‌ A spokesperson for NHS Grampian said: 'As is the case elsewhere in the UK, Ambulances are, at times, having to wait outside our Emergency Departments for longer than we would like. This is regrettable and we apologise to anyone who has been impacted by this. 'On Monday we saw close to 40% more people than on an average day at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary's Emergency department – with 185 patient attendances, 150 of which were classed as majors. 'Our hospitals are regularly facing sustained pressure due to the volume of acutely ill patients arriving, delayed discharges, capacity in community healthcare settings and staffing pressures. This sometimes means we are unable to admit more patients to the department. ‌ 'Increased demand on hospital space and capacity is a key issue in Grampian. Nappies cut ruled out as London-based experts drafted in to help NHS Grampian save millions

Health bosses have voted against plans to slash spending on newborn tots amid fears scrapping hospital nappies 'would do more harm than good'. A shock dossier earlier this week revealed a range of services across the north-east could be axed or reduced to save the health board £23 million. This included halting cancer treatment and elective surgeries on public holidays and even stopping giving out disposable nappies for most newborn babies. The proposed cost-cutting measures would have impacted expectant mums at maternity wards in Aberdeen, Inverurie, Peterhead and Elgin. It comes as NHS Grampian bosses scramble to recoup millions of pounds after officially becoming the most broke health board in Scotland. They currently have a staggering £68m overspend that they aim to reduce to £45m in the next 12 months. And now, external experts have been drafted in to help them balance the books. Government officials haven hired London-based advisors KPMG to crunch the numbers and help NHS Grampian come up with an expansive savings plan. They say the cash crisis within the health board has escalated to the point where there is a need for experts to intervene amid concerns over failing to improve services. Adam Coldwells reassured board members that NHS Grampian will still be 'absolutely in charge' of the recovery plan and the changes they implement further down the line. However, the external body will be there to monitor their progress, give advice on possible additional savings the board might have missed and 'hold them to account'. The interim chief executive said this is a necessary measure to turn the health board's fortunes around as 'the scale of the [financial] challenge is significant'. And he stressed this would be a good opportunity to learn and improve. He added: 'Clearly it's an extremely serious issue and relates primarily to our financial position, which as a board we've been working on for the last two years. 'We've certainly struggled to find the scale of savings that we need to. 'I'm optimistic this external support from an organisation, who has done this lots of times, will be able to find things that we've simply not been able to identify ourselves.' Members of the NHS Grampian board were later presented with a detailed report outlining 79 cost-cutting measures which will be implemented within the next year. Health bosses admit about a dozen of those could have direct impact on vulnerable patients – with a range of medical services no longer taking place on public holidays. This would affect non-emergency surgeries and diagnostic tests, as well as cancer treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Routine test results will also be given by phone or letter, with face-to-face appointments taking place only when essential. The aim is to cut down on overtime pay. Board member Derick Murray questioned whether they are not 'taking a step back' by reducing these services. But interim director of people and culture, Philip Shipman, said running services on public holidays is 'incredibly expensive' so that's a good place to make a saving. Dr Colette Backwell later also reminded fellow board members that the recovery plan they have been presented with is a necessity rather than a choice. 'The Scottish Government is asking us to find more savings so we have to go along with that,' she said. Staff at pharmacies will also be taking a day off on public holidays from now on. Members raised concerns this could result in people not getting the treatment they need in a timely manner or being missed altogether. Area clinical forum chairman Mark Burrell admitted other health committees have had similar worries too. However, he reassured that there is a 'robust evaluation' under way so that 'patients do not suffer' at the hands of the proposed changes. 'This is kept under very close review,' Mr Burrell added. One of the proposed measures was, however, scratched from the plans amid fears it 'would not be supportive of vulnerable parents'. Board chairwoman Alison Evison raised concerns that if they stop giving out nappies at hospitals, parents might end up without any supplies at an already stressful time. This option would have essentially saved them around £8,000 per year. But Mrs Evison didn't think 'such a small' amount would justify the impact of going ahead with the proposals. She said: 'This saving has huge implications for certain people who are in need of that kind of support when they're coming to hospital. 'And yet, the saving associated with it is actually relatively small. 'Sometimes people will be coming to a hospital to have a baby when they are not expecting it at that point in time. It's a case of just not being prepared. 'So I think we are actually trying to make a saving which is going to be more negative than supportive.' All of the other proposals were given the green light, however, with a more detailed report being presented to the board in October.
