Thoothukudi's district BJP president alleges irregularities in Corporation's tender process

The Hindu23-04-2025

BJP's Thoothukudi South District president R. Sindhrangathan has submitted a petition to the District Collector against the Corporation's Mayor and Commissioner over tender irregularities.
According to the petition, under the 'Namakku Naame' scheme 2024-2025 introduced by the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, several works are being undertaken by the Thoothukudi Corporation. A tender notification for these works was issued on April 4, 2025 by the Thoothukudi Corporation Commissioner.
The notification stated that the bid for invitation could be submitted until April 25,2025.
The petition claimed that one of the tenders called for construction of a new road with pedestrian pathway behind the Corporation office at a cost of ₹30 lakh. However, even before selecting the contractor for this work, the road construction had already begun and it was nearing completion.
Similarly, a tender called for fencing and electrification work at 'Aayiram Pirai' park at a cost of ₹15.60 lakh. But it was noted that the fencing and electrification works were already completed a few months ago. Another bid was called for the construction of compound walls at sports ground in P&T Colony at a cost of ₹31.50 lakh. Mr Sindhrangathan questioned the need for a new wall, when already one existed and raised concerns about the inauguration of it by Lok Sabha MP Kanimozhi Karunaidhi, two months ago.
He urged the Collector to conduct an inquiry on this matter and take appropriate action against the Mayor and Corporation Commissioner.
Responding to allegations, Mayor Jegan Periyasamy denied the claims. He clarified that the tender behind the Corporation office was specifically for the construction of an approaching road using BT, while initial levelling and ground works were done using the Corporation's own earth movers. Similarly for the park, the tender was issued for different sections of fencing and additional electrification works, not for previously completed tasks.
With regards to the sports ground, he noted that the tender included the additional arrangements and enhancement to the existing compound wall to improve safety and usability, he added.

Industries minister Harshwardhan Chauhan says Centre not distributing charity to Himachal

Shimla: Himachal Pradesh industries minister Harshwardhan Chauhan on Monday said that the central govt is not distributing charity to Himachal Pradesh, but the state is only getting its share, like all other 29 states of the country. Responding to the statements made by BJP MPs Anurag Thakur, Suresh Kashyap, and others that the central govt is providing sufficient funds to Himachal, the industries minister clarified that if Himachal is getting funds under the Pradhan Mantri Gramin Sadak Yojana, Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, or MGNREGA, it is the right of the state. "It is not the case that Himachal started getting these funds only when the BJP came to power in the Centre. Himachal used to get the same funds even when the previous govt was at the Centre as per the set pattern," he added. The minister, however, accused the central govt of not releasing funds to the state govt, especially around Rs 10,000 crore under the post-disaster needs assessment (PDNA), though the state govt sent the claims to the Centre in the financial year 2023-24. He claimed that the central govt is indirectly benefiting other states ruled by the BJP or its allies. Chauhan questioned the BJP leadership in Himachal about whether they got any funds or schemes sanctioned for the hill state other than what the state is getting under the existing schemes. The cabinet minister also held former chief minister and current leader of opposition Jai Ram Thakur, as well as the previous BJP govt, responsible for putting Himachal into a financial mess and a vicious cycle of loans. RLD seeks Bharat Ratna for 1857 hero Mangal Pandey

Lucknow: BJP ally Rashtriya Lok Dal on Monday demanded that Mangal Pandey — the iconic figure of India's first War of Independence in 1857 — be conferred the Bharat Ratna. RLD national secretary Anupam Mishra made the demand while speaking to reporters in Ballia on Monday. He expressed disappointment that Pandey's role in India's freedom struggle has not received the recognition it rightfully deserves. "It is unfortunate that the contribution of such a great revolutionary remains unrecognised. It would be an honour for the award itself to be associated with a patriot of his stature," Mishra stated. Mishra, who arrived in Ballia on Sunday as part of the Amar Shaheed Samman Yatra, visited Pandey's ancestral village of Nagwa to pay homage. He also proposed the construction of a tall statue of Mangal Pandey in Ballia, asserting that his legacy warrants a monumental tribute. "Pandey's courage and sacrifice surpass many other icons of the freedom movement. Installing a grand statue here in his birthplace would be a fitting tribute and a source of inspiration for generations to come," he said. TNN
